Google Betas New Browser Toolbar

By Nate Mook | Published January 30, 2006, 3:03 PM

Google on Monday released a beta version of its new toolbar for Internet Explorer, complete with an enterprise edition that simplifies network installation and searching a corporate network. Google Toolbar 4 adds the ability for users to create Custom Buttons for Web sites they visit often.

Through the Custom Buttons feature, a user can search any site they please, along with integrating an RSS feed as headlines in a dropdown menu. According to Google Toolbar developer Othman Laraki, it only takes a few seconds to make a new button. "And don't miss some of the other cool features for everyone: a greatly-improved search box for formulating better queries; a streamlined bookmarking interface; and Send-To, for posting or sending content via Gmail, Blogger or SMS," Laraki added.

One annoying feature is that you need to leave a Change Settings button on your toolbar, which takes up a bit more precious space, instead of clicking on Google > Settings as you did previously.

But on the whole it's an improvement. I use Google Toolbar a LOT. And like earlier Google toolbars, it does NOT spy on you unless you decide to let it do so.

Never having used it before I just installed the Google Toolbar for Firefox on the strength of this story. The existing Google Toolbar for Firefox is okay but pretty pointless in my opinion. A toolbar for IE seems like a good idea on the otherhand. I'll be uninstalling the Ff as I'm never going to use the Google Toolbar myself. But hats off for kicking M$ up the arse.

So Google now will be collecting data from company networks and the data they those employees search. HMMM? I wonder how many govt computers have the Google Desktop Search installed and what data is being sent back for their prying eyes?

Google is Big Brother - and people can't see it.

True, they don't have the new features in it yet, but they'll be there soon enough.

Depends on how you define spyware.

Most spyware is catsgorized as software that *without your knowledge* collects user data and then uploads it to a cetral server.

Some define it as *any* software that gathers user data and reports it.

If you spy on someone...and they knowingly agreed to it...is it still spying?
