Google Launches Free 3D Map Software

By Nate Mook | Published June 28, 2005, 11:57 AM

Google EarthJust like it did following its purchase of Picasa, Google has released a free version of the satellite imagery-based mapping software it acquired from Keyhole last October. Google Earth functions much like the company's online Maps service, enabling users to zoom in on an address or get driving directions overlayed on a 3D map.

"Google Earth utilizes broadband streaming technology and 3D graphics, much like a videogame, enabling users to interactively explore the world-- either their own neighborhood or the far corners of the globe," said Keyhole general manager John Hanke. Unlike Google Maps, Google Earth also lets users rotate their view to see terrain and buildings, and add annotations to maps. Google Earth can be downloaded for Windows; a Mac version is currently in development.

I just installed it under c:\programs\ and now it will not login and I unable to uninstall. The uninstall program is searching for the program under c:\c:\program files\. It may work just don't change the installation path. I'll pass. Sorry for the dupe.

This is originally Microsoft's idea. I'll still wait for MS's version to come out and see.

Me too. MSFT service looks alot more interesting. MSFT looks like they are going above and beyond for a change.

Well NASA beat both MS and Google(Keyhole) to it with World Wind. Not sure how you can say originally MS idea when WW has been around for some time.

The idea may have not originally been Google's, although I am a user of Keyhole, which is the former name of Google Earth. Keyhole has been in use by CNN and other news networks for world projections for a while and is unique in how it gathers increased information.

I don't think that an MS / NASA comparison really works well. They are all very different if not complimentary.
