Google Opens Calendar Beta

By Nate Mook | Published April 13, 2006, 12:36 AM

Google late Wednesday opened up its much-anticipated Calendar service to the public in beta form, complete with Gmail integration and SMS notifications. Code-named CL2, the free service enables users to quickly add events and reminders, send invitations and share their calendar with others.

Google Calendar can import events directly from Microsoft Outlook and Yahoo! Calendar, in addition to supporting calendar standards to view schedules on any device supporting iCal or XML files. Gmail will also recognize events mentioned in an e-mail to quickly add them to Google Calendar.

Sharing also plays a central role in the new service. Users can search their own agenda and even public calendars to find new events. Invitations can be sent to those even without a Google account, enabling them to post responses directly into the calendar.

For protection of sensitive data, limits can be placed on what events are shared, and organizations can even open their events to the world by integrating a Google Calendar button on their Web sites. The search giant also discusses potential privacy concerns, noting that it won't share personal information with anyone.

"Google's computers process the information in your calendars to offer you the best possible service, including formatting and displaying the information to you and backing up your calendars' contents. Google employees will not read your private calendar information," the company says.

Google Calendar works in IE 6 and Firefox on Windows, Mac and Linux. Safari support is still in the works, according to the company.

I thought google's calendar would be a waste of time, like most computer calendar applications (online or otherwise).
But it's not... it's really quite awesome. I should have expected as much, since it IS google we're talking about. Everything they touch is golden.... except google base... what the hell was that?

these guys have patented the art of writing applications which are silky smooth and so natural to use. I never used calendar before either on Hotmail or Yahoo...but seeing the calendar on google, I went back to both Hotmail and Yahoo, and the feeling's like you are doing weightlifting...let me give you an example...in both H & Y, if you have to put up something in the calendar, you go to a separate page and fill in all the boxes...nothing wrong per se...as a developer that is how you have been taught in the class as well...but it isn't natural...

in Cal2, you see the calendar all the time, and you click on a place, you enter the details on a small popup, you can even enter the time in kind of a fuzzy way and it recognizes and adds the event...

You have to love all the work google does, their calender app is now my favorite. Along with gmail. Why people are so concerned with them knowing your personal info ill never know. If you were trusting them with your bank accounts I can see or maybe your ssn. But we are talking about your calender, I mean if you have to pick your kid up from a basball game or schedule your next meeting, why is that a privacy issue and why would you be worried about it.

I find this to be nothing like yahoo's calender, other then the fact its a calender. it's easier to use it has a cleaner interface. All this and it's still in beta. The performance and quickness, not to mention one click add for appointments is great. They have tried ot make it as easy to use as possible you certainly don't get that out of yahoo's, also do you see any ads or banners flashing in your face? Nope, same thing with their email. There is nothing not to love, and the best part is they are adding stuff all the time! Yahoo may have been first, but google is doing it right.

i have a question about duplicate events... i would like to be able to click and drag one event to another day and have google calendar give me the option of moving it or simply copying the event to another day. because if you select the event and drag it to another day, google calendar will only MOVE the event and wont ASK to either COPY or MOVE it.

also, when you edit the event under 'more actions/duplicate event' there is no way to select every monday, or every tuesday, etc... anyone know any ways around these quirks in repeating events?

Seriously what do you think your goin achieve by saying that the big G is goin be spyin on us all 24/7. Du think that anyone that has already made their minds up about google (95% of people) are goin be converted to your (way out of proportion) way of thinking.

I can see it now, A bunch of trained monkeys ( lets call em all rijp) sitting in a room combing over millions of events to see if there's anything tasty there they can pass on up to the big G. Come on. They use some smart algorithm to serve us up ads, thats there business. The end.

And no I don't have a problem with you expressing your opinion but u seem to have a problem with me expressin mine.

And i'm sure google were influenced by Yahoo calendar but then i'm sure that yahoo weren't the first EVER company to come up with the idea of an online calendar formatted as it is. Also maybe the way yahoo have done the calendar is good and people have got used to it. Whats wrong with google using a format that is popular and familiar.

but you can go ahead and use your devil in a blue dress company all you want. When you experience identify theft, you can complain to theft.google.com when the gmail is down, and you are sending email to a spammer.
