Google to IE Users: Try Firefox

By Nate Mook | Published April 26, 2006, 2:45 PM

Google on Wednesday rolled out the first third-party advertisement on its traditionally spartan homepage -- a link to download Firefox with the Google Toolbar. The promotion appears underneath Google's search box and is currently visible only to Internet Explorer users.

The search engine's ties to Firefox are nothing new; the company has hired a number of the browser's developers and has begun paying affiliates $1 for each user they get to install Firefox with Google Toolbar. The Mozilla corporation behind Firefox also makes most of its revenues from a search partnership with Google.

I'm just saying; dump Firefox and IE.. Get Opera 9... Opera is far better than IE, and developers says that it's easier to code correctly to Opera compared to IE.. Only problem is that most websites uses this old and crappy HTML that only IE allowes.

I am getting sick of these ads google is putting in areas of their search that never had them before...

First it was the ad to try Google Desktop Search, now its this. Time to make another addition to my Ad Muncher filter target list.

I got a couple of these invitations by Google to drop IE and to go for FF instead.

I didn't drop IE, but Google instead because I have no need for an intriguer on my PC.

IE7 together with MSN search are doing a perfect job for me.

One good reason why I don't use IE...Adblock. I am so spoiled by not seeing ads anymore that I don't want to go back. IE has not opened up their code enough to allow for the third party addons that Firefox has. I am sure that there are reasons for this, but I can't think of any good ones.

Same here... I love adblock. I don't dislike Internet Explorer, I just love the simplicity of a freshly installed instance of Firefox. Granted, in bare-bones form it doesn't offer as much as IE, but that's fine. Firefox lets me choose what functionality I want to install, and do so through the use of extensions. Now, with the IETab extension, I rarely need to open IE at all.

If you want no ads in IE check out Ad Muncher, it solves the problem in all browsers without any problems at all. I rarely ever see any ads.

Not a free solution, but by far the best in my opinion.

Why would anyone pay for something when it's free and you can get thousands of other extensions for free too? That is like burning money to stay warm when you live next door to a store that gives firewood away for free.

Well like he said, if you use IE... or any non-firefox browser then AdMunch holds a distinct advantage over AdBlock - it's not browser dependant.

And Adblock, though very nice, just isn't in the same league as AdMunch. Just download the trial and go through AdMunch's options. But to each their own.

Damn it!!! What the hell is happening to the world of web browsers. Just as an example of email sites:
-Windows Live Mail is not compatible with FF & Opera
-Gmail still doesnt render properly with Opera
-Yahoo Mail Beta doesnt work with Opera and also IE7!!! (It says it supports IE5.5 & higher but it doesnt work with IE7. Liar!!!)

I use all three email services. Does that mean I should have all three browsers in order to get full compatibility???

I thought this browser wars would make the web more standards based. But I see the exact opposite.

Earlier when I used to surf I used to have 3 - 4 browser windows open. Now, even after the advent of tabbed browsing, I still need to have 3 - 4 browser windows open - of different browsers!!!

Score: 0

|

You know I see where your going, but thank MS for this. IE is the most out of standard browser there is, when you see a site not rendering properly in firefox or opera that is why, IE corrects for sloppy programming and well then you have your rendering problems. IF we see firefox's share increase to 30-50 percent you will see all the issues you describe go away, but that is what you get when you have one crappy browser controlling 90 percent of the market.

The common user just doesn't care about all that all they want is something that works, and when you have a company as lazy as microsoft having control, well it most likely won't end any time soon but until then firefox and opera need to keep fighting. A good example of progress if the following; yahoo released a picture upload tool for firefox that was only available in IE previously. Google toolbar that is on par with the IE version. Majority of all pages that did have issues with ff in the past have now been fixed. I run it as my primary browser and have IE tab extention for any other problems.

I believe gamil and Yahoo work correctly in the latest Opera 9 Beta.

Score: 0

Yahoo Mail probably does work with IE6, but IE7 breaks stuff that worked fine in IE6, so I hear. Mostly because of all the hacks that had to be used to make it work in IE6 in the first place.

Score: 0

I was referring to Yahoo Mail Beta, which requires IE or FF. It reverts to the default Yahoo Mail if I use either Opera or IE7Beta.

Gmail too has certain rendering issues with Opera. Quick Contacts (GTalk) is not available and also the Reply and Forward actions do not function properly until the contents of the entire mail message has been downloaded.

but only if IE6 didnt had soooo many problems, more time would go to tune up other browsers... IE6 still is about 70% of the browsers...

I am a Firefox lover but most people don't understand that just by having alternative browsers like mozilla, firefox, opera, netscape, internet explorer you are creating a safer internet for all users. If IE has 100% of the users then its not hard to tell hackers what browser to look for bugs and security flaws in, therefore making it very unsecure. but if its split between many browsers they have to spend all this time looking for flaws in sperate browsers making everyone safer.

haha, your funny. I would run those utilities anyway just to be safe. The only reason I use IE is for places that truly just do not play nice with ff which is very rare. Stuff that requires active x namely which his why MS needs that browser so damn bad still. I am sure they sell programming kits for active x apps, which is also the main reason ie is so insecure as is. But things are switching now to more standards based, you will begin to see active x going away and soon there will be no reason to have ie at all. Not that it will matter much, MS will still cram it down your throat and tell you that you need it. The only reason MS wasn't told to remove it from the OS is because they lied to the courts and said it will destroy the os, make it not function properly or something along those lines, must be nice to be billionaires and use it to your advantage to make more billions and buy the courts which I have no dobt they did, how else can you explain no punishment in the least?

As far as security goes... What, exactly were you expecting? It's software. It's written by humans. What matters most are the policies. A program cannot installin Firefox without explicit permission. Even then, granting that most users would allow just about anything nowadays, Firefox is not integrated into the OS.
