HDTV, PS3 top list of most wanted holiday gifts

Results of a web poll by the Computing Technology Industry Association indicate that gaming consoles are a much sought-after high-tech gift this year.
While a high-definition television led all gadgets with 15.2 percent, Sony's PlayStation 3 had a strong second place showing with 13.7 percent of all respondents. It is not exactly clear if these respondents wanted Sony's console all along, but it is a bright sign for the company.
In 2006, the PS3 also topped the group's poll, followed by HDTVs and the Xbox 360 console.
The PS3 is far behind its competitors as far as actual sales globally. As of last count, nearly 15 million Wiis and 13.7 million Xbox 360s have been sold worldwide, compared with only about 6.4 million PS3's.
Nintendo's Wii does not come far behind in the survey, garnering 10.8 percent of respondents, and the Xbox 360 10.2 percent. Rounding out the top five was the PC, which was chosen by 9.8 percent.
"Digital entertainment systems for the home have never been in greater demand, and the options available to consumers have never been in greater supply," CompTIA president and CEO John Venator said in a statement.
There is further good news for Sony down further in the poll: its Blu-ray DVD players came in eighth with 3.5 percent, beating out HD DVD, which was chosen by 2.9 percent.
CompTIA's poll was conducted between November 1 and 29, and had 1,012 responses.
Xbox + missing bits = Xbox elite, just shows where the box was meant to be if it wasn't rushed release. Like many others who probably don't care about numbers s***ed, reference quality, hard core gaming the PS3 is an excellent choice for the front room, its simply a jack of all trades. my opinion is that its all about convenience and convergence. Yes Ethernet is faster but it's hardly necessary nowadays, again hdmi is not necessary but its convenient to have one standard for all connections. The 360 is evolving into a multi media system akin PS3? that's taken a year or so. So will the people that bought the early 360's be upgrading to the elite ? than when the 360 is released with HDDVD built in will they also buy that? PS3 is a long term strategy from Sony (like PS2)and again re-iterating that quality costs, and takes time, games of quality are coming, but if they rush release products customers complains, if they take too long customers complains !! There will never be enough games for the hardcore gamers on any console, we still play resistance, motorstorm and now recently COD4 to me these are quality items, but inherently most games are the same (excluding Wii stuff) just with better eye candy and slightly different game mechanics) each time around, Halo = Halo 2 (better Graphics) = Resistance (worse graphics) = Halo 3 (even better graphics)....

|it's funny how all these 'not needed' missing bits are slowly being added on to the box, at cost. Never said anything about reference quality output, don't even know what you mean, but my ps3 hooked to a Kdl-40x3500 is the best output I've personally seen, I'm happy.I see this item as a multi media hub and not just a games console, and put it simply it connects to the internet, plays games, music, films... without any extra bits & bobs or wires being added and costing more.

Microsof vs Sony, Microsoft - Xbox 360 and HD DVD (Damn usb conection) - 299€ + 199€ = 498€ ~ 500€, hum many problems with the Leds in the console, some erros and stuff (The Stores have to shutdown when appear errors, Windows Rullez), Resume "like the other say" - Xbox just sold in that time, cause peopel don't have other thing to buy that time; Sony - PS3 + Blu-Ray = 399 € (Hum 500€ - 400€ = 100€, hum with 100€ i think i can buy Microsoft Live Subscription just to play online, oh! i can play PS3 online without paying, hum nice) ok its all

|Sony is very successful company and over the years its made some excellent stuff, yes its made some dud stuff too but which company has'nt ? Xbox360 was a rush release. No wifi, no hdmi no HD disc for films. PS3 is a well designed thought out multi media hub. It is a well built, quality product, the Xbox360 has sold more at the MOMENT, but when it started there was nothing else out there ? people where desperate to 'see' Next gen gaming, common sense? I don't understand why all this anti-Sony feeling, there products may be priced higher than the other brands but Quality costs.

|You do not need wifi, and it does have HDMI. For one thing HDMI is not needed plain and simple. Mutli media hub the 360 and PC can do that too. Quality remains to be seen. The quality of the output could be better, the PS3 is far from reference quality.

|"Xbox360 was a rush release."
The PS3 was going to be released when the 360 was, but they delayed it a year.
"No wifi,"
Wifi isn't needed. Standerd eithernet is faster anyway. Though if you really need Wifi you can get it as an option.
"no hdmi"
The new 360's do have HDMI, though you don't really need that either.
"no HD disc for films."
That's not required for a 'gaming' machine. Though it's also optional if you really want HD-DVD. Or you also have the option to download HD movies or shows without any additional hardware.
"I don't understand why all this anti-Sony feeling, there products may be priced higher than the other brands but Quality costs."
But no one cares if there's no game to play on it. The PS3 could be the same as a $35k computer sold for $399, but who cares if you can already get basically the same games (and more) on the cheaper 360?

Wii is selling exceptionally well and is kicking the crap out of 360 & PS3. The 360 and PS3 are pretty much neck and neck.
Wii - 15.0 million in 1 year (15 mill per year)
360 - 13.7 million in 2 years (6.85 mill per year)
PS3 - 6.4 million in 1 year (6.4 mill per year)
The numbers speak for themselves.

|Nice try, but you can't just divide 13.7 million by two because the 360 has been out for 2 years. At the 1 year mark the 360 was over 9 million units sold. Then in the second year sales have slowed, as they tend to do, and also because two NEW consoles were introduced (Wii and PS3). Your measly PS3 numbers don't look so peachy now. The 360 sold a good 2.6 million units more in its first year than the PS3 did, and you can bet your a** that sales of PS3 next year will slow down too and Sony will be left in the dust.
Yup, the numbers speak for themselves.

OK new numbers (your numbers):
Wii Year 1: 15 kabillion (still kicking the crap out of everyone)
360 Year 1: 9 mill (no competition nice #'s)
360 Year 2: 4.7 mill (with competition, price cut, and Halo 3)
PS3 Year 1: 6.4 (with competition, high price, and very few games)
Look, I’m not trying to sugar coat the less then stellar first year but people seem to forget that the 360 is on its second year.
