HP to Recall 679,000 Digital Cameras

By Ed Oswald | Published June 6, 2006, 5:00 PM

HP will recall about 679,000 digital cameras worldwide to fix an issue that causes the battery pack to overheat when connected to a docking station or AC adapter, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday. One report has been received of an HP camera catching fire, however no injuries have occurred.

The cameras were sold between August 2004 and April 2006 for between $250 and $400 USD. In the U.S., the recall involves about 224,000 cameras. The agency recommended that owners of affected cameras stop using the devices and apply a firmware update that would provide a temporary fix. In the place of the rechargeable battery, regular batteries should be used until the issue is remedied.

HP cams are nice but there are plenty of more professional choices. Their printers are really nice though.

I would never buy an HP camera, there are other companies I'm into for that. The only things I like from HP are their printers. I've never been into their computer systems either.

I personally wouldnt ever buy a HP camera, and would only ever concider there laser printers, servers and maybe there notebooks as a potential purchase. So to me this is just a reinforcement of the opinion I have.

Indeed - there inkjets leave a lot to be desired from a software point of view. Who ever wanted a 700MB printer driver? :P

Interesting BetaNews didn't specify the affected models...

My experiences exactly. The Photosmart R707 was my first digital camera and after testing a few (figuring out which one to buy), this one rocks.

I realize that. While I personally was not affected (since I do not use non-rechargeable batteries), the fix went in like a charm.

I don't think it's just HP, all the major manufacturer's have had electrical/battery troubles.

Seems that HP needs a new supplier of battery's
they recalled the battery's of their notebooks earlier this year.

Wow.

*That* is gonna hurt the bottom line.

eh power supply and batt issues seem to be the largest reason for recall out there, nobody seems to get it completely right. xbox, dell latitudes, a few different cell phones, and now this, not really suprised at another problem like this.
