Hackers Open Up Mac OS X Leopard for PC
By the Betanews Staff | Published October 30, 2007, 3:56 PM
Apple has a new set of hackers to contend with: a group of developers on the OSx86Scene forum have published instructions on how to install Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on a standard PC. The move will no doubt bring Apple's legal team a knocking very soon, but for the time being, the instructions are still available on the organization's website. Not all features are available to those who install the OS, however it is apparently stable.
Apple is not only fighting hackers who wish to bring the company's OS to the PC, but also those who are trying to break into the iPhone and iPod Touch. An application called Jailbreak has been released, and Apple in updates have specifically tried to fight back through "bricking" hacked devices.
Apple should stop making the hardware and just concentrate on releasing the operating system. Apple would make an absolute killing if they allowed the os to be installed on PCs. I would install it and I'm sure that many many others would. But we're just not prepared to go out and buy the equipment to run the os when we already have a PC. Dumb Apple. [tsk]

|That's what I was thinking =). The documentation given by these guys is a reflection of their own experience. They skip a few steps here and there and honestly - it was difficult enough for me to install OSX 10.4.8 the first time -- a few computers weren't compatible and finally my DELL Laptop installed it so easily. The JaS MaCOSX v10.4.8 with DiskUtil / BikeDude's UltraATA support, etc. is a wonderful distro. I've tried upgrades and had to end up reinstalling.

|I agree with drumcat Apple needs to give it up and stop trying to make people buy their hardware to get their os. There are people that will still buy Apple hardware but with Microsoft Vista the way it is, I can see a giant sucking sound of money being taken away from Microsoft and going in to Apples pockets. Bill Gates became a billionare by selling a OS not hardware. If Apple would release a version of OS X that can be installed on a pc. If Steve Jobs was smart he would see this as a opertunity to gain market share. The worse thing that Steve Jobs did when he took Apple back was to stop the Apple clones. I personaly owned 2 clones.

|definitely untrue. one of the nice things about apple is they can push tech forward by dropping dead tech like floppies and crts and then introduce high end tech like scsi, firewire, magneto optical drives, etc, without worrying about clones dragging their feet

i am not trying to turn this in to a mac pc war both have there good and bad points, but apple could help there selfs much more if they would stop the strangle hold on os x. right now with windows vista doing so bad apple could walk in and increse their sales by 20% easy.

|Proprietary hardware?Hmmmm I wonder how many home PC users out there that are daunted by the market just buy from Dell, or HP? Aren't those mostly proprietary unless you know what you are getting (tower vs. desktop).
And Vista? I use XP now, but from what I hear... Vista is so bad that most tech experts are telling everyone to stay away (ie. Windows ME). And aren't XP users expected to get many of the security enhancements via the SP3 coming soon?
The only thing PC users like to complain about, and is a viable argument against Apple, is the lack of games. But if you aren't a hardcore gamer, then Apple machines will give you all the services (even business software) a comparable PC will give you.
Apple just does things with a touch more "style" than Microsoft does.

|I am an MS fanboy and proud. I have vista, zune, and xbox360. Vista is a hell of a lot better than people think it is. I have not had issues with stability. I had some compatability issues when I first got it, but almost everything I use works with vista now. The performance and compatability patches have been definately improving the OS. Although I wouldn't have encouraged computer illiterate people to upgrade to vista when it came out (i did anyway), I would recommend it now although compatability isn't all the way there yet, but come SP1 I would recommend it for everyone. It will be a highly reliable system.
The same can be said for any new version of apple anything, they are buggy when they are released, and they get better over time with patches.
I may be a fanboy, but i am realistic, and i give credit where it is due. And OS X has definately become a very good OS over the last 6 years of updating and feature adding.

|Well Vista is a Piece, i have played with it since it was in beta i like the ideas behind it but M$ is trying to force it on everyone. As for the People that said XP was crap from the start were right it did suck but after 2 years or so it became a viable OS. Vista has to change some fundamental problems and People need to Upgrade their Relics for PCs but that all takes time ill wait 2 or 3 more years before ill use it Full time.
But Vista as of Right Now meaning 2007 is not worth looking at for the average user.

|another problem is if apple starts selling it off the shelf for pc's then they face the very large problem of supporting all the different hardware available which will make osx atlot less stable because of crappy hardware then the world will fill up with people that complain about what a pile o crap it is just like they do to vista.

|that doesn't make since at all??? it's really simple if you build a pc out of lowend crappy parts it is most like to lock up, crash alot more if you build a pc out of good parts it is not going to crash very often... just like vista runs great on a good pc runs bad on a crappy pc's very simple concept. if apple opens the door to the pc world then they will have to face all the people with crappy budget pc's &itching all the time about how bad osx is (just like they do to vista) when the whole problem is flaky hardware.
Score: 0
|My point is, Windows is able to handling all these hardwares without any problem. The only time there is a problem is the driver is bad. After all, Apple and it's fans claim OSX is a much superior OS than Windows. Your statement just say Windows as a inferior OS to OSX can do much better.

|I am finding this to be less and less an issue. Either it will work with Wine/Crossover Office, or for those few things that actually require XP, I can fire one up in a Virtual Machine. And yes, usb ports can be setup to pass through to the VM, so the digital camera will appear to be hooked up directly to the XP Virtual Machine as far as your program is concerned.
I'd much rather only use Windows when I have to rather than full time, and don't mind booting up a VM from time to time. It's amazing how little that happens for me now though.
