Halo 3 Beta Set to Start May 16

By Ed Oswald | Published April 10, 2007, 10:44 AM

The highly-anticipated Halo 3 multiplayer beta will be made available across Xbox Live starting May 16, the company said on Tuesday.

Beginning 5:00am PT on May 16 and running through June 6 at 11:59pm PT, the download will be offered through the Xbox Live Marketplace. Access to the beta will only be provided to those who registered either through the "Rule of Three" promotion or by purchasing specially marked copies of the game Crackdown.

Three maps will be made available within the beta: "Snowbound," "High Ground" and "Valhalla." Gamers would also be able to play with the new weapons, vehicles and game types that are to become part of the larger Halo 3 release due this fall.

"Bringing an early look at the multiplayer elements of 'Halo 3' to our passionate fan base is tremendously exciting for us" Microsoft Game Studios vice president Shane Kim said, noting Halo 2 still remains the #1 played game over Xbox Live.

New registrants for the beta are still being taken, although those interested would need to purchase Crackdown, Microsoft said. The game would act as a 'key' to access the Halo 3 beta download.

Microsoft also will provide sneak previews of the game from the Bungie Web site and through high-definition content in the Xbox Live Marketplace.

No one is forcing anyone to buy anything, and as terminalx pointed out Sony did the same thing. Funny how when Sony does it their fanboys are happy. Oh and Program86 and Joey Deacon are in love with each other. They like to cuddle together in their Sony underoos.

Wow, look at this ALL sony Fanboys, not everyone thinks Crackdown is a crappy game its subjective, yes it sucks that you have to buy a game to try the demo but they aren't forcing you to try the beta. Sony did the same thing with FF12 for the demo, you had to buy dragon quest 8 and a lot of people did not like it but they still bought it. nothing new here EVERYONE does it.

Yes, a playable demo of FF12 was on the Dragon Quest 8 CD for the PS2, but there was also a shed load of other ways of getting it. I have several magazine cover disks with it on..

Still nice try...

Initially it was on Dragon Quest EXCLUSIVELY of course this changed later but INITIALLY it was since this is just a BETA I am sure demo disks will be released later, either way WII and XBOX360 is taking the lead and manufacturers are debating their exclusivity for ps3, the ps3 has a chance to be great but again I think the technology is too new and they are not able to utilitize it properly, 3DO did the same thing and you can see where it is now, granted sony is a lot bigger but if everyone runs from them and makes games for the competition then it may be game over...theres talks square soft and ea are thinking of leaving but its only rumors so we will have to see.

Crappy is all a matter of opinion. I know a lot of people that bought it just for Halo 3 beta and ended up loving the game too.

And they do not MAKE you buy anthing. There were 2 other possible ways to get in to the beta.

And this whole process makes perfect sense. They do not want an open beta - this keeps it limited and at the same times helps sales of a title.

Your post on the other hand clearly says that products like Vista died a horrible death, making you either really stupid or a LIAR.

PSP doesn't compete against the 360, it competes against the DS which is annihilating it in sales. PS3 is not outselling the 360, you are full of sh**. UMD was a total market failure, why do you think the movie studios pulled out of the format and no longer release movies on it? ATRAC failed in the portable audio market. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD together have a very tiny market share, neither is obliterating the other. HD-DVD currently holds the lead in Europe. Must be nice living in your fanboy dreamland. Faster at release doen't mean jack, what counts is total sales and right now the PS3 isn't doing well at all. The 360 is currently outselling it in the US and the Wii is destroying it worldwide.

"Unfortunately for Sony and the PS3...no one compares What is to what was. The Xbox 360 is currently outselling the PS3 by a huge margin (about 125,000 last month).

It doesn't make sense to compare the PS3 sales of today to the Xbox 360 sales of yesterday. Or the PS3 graphics of tommorrow...to the 360's graphics of today.

I'm sure there is a lot more involved in this then Epic not wanting to charge and MS wanting to charge. MS is the publisher and I bet there's contracts or something else that stipulated they needed to charge or something like that.

Point is - we are hardly hearing the whole side of the story.

Keith,

All we have seen is how PS3 coupled with a total lack of HD-DVD movies has pushed blu-ray to a slight lead.

When you actually look at the numbers of players (Counting all PS3's as players), blu-ray's sales are pathetic. HD-DVD has a much better attach rate. And sales are going to increase now that we are seeing better releases.

Actually Me was only out for a year before XP was released. It was just an interim release mainly for OEMs and new machines, and thus can't really be counted as a retail failure. It is certainly one of the most reviled versions of Windows, though I never had any trouble with it myself.

Zune may be just another mp3 player, but Microsoft is not just another company. I doubt the Zune will just fade away, likely they'll make improvements to fix the complaints people have. They didn't give up after the first Xbox and now they are reaping their rewards. Besides I don't believe the Zune is really doing as bad as people claim. I'll wait until I see some solid sales numbers.

I noticed that too. There is no denying that the 360 has a FAR superior game base and if anybody tries to say any different I am calling them a liar "in advance." Last time I checked games was the most important part of a "gaming" console. Which is the main reason why the PS2 had such success. This gen is the same as last gen just in reverse. The 360 came out first like the PS2 and the 360 has the better games like the PS2 did.

You don’t need HDMI. Most PS3 and Xbox games are 720p anyway. And if you really want 1080p you could just use the VGA cable like other people have already mentioned. Can you really tell the difference when you sit on the couch anyway when watching movies? You probably don’t even own a PS3, Xbox 360 w/HD-DVD, Blu-Ray player, HD-DVD player or a 1080p HDTV anyways to know.

Ummm… Sony forces you to get Blu-Ray (the God of War creator doesn’t like that idea either), the Xbox 360 and PS3 both have basically the same games, Xbox has better online, I can download movies and shows, the PS3 has the least amount exclusives compared the 360 AND the Wii!, graphics are basically the same, Sony removed the Emotion Engine but charges more in Europe, developers are loosing there faith in the PS3 (games that used to be or was originally supposed to be PS3 exclusives that are now on Xbox 360; Devil May Cry 4, Unreal Tournament 2007, Assassins Creed, Virtual Fighter 4, Fatal Inertia, Grand Theft Auto 4 (now with exclusive episodic content on Xbox Live), Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War, Final Fantasy, Mercenaries and Metal Gear Solid 4 is Rumored), the Xbox 360 has more games available, and all this for $200 cheaper than the PS3 (or $350 cheaper if you get the Wii).
