Has Xbox 360 Already Won the War?

By Ed Oswald | Published December 7, 2006, 1:01 PM

With Microsoft executives becoming ever more eager to tout the company's sales numbers of its Xbox 360 in public, and the dramatic success of games like Gears of War, has Redmond given itself such a head start that it will be near-impossible for Sony to catch up?

Twice in the past week, Microsoft officials have mentioned the magic 10 million number. It has significance, as in each of the previous video game generations, the first to that level ended up being the best selling console overall.

At a NASDAQ event in London, chief financial officer Chris Liddell reiterated Microsoft's forecast for 10 million consoles by the end of the Christmas season. This number has not only been mentioned by Liddell, but repeatedly by Gates, Ballmer and Xbox head Peter Moore as well.

Many analysts are cautioning that the company may be setting itself up for embarrassment and retaliation from shareholders if it fails to meet this goal. However, in an interview with Bloomberg, Moore upped the ante even more.

Asked by the news service whether the company was likely to beat that outlook, Moore agreed, saying the Thanksgiving weekend was a stellar one for Microsoft and Xbox.

Numbers obtained by BetaNews seem to back up Moore's claim. Sources say the company sold as many as 100,000 consoles per day in the period surrounding Thanksgiving weekend. Numbers were on the high end of expectations, according to the data.

Additionally, Microsoft was helped out by weaker than expected sales of both the Wii and PS3 during the same period, indicating that shoppers looking for a next-gen console may have been opting for Microsoft's entrant over others due to availability.

While the most recent data shows six million Xbox 360 consoles sold as of September 30, internal data indicates Microsoft may have sold more than eight million units as of the end of November.

Reaching the 10 million goal is just now a matter of sales: about a week ago the company shipped its ten millionth console. And from the looks of things, hitting the mark may not be that difficult.

Industry watchers are beginning to believe, too. "Microsoft's lead seems unbeatable now, fueled by a one year head start, the raging success of Gears of War as 2006's killer app, and most recently, a blitzkrieg of promotion for Halo 3, scheduled for 2007," GigaOM's Wagner James Au said.

Microsoft's Moore said the success of the Xbox 360 has much to do with its value proposition for the consumer. "Certainly the consumer is recognizing the fact that we have a great price point as well as 160 games available and that flies in the face of our competition," he told Bloomberg.

"It's not hard to be confident when you're the only show in town. Sure, PS3 and Wii have been released, but try to buy one. Short supplies mean sunny sales for Microsoft," remarked Microsoft Watch editor Joe Wilcox. "Also, Xbox 360 is HD ready at a time when HD TVs are hot items. Consumers can wait around for PS3 or Wii and likely not get one--or they could buy a Xbox 360 for their brand new HD plasma or LCD TV. Microsoft is right to boast about sales."

As the saying goes, the ball is now very much in Sony's court.

Microsoft needs to dummy up about the "10 million" number because there is no way they are going to sell through that number by the end of the year.

#'s sold to retail DON'T COUNT. That's the game Sony played for years. They are currently sitting at 7.8 million sold through to consumers which means they need to sell 2.2 million in December. That's 4 times the number they have sold in their best selling months.

I have told people ever since the ps3 was announced to come out at the time it did that it was gonna suck because it was using so much new technology. All this technology has come together to give a very s***ty machine that will most likley have loads of problems in the future. 600$ is very pricy just for a Blue-ray disc reader... why did sony put this in the machine? In my opinon, I beleive sony is being run by a bunch of retards at the moment. A good strategy for Sony right now is to stop making playstations. Come out with something totaly new and inovative... like the the Wii. It obviously brought Nintendo out of the hole from the Gamecube. Even though this is gonna be a very big hole, losing around 200$ everytime they sale one PS3, they can still get back on the horse. Playstation, was a hit. Playstation 2 was a hit, but many people had problems with there PS2 , which also another reason why some people are holding out for the PS3. PS3 its a dud, it sucks big khaonas. The graphics suck, the price sucks, the games suck, and I have heard troubles about Framerate lag.
Now the Xbox 360 on the other hand is something that every person was looking for in next gen gaming. Better graphics, more processing power. The only problem the xbox 360 had in the begging was the frezzing problem, but they did fix it for FREE. Now that the 360 has been out for 1 year it is beggining to come out with some very creative and fun new games. I have also seen many stores giving out rebates and mark down prices. They one year head start gives the XBox 360 a very big advantage. It had no competition when it was released and microsoft was reporting that they have begun to gain profits from the 360 as well. This one year head start gives Microsoft the time to think of a new gaming console that will blow everyone out of the water.
The Wii is inovative and very unique. This is the characteristics that alot of gamers where looking for in the next console. The console overall is amazing and even though there is not many games out at the time, there will be great ones in the future. The games out right now are fun just because the game is very interactive with the motion sensitive controller. Zelda coming out with the release was a very smart idea as well. Overall Nintendo made a very smart recovery from the Gamecube and left PS3 in the dust.

My positioning in the console war,

PS3, pretty much is a copy of the 360, with bluray and the sixaxis controller. Graphics so far seem pretty equal between the two. And exclusive titles are really the only separation and for me personally, that's not enough.

Oh.. and with a picaso copy, its at least going to look exactly the same. With PS3, they didn't even copy well - online still isn't what it should be.

The PS3 may be a great machine for the users, but for the developers is a pain in the rear. Hell, even the 360 is a slight pain with the amount of multithreading we have to deal with. At least with the 360, I don't have to worry about separating out specific code for the SPUs and make sure that is synchronized with the rest of the stuff running on the CPU.

Regarding the "idiots" who made and marketed it, if only you knew what the original plan was. Had it not been for nVidia, the PS3 would seriously have been PS2.5.In the end, what we have is a Blu-ray player and "would have been" DVR that was desperately retro-fitted to be a next-gen videogame console.

I have no doubt that the 360 will win this time around. Those guys in M$ have hit the sweet spot with regards to price/performance ratio and will not stop until they beat Sony. Not only is the 360 very close to being profitable, it has a SKU without the hard drive, which will allow them to come up with a sub 200 dollar console 2 years down the road.

The only wildcard this time around is the Wii . It's really hard to tell if the Wii will be able to sustain it's novelty and continue to sell. Then again, we all know the DS story.

fernz33 needs to learn how to spell and check facts before bloviating. The actual XBox 360 site (www.xbox.com) and the experience of actual XBox 360 users clarifies the HD formats issue with a dose of reality.

XBox 360's lack of HDMI support notwithstanding, the console supports 720p, 1080i, AND 1080p gaming output over the component and VGA cables.

With the HD DVD drive, the console supports 1080i output over the component video cable and 1080p over the VGA cable.

HDMI is not a technical requirement for full bandwidth 1080p signal transfer. 1080p travels perfectly well (albeit with minor degradation as compared to digital) over analog component video cables. Rather, lack of 1080p component video support for HD content has to do with the motion picture industry's desire to impose copy protection (which HDMI affords while component doesn't). This is why XBox 360 complies with this constraint over component video connections for videos but not for games.

In case anything above was unclear: HDMI is not a requirement for either 720i/p or 1080i/p high definition signal transfer. HDMI simply looks marginally better and supports both signal copy protection and simultaneous digital audio transfer over a single digital connection. The XBox 360 will transfer full 1080p HD DVD video over the available VGA connection.

Component can pass all HD signals and from what I have heard, the downscaled resolution when the flag is activated will still be higher than 720, which most people can't tell apart from 1080.

I still prefer the more natural, smoother look of component over HDMI. Remember, HDMI was not created to give you a better picture, it was created for copy protection.

Yes, Sony allowed Microsoft to attain 100% market share of the next-gen console sales out of the kindess of their hearts. Please. Do you even stop to think before you say these things?

"Now when Sony begins shipping the PS3 in earnest the XBOX market share will hit 10%."

Considering the XBOX is set to hit 10 million units sold very soon, Sony would have to sell 90 million PS3s in order to reduce their market share to 10%. That's not even taking the Wii into account. It is more likely that Sony will hold 10% of the market and the other 90% will be split between the 360 and Wii.

I mean, if you honestly believe there are tens of millions of people out there willing to pay $600 for a console, you need a serious reality check. While most of the Sony fanatics such as yourself would have gladly paid even more than that, the majority of consumers out there cannot afford such a luxury. No point to speculate though, let's just come back in a year and see where the PS3 stands. I would be very very surprised if they had much more than 10% market share. Very surprised indeed.

To the people bickering about those of us who bought multiple PS1's and PS2's, please don't be so ignorant. I know many people who went through as many as 3-6 consoles each. You don't seem to understand that when you buy a bunch of games for a console and the system itself breaks, you can't keep playing those games unless you get another console.

And yes, at that past time the PS was the only thing to get because there wasn't much else out there to compete with it, so most of the games went to the only major console out there. We have to admit, the Sega Saturn did give a lot of our hopes up. Although once N64 released it was definitely one of the greatest consoles ever. I actually knew a lot more people who owned N64 consoles, but they never, not once had to buy a second replacement and to THIS VERY DAY THEY STILL WORK 100% We still play Goldeneye 64 now and then. Definitely one of the best games of all time.

My point is, when you buy a bunch of games for a console and it consistently breaks down, we're not buying another one because we're stupid or we love the system. We're getting it because we love the games we spent a lot of money investing in. How would you feel spending up to $500 worth of a collection of games, knowing you can't play any of them anymore because the only thing that runs it crapped out? Well of course you're going to buy another console! There's little other option to it.

And yes, in that sence, I do agree that many of those PS2 sales are inflated. They should report the number of sales by CUSTOMER, and not by units sold.

PS3 is simply too much of a good deal for consumers to pass, it's got the Playstation brand that people recognise, it's got Blu-Ray, it's got the game franchises that people know. Whilst MS may have similar offerings, it's not the same.

Microsoft have been making hay, whilst the sun is shining, but things are about to change.

Whilst Marky may also rant on about Sony, most of the Microsoft fanboys here, including the Betanews editors are even worse..

I'm posting from Miami, just saw the news. I picked up a 360 with the HD-DVD and the new wireless racing wheel with PGR.

I'm coming back home tomorrow to break this bad boy open. You can add my purchase to the near ten million sold.

Is the XBOX 360 on a pace to sell over 90 million in it's lifetime? At this rate it would take about 9 years?

uh, Sony PS2 has over 90 million sales, the PS1 had nearly that much.

I personally don't care which console wins, but you cannot count Sony out until they start ramping up production.

I want to say my 2 cents, many of their 90 millions because PS/PS2 broke down all the time. Many people have to buy 2 or 3 replacements.

And as far as 360 vs ps3, I think they are more or less the same system. The WII is different.

I'll take your two cents...

So what your saying is that the PS2 was so superior to the competition that people were willing to buy a second or even a third after the others broke just to keep playing...

That's nothing but Microsoft fanboy speak. PS1/PS2 are on the whole very reliable, don't forget there are 20 times more Playstions out there than Xboxes. From a naieve outsider, it may look like high failue rates, but it's not. If anything the Xbox was where the reliability issues were, they had consoles that caught fire with the Xbox and the red ring of death on the 360..

the one PS1 (not the slim one) console we bought as group buy in my army days (all members of my squad chipped in to get one) burned down after 6 day of usage. 6 days of 24/7 usage to be exact. yes we stressed it obviously but i still believe that it shouldn't have died just from usage.
notice! no input on other consoles, just trying to say that the original PS wasn't bullet proof at all based on my experience.

however for these 6 days the PS was the most guarded object in the base, LOL! in the our guard schedule entrie for PS appeared to divide the time equally between all of us just like it was done for the watch tower, main entrance gate and armory guard posts.

Both of my PS1s broke down.. only reason I didn't get a second replacement is the PS2 was reverse compatible (so it was both a replacement and a next-gen system). My PS2 still works perfectly, but my roommate's PS2 can't read about 50% of all game discs. And these failures are left to us to pay to replace.

My brother's XBOX died.. so he got a FREE replacement.. 3-4 times. That was a worse failure rate, but it cost him nothing except a game that got stuck in one of them when it was traded in and never returned. That's not extra sales listed under XBOX, and it's not extra money out of his pocket. As it shouldn't be.

Priceless. I just came back from Best Buy ... at LEAST 150 Xbox 360s LITTER the floor - dusty from not moving. I even saw a table of PS3s on the way in (and more than half of them were still there when I left). Strange, not a single Wii to be had.

Let's say they really have SOLD 6 million - heck - even EIGHT million. It took them a year to do it. Let's say that all 4m of the Wii's sell before the end of the year; that's right - in a SINGLE month - and that's WITHOUT the killer app (which I have a feeling will be Star Wars Lightsaber Duels on the Wii). What does that say about how "Microsoft has won"?

Wait a year, then compare sales, in my opinion. By then both Sony and Nintendo's fabrication lines will be up to Microsoft's current par - a head start, while nice, is still just a head start. An exellent, unbaised point on this forum; thank you.

I own a 360 and hope for it has a bit more success than the original Xbox, but the intial sales of these consoles mean nothing in the long run; by the end of 2007 the consoles will all have their big guns out, and we will see the trends that will define the future of these sytems and the gaming market in general.

All the talk on the forums is just speculation and subjective (emotion based) reasoning. Lets wait a least a year before we zerox the web with uniformed opinions.
