High-definition Netflix streaming coming to Xbox 360

By Tim Conneally | Published October 29, 2008, 2:49 PM

A highly-anticipated aspect of the "New Xbox Experience" dashboard upgrade for Microsoft's Xbox 360 is the addition of streaming Netflix content. Today, it has been revealed that the content will include some 300 high-definition titles as well.

Though Xbox Live Primetime has been delayed until next spring, the November 19 upgrade to the Xbox 360 dashboard includes a beau geste from Netflix: exclusive access to the service's streaming HD content.

Engadget previewed the new Xbox 360 dashboard, and discovered the Netflix Movie Marketplace includes titles in HD.

The Xbox 360 is therefore the first device supporting Netflix's service in HD, before the Netflix-enabled Blu-ray players, before the popular Roku Player, and before Mac users even have support for desktop SD streams with Silverlight.

There is no word yet when the service will be unveiled for the other five devices currently supporting Netflix streaming.

This will be a major plus for the Xbox 360 over the PS3 and Wii.

Remember that 1280 X 720 is considered "HD". Anything less than this would suck.

From the engadget preview looks like Media Centre. As for those plans for unlimited 9.99 a month thats not bad considering the costs.

This will be an interesting update; if this is where we are at with the 360 i can only imagine what theyre next gen will allow. Definitly agree that this type of interface is a move in the right direction for the 360.

No surprise that the other devices aren't sure when they will support this.

It's a first step in the right direction. As time goes on I'm sure picture quality will improve, assuming you have the bandwith.
