IBM to Cut 1,300 Service-based Jobs

IBM has given pink slips to approximately 1,300 workers in its services division. The cuts are aimed at getting costs under control in the United States. The cuts mean a reduction of less than a half a percent of its total worldwide workforce. Laid off employees have an opportunity to apply for jobs within IBM which they may be qualified for before their positions are officially terminated.
The Armonk, New York based company has made no public announcement of the layoffs: word of the cuts first appeared in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday through sources from IBM's union "The Alliance at IBM." IBM's general policy is to not announce layoffs, says the paper.
In my mind there are 2 IBMs: 1. The technology company that we all know. 2. The outsourcing company.
The tech company is great. I can't think of another company that constantly creates more technology and breakthroughs. Their semi-conductor research is amazing. They have done incredible work in supercomputing, database retrieval, mass storage, etc... I have total respect for these people.
On the other hand, the out-sourcing company is a NIGHTMARE!!! I work for a company who uses IBM as our outsourcing partner. It is a mess. The contract is 8 inches thick and it is as ambiguous as Bill Clinton on trial. In fact, the outsourcing arrangements are typically so bad, that there are companies whose sole existence is to renegotiate contracts between IBM and its customers. We are in the middle of this right now.
I don't know how a single company can have two polar opposite faces.

|Welcome to the american way. We have the least amount of vacation days and work the most hours, why do people go NUTS.. I envy Europe and Asia they get 4 -5 weeks off a year plus tons of holidays.
I felt guilty taking 4 days off during Christmas and that was after 18 months of hard work.

|Well, I work at IBM and my site was impacted with this lay off. So far we have lost 40 people. What really sucks is what they are expecting of the people that are still around, 80 - 90 hour weeks, no overtime.
So there you go. I'll be tossing my resume on monster; overworked.

I've not heard anything about them in the last 5 years or so.
