IBM Offers New Collaboration Tools

IBM on Wednesday launched new software that it says will improve the effectiveness of collaboration between teams in a software company and reduce project failures. Called the Rational Method Composer, it replaces the Rational Process Workbench with new process customization tools.

On October 12, IBM donated about a half-million lines of code to open source that fell under the Rational Unified Process. The latest offering will also fall under the RUP and add new best practices to their method.

"IBM Rational Method Composer is a significant upgrade of RUP and a natural complement to the proposed contribution of tooling and process guidance to the Eclipse open source community," said Roger Oberg, Vice President of Marketing at IBM Rational.

"By helping to create a broad ecosystem around best practices, and offering complementary solutions for enterprise-wide development projects, IBM enables organizations to leverage the collective expertise of the entire industry to create innovative, high-quality software."

The tools will help IT teams better manage software projects by providing templates to help teams create project goals, figure out milestones and make better use of their resources.

The amount of time it would take to customize best practices would be reduced "from weeks and days to hours and minutes," IBM said.

The new Rational Method Composer tools are expected to be made available by the end of the year at a cost of $395 USD per user.
