ICQ Now Ad-ware?
By Andrew Niese | Published July 25, 2000, 3:25 AM
In a move that was not entirely unexpected, America Online took advantage of ICQ's little known 'Auto Update' Monday, modifying all ICQ 2000a clients to display advertisements while using its 'Send URL' and Birthday features. The ads are 335x57 pixels and appear below the ICQ windows.
First noticed by Internet "counter culture" group, The Kult, ICQ users started seeing advertisements late Monday afternoon after launching the ICQ application. Based on initial observations, it seems ICQ must be restarted before Auto Update kicks in to patch the client. For those not yet affected, the Auto Update feature can still be disabled before the client is patched. Although Auto Update can no longer be turned off by the ICQ preferences dialog, there is a registry value that can be changed to give the same effect.

Users who wish to prevent Auto Update from kicking in, can open the Window's Registry Editor and browse to the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mirabilis\ICQ\Owners\(Your UIN)\Prefs" key, locate a key value named "Auto Update", and changing it's value to "No".
Understandably, the new advertisements have not exactly been welcomed with enthusiasm. One long time ICQ user writes, "I am disgusted by the way ICQ [is] treating it's users- I distinctly remember an option to disable AutoUpdate in previous versions." AOL, which owns the ICQ franchise, has included advertisements in its similar AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) client for several years. Some had predicted, correctly, that it would only be a matter of time before that strategy was applied to its widely used ICQ application.

|Hello,
I’ve been a big fan of ICQ for years now. When AOL got their greedy little hands on it, the first thing that came to mind was ads. What’s wrong with AOL? Why are they so damn greedy? I know its business and all but there has to be some kind of limit. Even Microsoft doesn’t go that far (and they have better stuff!). I don’t want to hear, "It’s free, if you don’t like it don’t use it" bulls***! ICQ is a well-made program. I even like the extra stuff that came with 2000, but there is no need at all for ads.
Do you know how many people make free programs that DON’T put ads in it? Sure it’s more common now, but it’s not like AOL needs that extra money. What about it’s AOL Software (America Online), why do they need ads on the Download Window, Chat window and Download Forum? Come on! We PAY for this service and we still take the ads up our ass. I’m quite sick of it.
For all you WinAmp users, you might want to head on down to http://www.winamp.com and download a copy and back it up. Because now that AOL has its hands on it, ads are sure to follow. I wasn’t always this Anti-AOL guy, No siree. I loved their service back in the early 90’s! But once they got popular things got out of hand.
As I see it now, there is nothing we can do about this, because AOL seems not to care about its users. But there has to be something we can do, it’s US the ICQ users that control the service. If it weren’t for us there would be no ICQ or AOL for that matter!

A product or service need only be offered under certain conditions and then be change once the comsumer's been taken in. ICQ is a defacto standard, and they offered the service under certain conditions which we have a right to expect them to maintain. No, I don't believe AOL has the right to modify their terms in this way, even though the service is free (nothing is free btw. Obviously they've been getting something from it till now. Given the anti-consumer behavior of big business generally and AOL specifically, they've likely been selling our info w/o our permission...) Once you have a huge userbase and an effective monopoly, you no longer have the right to say "it's our way or the highway." The alternatives out there- other instant messaging systems and half-functional universal messaging clients- are not viable alternatives either. Firstly, changing from one system to another is a technical and logistical nightmare- just ask any corporation or other large bureaucratic body (IBM learned an important lesson about that once upon a time....) Secondly, the average user doesn't have the technical wherewithall or time to switch to something else, and get all their contacts to switch as well. These days, instant messaging is becomming increasingly mission-critical to businesses, as important a tool as email for *all*. Mirabilis/AOL should be taken out and shot for this kind of BS as far as I'm concerned....

|I saw someone complain that the reason this happened was because the internet users were all cheap-skates who wanted everything for free. I think this is too much of a generalization. For the most part people do want the software for free but mostly not because they are cheap but because they cannot afford it. There are a lot of people out there that do not have alot of money and are having to run off bargain equipment with free software out of necessity. Let's not forget those people.
What I find moronic about all of these companies and their ad campaigns is that they know ads fit into a law of diminishing returns. The more ads placed the less people appear to take notice of them. I completely skip over some pages, magazine, tv programs, radio stations etc. just because of the amount of ads in them. There are now ad blockers for the internet, and as personal TV systems like TIVO and Replay become more prevelent it will become very easy to just tape every show you want sans commercials. How then will the marketeers get their product information across? They'll probably put the ads right in the middle of the show like in "The Truman Show". This has already started, ever notice in the movies how the Apple logo is always focused on or Coke/Pepsi cans always have the name visible when the cop goes to take a drink.
So when ads start sponsoring the next generation of movies what will happen? People will go back to books for entertainment? Maybe. Maybe people will just sell out and start renting the backs of their asses for advertisement space, who knows. I for one am just tuning out all of the ads and I know others are too.
The more ignorant aspect of it all is that it doesn't have to be like this. AOL could create a non-advertisement version that people could (and would) buy in order to avoid the ads. But that's AOL for you.
