ICQ Wants Your Opinion on Ads
By Justin Jenkins | Published March 15, 2001, 12:11 AM
It seems ICQ has posted a link on their Web site's front page that reads "Banners on ICQ Messages?! Voice your opinion here!" It includes a link to a message board on ICQ's Web site as well as a link to the BetaNews article and forum. Make your voice heard and tell us what you think about the addition of banner ads to ICQ messages.
The patch that was posted earlier works perfectly. I didn't have to go through using an older version. I was very upset with AOL when all of a sudden I had banners that I didn't ask for and they didn't even put an option in the preferences for you to turn them on or off. I handle network security and noticed that the banners open up quite a few ports and this anerves me to no end because this leaves me open. The only way to not have those ports open is to remove ICQ completely.

If I were on their board, I being a doc and having nothing to do with marketing, the following would have been my recommendation:
Netscape made the navigator free to attract users to the Netcenter which generated all their revenue.
Now AOL ICQ can copy the model. for example, while users search for other people on ICQ, instead of limiting the return addresses to 40, ICQ can make a searchable, ad enabled whitepages (like bigfoot.com).
Also, they can improve the online status bar and encourage all personal homepage builders to incorporate them into their pages.. they have to push it still...
If they really want to shove those stupid ads in every ICQ user, I should tell them to update, renovate and build newer ICQ versions very often and offer downloads (only) from their home pages.
so guys... what do you think?

|At our business we are currently running ICQ on all our machines. Some have older versions of ICQ (99b) and some have 2000a and up. After we came back from the weekend, none of my 2000a and up clients could connect. All my 99b clients could however. I knew it wasn't an issue with ICQ since I am using 2000b at home with no problems. To make a long story short, I downloaded trillian to see if it could connect from my machine to the icq network, and it did no problem! I wondered what the difference was between the connection Trillian was using and ICQ was using. Turns out, Trillian uses login.oscar.aol.com, while ICQ 2000a and up uses login.icq.com. I put login.oscar.aol.com into my ICQ client, AND SURE ENOUGH IT CONNECTED! We are running a firewall here, which has ICQ allowed to go through, but this makes no sense. I put that login server into all the 2000 clients that weren't working, and sure enough it now works. Man I hate AOL!!!

AT&T of course never emailed me back saying anything was wrong, but that's the way it goes when you get big I guess. Same thing with AOL too...buy things up and make them worse. And of course never get a response (unless it's automated) from them either. Now if I could just add AOL users to my ICQ list (and don't tell me to use trillian or odigo, I have and I do, but AOL owns both ICQ and AIM, make them interoperable!) I would be set. No. Forget about complaining, forget about the possibility that they might take note of what's said in this forum. Whenever someone does something unpopular to a piece of software, there's someone around who will find a way around it and make it available to everyone. If they release an upgraded version, the cracker will release an updated crack. Just use http://astalavista.box.sk for cracks.
I've seen people mentioning this Trillian software so I'll check it out. I've never been enamoured with MSNM, YPager or even the idea of installing AIM, what with it being AOL software which I've always tried to avoid like the plague. Gutted that they've bought out Mirabilis as I've never had any problems with ICQ, I use a fair few of its features, file transfer, SMS (being UK based, the SMS feature is particularly useful), mail checking, voice messages, VoIP, direct connection live chat etc, simply because they are all available from one simple user interface. Anyone who finds ICQ hard to use is, quite frankly, a moron.
I also run ICQPlus, from http://www.icqplus.org, with which I have no problem either. Probably the best (if not the only?) skin application for ICQ. The best thing about ICQ, and the reason I prefer it over most other apps, is its ability to find a way out through a firewall. It's the only chat program I have found which can fool the firewall admins where I work, and for that I'm grateful.
So, my advice is, keep ICQ if you like it, crack it to get rid of the bits you don't like. Simple.

Please, !!!!! read the following carefully if you intend to stay
online and continue using email.
The last few months have revealed an alarming trend in the Government of
the United States attempting to quietly push through legislation that
will affect our use of the internet.
Under the proposed legislation, the U. S. Postal Service will be
attempting to bill email users out of alternative postage fees. Bill
602P will permit the Federal Government to charge 5 cent surcharge on
every email delevered by billing ISP's at source. The consumer would
then be billed in turn by the ISP
Washington D. C. lawyer, Richard STepp is working withoug pay to prevent
this legislation from becoming law. The U. S. Postal Service is
claiming lost revenue due to the proliferation of email...is costing
nearly 230,000 in revenue per year. You may have noticed their new ad
campaign, there's nothing like a letter....Since the average person
receives about 10 pieces of amil per day...the cost typically could be a
minimum of .50 a day or 180.00 a year, over and above the cost you are
now paying for your regular internet usage.
NOTE: this money is going to be paid directly to the U. S. Postal
Service ....and they do not even provide a service for these fees. The
whole point
of the Internet is democracy and noninterference. You are already
paying an exorbitant price forsnail mail because of bureaucratic
efficiency. It currently takes upto 6 daysfor a letter to be delivered
from coast to coast.
If the US Postal Service is allowedto tinker with E-mail, it will mark
the end of the free" Internet
in the United States. Our congressional representative, TonySchnell (R)
has even suggested a
"$20-$40 per month surcharge on all Internet service" above andbeyond
the governments proposed
E-mail charges
Note that most of the major newspapers have ignored the story -the only
exception being the Washingtonian - which called the idea of E-mail
surcharge "a useful concept who's time has come" March 6th, 1999
Editorial).
Do not sit by and watch your
freedom erode away! Send this E-mail to EVERYONE on your list,
and tell all your friends and relatives to write their congressional
representative and say "NO" to Bill 602P. It will only take afew moments
of your time andcould very well be instrumental inkilling a bill we do
not want.

|wtf has the spec of your machine got to do with anything!? geeesh people used to say cars were an extension to a part of a guys anatomy, you seem to think your pc spec is apparently!
mines a 1ghz tbird running at 1.1ghz, with 512mb ram btw, so mines bigger than yours nuhnuhnanuhnuh!
anyway, if you werent too busy looking for an excuse to start braggin about what you got, i think you will find they were talking about disk space used not ram.
incidently, my icq install uses 2.9mb ram, 161mb disk space.

|What's wrong? how can you compare resource usage without sys specs? Anyway, I quit ICQ when it reached 6megs download, it's just too much. I se msn now, it doesn't have many features, but it's quick and at least lets you change your screen name without everyone else having to update their copies of your profile.
