IE7 to Use Firefox's RSS Feed Icon
By Nate Mook | Published December 14, 2005, 6:15 PM
Since the announcement that Internet Explorer 7 would add built-in support for RSS news feeds there has been much discussion over two key points: what to call them and what icon to use. Microsoft developers shared conceptual designs in October, but have now settled on a preexisting icon -- Firefox's.
"I'm excited to announce that we're adopting the icon used in Firefox," said Jane Kim, program manager for RSS in IE. "We'll be using the icon in the IE7 command bar whenever a page has a feed associated with it, and we'll also use it in other places in the browser whenever we need a visual to represent RSS and feeds." Microsoft says it will continue to work with Mozilla to encourage consistency between browsers.

And finally, for the funniest statement I've read on this site "Microsoft says it will continue to work with Mozilla to encourage consistency between browsers." Right, since NONE of Microsoft's sites work to their fullest on Firefox. Exchange servers are hideously watered down (no HTML e-mail composition, no preview frame, etc.), MSN.com can view videos, Hotmail.com doesn't work as well, etc. Yeah, great job encouraging consistency.

It must be comforting for current users of IE 7 to know that they have a stable, feature-rich, browsing experience to dream about, as opposed to firefox's users, who must deal with the harsh reality of actually enduring built-in RSS feeds today, not to mention having to decide between more than 800 extenstions to the browser's functionality and the ability to change the browser's appearance to anything, including making it look like the vastly superior IE 7, whatever that looks like.

I am not convinced that this was really simple theft of an idea from Firefox. The chosen icon has been in use for a while, and is the one that people accept and understand. As a metaphor for the activity it represents, it is lousy, but Microsoft seems to have accepted that it's too late to change it now.
Who DID design it anyway? Surely that person deserves a mention in the announcement? And are they not entitled to royalties for their creation? If it was me then I would be updating my CV to say, "I developed some of the user interface artwork for Microsoft's IE 7."

There is this new group of developers and managers that are much more open, more willing to talk about the projects that they are working on. It’s a bigger deal then most people realize, to say something like “Our years of experience in with HTML in Internet Explorer have taught us the long-term pain that results from being too liberal with what you accept from others” is a big deal.
The other change I have noticed is that there are more anti-Microsoft people out there, with fewer good reasons to hate the company.
