Intel Demos 'Game Changing' Chips

By Ed Oswald | Published June 6, 2006, 11:36 AM

In a highly anticipated keynote, Intel executive Anand Chandrasekher introduced new products and technologies to attendees of Computex Taipei on Tuesday. This includes a new processor design that saves energy while offering increased performance over its predecessors.

New processors based on this architecture are expected to begin shipping this summer. Central to the Intel Core 2 Duo is the new Intel 965 Express Chipset. The chipset includes technologies that would speed memory access times, as well as up DDR2 support speeds to 800 MHz. Support for high-definition audio and quieter operation is also included.

Later this year, Intel will introduce an integrated graphics chipset, the C965. The chipmaker will include a technology called Clear Video, which would enhance high-definition playback of video.

Chandrasekher said that these chips would form the basis of VIIV and vPRO systems to be released in the coming months. He also disclosed that Intel plans to release Intel Core 2 Extreme processors with speeds of 2.93 GHz in July, and 3.2 GHz later this year.

"There is a tremendous amount of excitement and anticipation for our forthcoming server, desktop and notebook processors based on the Core microarchitecture," Chandrasekher said.

"The message to the industry is simple," he continued. "We are bringing a massive amount of new products and technologies to the market starting today that will change the game in terms of what technology can do for you."

New breakthroughs in energy efficiency were also demonstrated during the keynote. Chandrasekher demoed a Intel Core Duo processor that would consumer less than a watt of electricity while still allowing for acceptable performance. The processor will be available in notebook computers by the summer.

1 watt...wow, they took a page out of VIA's book.

What I want to know is whether this will impact macs or mac laptops in anyway?

I think Steve Jobs made Intel sign a contract stating that innovation/supply will not be compromised with Apple.
Don't worry... Apple will get the latest.

Yeah, ok, but... how soon?
I was really close to buying a macbook pro... does this mean that two months after I buy it, there will be a faster one on the market, the one I purchased will drop 500 bucks?

how long till intel starts competing with IBM as both a chip manufacturer and computer manufacturer?

I don't think they're competing at all.

IBM CPU - Consoles.

Intel - PCs.

I wouldn't be suprised if they borrow a bit from eachother's playbooks, but I doubt we'll see any head-to-head competition between these two. At least, not in the forseeable future.

Then again...

Considering IBM dont make computers its unlikely.

IBM?
What a joke! The have a lot of problems in their NY fab. Why do you think Apple ditched them? Why do you think IBM sold its overseas PC manufacturing to a Chinese firm (Lenovo)?

AMD signed a contract with IBM so they could use IBM's processor technologies in their 64-bit processors and AMD's processors certainly don't have any of the problems that the failed PowerPC G5 processor had.
