Intel Plans August Core 2 Duo Launch

By the Betanews Staff | Published July 27, 2006, 11:20 AM

Intel said on Thursday that it was aiming to ship its new Core 2 Duo processors next month, with the desktop models shipping in early August and the laptop models shipping late in the month. While pricing has not been announced for the laptop processors, a total of ten desktop chips will be shipped with prices ranging from 21,230 yen ($182.50) to 115,900 yen ($996.30), according to Reuters. The chips were originally known by the code names "Conroe" and "Merom."

Both processor models consume less energy and are more powerful than their predecessors. Intel will also issue a "Core 2 Extreme" processor for high-performance systems. The new processor lineup replaces the original Core Due, and is seen by analysts as a move to counter recent market share gains by competitor AMD.

No. New Core 2 Duo is WAY better than fastest Athlon (FX-62, IFAIK), and performance boost is somewhere between 10% and 30% (application specific).
Of course Core 2 Duo upgrade is not for gamers - difference between C2D and FX-62 on resolutions more than 1280x1024 is small (less than 10%). But for everyone else new Intel chips are really great. Can't wait to try 2-threaded x264 encoding on these babies!
And the price. Core 2 Duo E6700 (wich is only high-end, not TOP) beats FX-62 all around, but will cost only ~$500. Core 2 Duo E6600 is slightly better than FX-62 and will cost you ~$300-400.
Core 2 Extreme X6800 is worthless. It's only slightly better than E6700 (and you have to get GOOD cooler, because X6800 is HOT, else throttling will slow X6800 down to E6700), but price is afwul: ~$1000
I'm sure, good-enough-to-be-bought motherboards-with-C2D-support will come in August. I suppose, 965P or 946PL chipsets will be good choise.

you forget to mention, not only are they 10% - 25% faster than a FX62, they also use 30% less power (65W).

Hmm... I thought they were shipping today. :( As it is our stock will be late and overpriced in Aus. There's already a significant number of them around though - even someone local I know has one. Must be a lot of test chips that went for sale.

Planning to ship? I thought these were shipped a week or two ago. You know, with all those 4 ghz+ ones I'm seeing in reviews. Oh, that was a paper launch. My bad.

Mark,
You have one on order, with who may I ask?
I looked for some vender that was pre-ordering, I found no one. The price listed for the cpu's was alot more than what was forcasted. The 6600 was price at $316 & the 6700 was priced $530. Is this close to what you will pay?
Thanks, Don
