Can anyone tell me what the name of Philip's MP3 CD Player is?

aah yes, thank you, been trying to think of the name of the darn thing since Saturday, and it's not on Philip's main site, and it doesn't look like anyone is selling it anymore.

One good thing is that pulldowns on the Links toolbar now open a lot faster. And they seem to have fixed the bug where if you're browsing with more than one window open, clicking on a Favorite from the Links toolbar causes the link to open in one of the background (inactive) browser windows ... it now seems to know what the active window is. But now, if you're browsing with more than one window open, the status bar often disappears, or goes "flat" (3D shadows disappear) and the Zone icon (Internet, Intranet, trusted Site, etc.) disappears.

Score: 0

Yup, same problem with staus bar here. It usually disappears afters a bit of navigation, then I have to go to "View", uncheck status bar, then re-check it and it starts showing up again.

Score: 0

I've found that if you just click on any of the top-level pulldowns (File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help) and then release, that brings the status bar back. Another bug: If you click on a link from the Quick Launch Toolbar and more than one browser window is open, most of the time the link opens in an inactive window, unless you drag the link to the active window. Sheesh, when are they ever gonna get this right?!

I had 550.4308.2900 version no problems. I installed this update. They deleted the cookie delete feature of last version and whenever I was using reply on hotmail..i would get an error and shutdown of IE. It would then want to send an error report to microsoft.. I have decided to uninstall and go back to previous version...

For that one guys comment about him putting on IE 5 Service Pack 1 on that one version and saying that they got rid of the cookie delete feature....man are people dumb now a days...buddy, get a reality check. you had IE 5 Advanced Privacy Beta on, then you put the SP1 onto of that, which is what I did. Of course it gets rid of the cookie delete feature. You copied over top of the AP version with the SP1 of the REGULAR IE!! jeez...

For me I upgraded IE 5.01 to IE 5.5 and so far IE 5.5 blows. It loads slower, and stops responding more then IE 5. When's IE 6 supposed to be released, or will MS pull a Netscape and just skip a version to 7?

Score: 0

|

There's a version 6, it's already going into beta testing. The only reason Netscape skipped a version was because they were (are) so far behind and they didn't want to look bad. Too bad doing that made them look even worse.

As far as 5.5, it's running fine on my system; I'm very happy with it so far.

Me either. The last unstable version of IE was 4.0x. Ever since 5.0, it's been completely stable -- only crashes about once every two months.

This internet explorer is definately much much faster then the last one. I actually do not have to uninstall it now. I have win 2k and the last one was slow as hell.

you appear correct, but it is still noticeably slower than the IE version 5.01 that came built into w2k. that's for sure.

The favicon.ico feature (both in IE5 and IE5.5) is gone :(
All of my favorites' icons are [e] again.

Score: 0

All of these icons are stored in the temporary internet files folder, so every time it is empties you lose your icons. There is a great program though called FavOrg, that will scan all of the sites in your favorites list, and if they have icons it will download them into it's own folder so you'll never lose them. You can get this program from http://www.zdnet.com/dow...es/info/0,,001BXO,.html

Nice program! Thanks!

Even when I removed a site from my favorites and added it again the icon did not appear. (as should be in ie5/5.5 (sp0 ;-))

Maybe i'm completly wrong, but I *never* knew there was a version of IE for unix platforms. I always thought that NS was the only thing ported. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. If i'm not wrong, then why the heck is:
"Unix version contains software licensed from Mainsoft Corporation. Copyright (c) 1998-1999 Mainsoft Corporation" in the text box, in the IE About Dialog? Unix Version?!?

There were IE ports made for Solaris and HP-UX.

Create a shortcut for instant start of IE:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

Score: 0

It would be nice if that were the magic fix, but overall that doesn't speed anything up at all. While it will make IE appear on the screen faster, it will slow down the loading of the first page you go to. In other words, it merely delays the startup of the HTML engine until after you type in a URL.

does anyone have any comments on load time. i use w2k sp1 and i have always found that IE5.01 loads faster and the system seems to be faster in general with 5.01 than with 5.5. does anyone have any comments on this?

I noticed the same thing on my Win2K machine, so I uninstalled it and have kept with IE5.01 that came with Windows 2000. Might the SP1 for it fix it? I don't know. But is it really worth it? It doesn't seem that much is different besides Print Preview and the new IE dialer shows the number being dialed when you use it...

Hi.
I'm using Win98SE. So far I've had no problems. The only thing I found odd was that MS Messenger was installed automatically. I don't use any messaging services at all. This is no big deal. But I usually choose a custom install - this time I didn't. Is this a new MS thing? - installing MS Messenger as a default app?

Is this something new? I can't find it anywhere.

The browser window bug has been fixed at least (the one where the window closed every time a download started).

Is it more stable than the older version ?
. any they finally leave this nasty bug !.. lol

I've only had it for one day but it seems very stable; in fact I haven't had a single problem with it...yet. I'm running it on Windows ME.

But the question still begs, where's the connection manager ? Is it the connection tab in Internet Properties ? Because MS was touting as that as new... but hasn't it been around since 5.0 ?

Score: 0

I've looked all through the internet options and help files, and I can't find any such thing. I even asked in the Microsoft news groups, and nobody knew what this connection manager thing is. I also don't understand what it means by "if dial-up networking is already installed".

I installed it and had no problems yet *knock on wood*

Score: 0

I'm using Win98, and i get the exact same thing. I'm not even going to try rebooting, screw it.

Score: 0

IIRC, that error means that some program has called MoveFileEx (or on Win9x, written to WININIT.INI), to replace files on the next reboot. Disable whatever program that's doing it, and the problem should go away. It's not an IE bug.

Score: 0

|

you've said it buddy! Any program that calls MoveFileEx will cause Windows to replace files on bootup. However, IE doesn't like that. you must complete all installations of programs before you install IE (this may require more than one reboot). You can also try going into WININIT.INI and deleting the Rename entries.

Score: 0

Or just reboot? Thats what I did when I got that message, and it then installed fine. Strange but true, following the instructions worked for once.
