Is Apple making overall headway with the iPhone 3G?

As Apple rolled out the iPhone 3G to 21 more counties last week, T-Mobile pointed to sales of 120,000 of the phones already in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands, despite distribution and connectivity problems.
T-Mobile experienced delivery delays in all three countries, but customers complained about connectivity only in the Netherlands, according to Hamid Akhavan, CEO of T-Mobile's parent company, Deutsche Telecom.
"Our sales expectations were surpassed," said Akham, in an interview published today the the German news magazine Focus.
However, some customers in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands had to wait weeks for delivery of the iPhones they'd ordered, he acknowledged, attributing the delays to Apple's launch of the iPhone in 21 others countries on Friday of last week.
Instituted in keeping with Apple's often repeated sales goal of 10 million iPhone 3Gs for 2008, last week's rollouts included Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Ecaudor, El Savador, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, and Uruguay.
Also, Apple is now rumored to be talking with three Russian carriers about possible introduction of the iPhone in Russia during the month of October.
Meanwhile, in a posting on its Web site Friday, AT&T said that Apple's 16 GB iPhone 3G is available in most of its US stores today, and that AT&T will be restocking its stores with an 8 GB model later this week.
Also according to Akhavan, however, like users in many other countries, some Dutch users have complained about dropped calls and slowed access, with the phone reportedly reverting to lower speeds than 3G.
As previously reported in BetaNews, one user in the US has now filed a lawsuit charging Apple with false advertising in promising that the iPhone 3G performs "twice as fast for half the price."
Yet last week, too, Apple released a firmware upgrade aimed at improving connectivity performance. While many users have continued to complain, others could be benefiting from connectivity improvements.
In tests conducted at the labs of Swedish-based Bluetest, a vendor of wireless test equipment, researchers found little difference in signal transmission and reception between the iPhone, Sony Ericsson's P1 phone, and the Nokia N73.
"The P1 is a little better at receiving signal and the N73 a little better at sending signals. But the difference is small. The difference between the iPhone's and the P1's receive sensitivity is 2 dB," according to an article which appeared today in the Swedish newspaper Goteborgs-Posten (The Gothenburg Post).
The tests in Sweden also showed no differences between the three phones in their ability to maintain network connections, in the midst of noise from other wireless signals.
On the other hand, as previously reported in BetaNews, last week's iPhone rollouts received ho-hum responses in countries such as India and Poland, where availability and 3G connectivity issues seem to be overshadowed by affordability and a lack of widespread Internet access, which is necessary for activation.

To be honest, I live in Ohio and they're still generating huge lines for the iPhone. So I don't really doubt what internetworld7 was saying... although, you can tell he's a huge fanboy. That aside, I picked up an iphone a couple weeks ago and I'm impressed. If you live in central ohio, you get fantastic service with 3G speeds at about 780kbs. The highest I have seen is 1200kbs and the lowest 348kbs. I'm overall, satisfied with my purchase. I wouldn't worry too much about porting your software over. For now, its the closest thing to a true pocket PC.
I've noticed a lot of people complaining about how they don't have 3G as though that's Apple's problem. Also, I saw a post about how India has to pay so much more for the phone. What you guys are failing to understand is that you're buying a phone. With that phone you get a service plan from a service provider. For USA, its AT&T. AT&T is subsidizing the iPhone's cost which is why I paid $300 for my 16gig instead of the $599 they were charging a few months ago.
The first generation iphone was a profit share between Apple and AT&T. Apple got a cut of the monthly AT&T service plans. That is no longer the deal. AT&T pays the $300 to Apple and I get a cheaper phone but a more expensive service plan.
With all that said. 3G is only as good as your service provider. So if your 3G service sucks in your area, then you're not going to get the speeds that are advertised. There is no breech of contract or misleading ads. You just didn't do your research before you bought the phone. How many of you look to make sure you have service before you buy into a cellphone company? The same rules apply when you're buying a smart phone. You need to make sure you have the reception in the areas that you frequent or it will be worthless to you.

The intelligent consumers are buying phones that are Java capable, have removeable sim cards, removeable batteries and basically, phones that can handle a 3G environement. Apple is scrambling with patches for it's telephony because THEIR product is the problem. Not the network.

What other company on earth generates this type of massive hysteria and obsessions with it's products other than Apple? These people still forming long lines at Apple stores across America and other countries come from all walks of life.
The iPhone is what is fueling the massive Mac market share growth and eventually will be the cause of making Microsoft obsolete in the near future! :)

Here in India, we don't have 3G, so the 3G functionality is pretty useless.
To top that, Apple hasn't stuck to its promise of 'twice the speed, for half the price'. The 8gb model costs $700, while the 16gb model costs $800, with a lock-in to an operator. For a third world country, making us pay 3-4x the cost in US is ridiculous.
That's like 4x the price, at half the speed.
I wouldn't be surprised if the latest Samsung, HTC touch phones become iphone killers, along with the latest line of HTC touch.
It's about time Apple had some competition breathing down their neck to get them to not take consumers hostage.

|You too are right of course - no 3G so the claims of 3G performance are a violation of its 'promise' - get a grip! If there is no 3G the claims of increased 3G performance are superfluous! And only an idiot would expect something that doesn't even exist!
Yeah, and of course you are right again! Apple has no competition in the cell phone business. In fact, if I remember correctly, Apple invented cell phones and has a monopoly...so its nice to see a company like Samsung decide to finally make a cell phone - although I am sure they realize entering the cell phone business is a risking venture.
Its one thing to hold Apple accountable for the things they do, but quite another to simply make sh!t up!
