It's Official: No PS3 Until November

By Ed Oswald | Published March 15, 2006, 10:54 AM

Sony confirmed Wednesday reports that it will delay the launch of its highly anticipated PlayStation 3 console until November. At that time, the company will launch the product simultaneously in Japan, Europe and the United States, Sony officials said.

However, Sony will be facing availability issues that Microsoft will likely have resolved with the Xbox 360 by the holidays, analysts say.

Sony says at launch, PS3 consoles would be produced at the rate of one million per month. Thus, the number of available units for the Christmas season may number less than one million per market, with wide-scale availability not occurring until well into 2007.

Sony's failure to get the console into consumers' hands by its expected spring 2006 launch date has a lot to do with its Blu-ray drive, according to the Nikkei Keizai business daily. At issue is the copy protection technology used within the drive.

The PS3's Blu-ray issues also throw a wrench into Sony's plans to offer an inexpensive next-generation DVD player. The company is locked in a fierce battle with Toshiba and HD DVD, who will have players out this month, and an HD DVD player for Xbox 360 is expected later in the year.

In a statement, Sony would not specifically confirm Blu-ray as being the problem, only lauding the format's specifications and saying "SCEI, together with the support and cooperation of game content creators around the world, will strongly promote the creation of a new world of computer entertainment available on PS3."

Wow. My the time Sony finally releases this thing MS will have a ZBOX and Nintendo will have an Insurrection.

The problem as always is marketing. I think they're confused in light of what market they're going to cater to. See, on one hand you're catering to ultra mega gamers and superstar's and their kids who can afford, and will buy a gaming system for over 700 dollars - on that same level, these are the people who have no issues with copy protection because they're not interested in pirating/stealing/sharing it and they don't care if it breaks 10 times because they can just go buy another copy (they'll also be the people who never ever, ever, ever buy used games).
On the other hand, you're losing millions of gamers who buy second hand products and extend the longevity of a devices selling life...the aftermarket per se, since when the PS3 is "old news", Sony still wants to be able to make money from it (like now where they're selling PS2s for 150 and good games for 10). So they're essentially between the devil and the deep blue sea.
MS went the way of, ok...upgrade some hardware but leave it affordable enough so any kid or game enthusiast can save up (at the least) and buy one, lets make some money but not overkill.
Now before you decide to flame me, know that I own a PS2 and I'm not on any sides. Sony is just that kind of company and it's catching up with them.

I don't know why people even bother buying the XBOX360, G4TV has called it the XBOX1.5 because its mostly small changes and not a whole lot of new technology being put into the machine. Furthermore, and here's the big one, out of all 3 next-gen consoles, the XOBX360 is the first to come out, and way earlier than the other 2. Thus, both the PS3 and revolution have more time to add and perfect. Buying the 360 in my opinion is a very bad idea because the other consoles are most likely going to be better.

MS only has the 360 to offer, the PS3 and Revolution both have handheld companions (PSP and DS), meaning even more inovative functionality. The original XBOX came out after the PS2, and doesn't anyone find it funny how fast they've released another system? I know Sony has had it delays, but to me it just seems like MS rushed it.

With two more consoles on the way, MS isn't going to have that big of an advantage, a lot of people are highly anticipating these consoles and are willing to wait, as it is well worth it.

You are exactly right, that's what I've been telling people.

Remember this:
There are only a little more than a million Xbox 360's sold in THE ENTIRE WORLD as of March 1st.
There aren't a lot of games, and even fewer good games for it.
Call it the Xbox 180, that's what I call it.
Microsoft said they wanted 2.5-3 Million by the end of the year, then they said 4.5-5 Million by May, then 5 Million by the end of June or July. They probably won't crack 3 Million by the time the PS3 comes out with 1 Million strong each month.
Microsoft said they would have 2 Million at launch, another company said 1.7 Million, it ended up 363,000.

Microsoft is a very stupid company.

Score: 0

That's it - Sony's Done in that market. MS already had a much stronger foothold on the strategic future of console gaming, namely the online market and now will cement that hold into a hammerlock. Sony will not be able to recover and while sales of PS3 will of course occur, the critical competitive advantage is now officially carved in stone as belonging to MS. In every race there is a critical moment when one side fades and another shines - this is that point in the console race.

I know there will be lots of screaming from the Sony fanbois but it matters not. Time will inevitably prove this out.

The Xbox 360 has sold only a little over 1 million across THE WORLD!!!!!!!!! As of March 1st.

I think by the time the PS3 comes out, MS will have 2.5 million Xbox 360's with supplies stocked in store because everyone wants the PS3.

The PS3 is going to have at least 1 million at launch and at least 1 million each month after that.

The Xbox 360 is getting bad publicity every month and the PS3 is only getting good publicity.

In October 2006, 34% of people that wanted to get a next gen system said they wanted an Xbox 360 and 37% said they wanted a PS3.

I think it's now at 30% Xbox 360 and 45% PS3.

I don't know of any one of my friends who still want an Xbox 360. Seven (I only asked seven) of them wanted one when it came out, but now none of them want one.

I don't belive the PS3 will fail when released, this delay just means it is going to be even more anticipated than before. The Playstation 3 has been the most anticipated console since the release of the PS2.

The Cell Processor hasn't been perfected yet, but STI is VERY close to doing so, hence the release of IBM's Beta Blade X Server being ran on a linux supported Cell. Blu-ray on the other hand is and has been having alot of anti-piracy issues, Not the drives and disc's themselves persay, just "Software" issues. Secondly, there is no guarantee they can even make christmas, even if they were faking, until they are completed, that's when they go on sale, they do not sit on units. that just isn't good business. They will get their money back At Christmas regardless of when they released the product during the year. Its actually easier to release products pre-christmas, because they can get an idea of how many will sell, stock the stores, get people interested, so on and so fourth.

They aren't baiting you with one month, then springing it on you for christmas, that's just not how its done. Christmas is one of the worst times to release a new product, because you have so much competition already.. its better (Like Microsoft did) to release the product before the main rush, to introduce the product, because people like to touch it before they buy.. you can't do it when there isn't anything to touch because they are out of stock..

christmas time is good for products people already know, not introducing new products.. Marketing wise, its better to give them at least a couple of months to let the market realize their value.

Awesome news.

In Europe, we were slated to get PS3 in Jan 2007, now it's 3 months earlier. We also have specific details, like the console will have BD-ROM and built in HDD, Linux kit and dual HDMI connector, none of which the ex-box360 fanboys have in their "rushed to market" console..

OK, so it may cost a little more than ex-box360, but then if you want quality, you gotta pay for it.

The delay also means the developers have more time to add polish to the launch titles. You can bet PS3 final units (without Blu-Ray storage) will be in the hands of developers well before launch (if not already)...

Have you seen ex-box 360's "quality" games?

Was in NYC last weekend, and a Game Stop was trying to get rid of used Ex-box360 consoles. One can only assume ALL the current crop of games are as bad as the few I have seen, and owners are bringing their consoles back for refunds. Or perhaps they are consoles that overheated, and MS have refurbished them

Either way, the XB360 lauch has been nothing short of lack-lustre.

Score: 0

|

Whatever you're smoking, share it.

Sony may have a stronger console for hardware, but let's be honest here. Xbox 360 will have the market for a long time, have an established foothold, and what are Sony game publishers going to do?

Publish the same games for the PS3.

How much better is Madden 2008 going to look on a PS3 than a 360? Marginal; at least when I talked to EA's management. Their biggest concern is that the API's of both consoles are so divergent now, it's going to take more effort for them to write multi-platform. Why? Because MS went more PC-style, and Sony switched completely with its anticipated chipset.

All this means for consumers is fewer games on both systems. That bisects the market, and will hurt Sony, since when they come out, you can expect that the 360 will already be lower in cost by $100-250. Also, Sony won't have the Vista home networking connection. Finally, Xbox already has a smooth system with Live. They worked out the centralized "kinks" already. Sony will have to go through that as well, even with lessons learned.

So in comparison, is it "lack-lustre"? Maybe. But everyone will own one. You're going to see it's the upper crust and fanboys who shell out the $$ for PS3. No stopping them, and no sense trying. Just don't expect as many titles. Don't expect to be able to play the dominant HDDVD format.

Just expect that if they offer Linux-based home networking that you'll need to check for a rootkit.

You started a with good points, but you lost all credability, with " Don't expect to be able to play the dominant HDDVD format."

It's virtually accepted that HD-DVD is losing the format war, previously exclusive media studios for HD-DVD have now also signed up for Blu-Ray, but very few Blu-Ray media companis have felt the need to licence HD-DVD. Unless somethin serious happens, it's all over for HD-DVD...

Finally, your assumption about sales of XBox360 between now and Nov are flawed, sales are very slim May - October, in the US and Europe, people have better things to do outside, than sit indoors with a game console! Any lead MS have, will not extend significantly between now and November.

Score: 0

|

HD DVD may lose and I will not argue that. I will, however, argue that Sony will not produce any kind of quality other than low. I am not saying that MS has or will do any better. Sony does have the better video company creating the chips, but I don't feel that Sony will put it together right.

Terminator 2 Extreme edition has it in HD, I hooked it up to my HDTV via the BUILT IN (so its directly from the PC to the TV, no extra cables that lower the quality) VGA to my TV (50" so you figure it be even better for HD). And swaped between the regular DVD and the HD version by simply switching inputs (the set comes with 2 CDs , standard on DVD player, and HD off PC). Unless your going to tell me I hooked it up incorrectly with my blind eyes you won't have me convinced. I didn't see any significant difference, not enough to rush out and buy HD movies when they come out in 2 weeks. Although let me point out that my DVD player up scales to 720p/1080i since its a $ony HDMI player, but then if HDMI is comparable to HD why bother with HD movies? . The new technology is good, but you can't say its jaw droping.

Mark). Whats even funnier about it, is that it states these facts as a positive thing for blu-ray, I don't think an uplink to Sky-Net is a good thing, you decide.

Heres the site.

http://arstechnica.com/n...post/20050810-5194.html

Of particular interest is this "Blu-ray's latest additions in the security department build upon AACS, and give Blu-ray the appearance of being more secure. BD+ is a dynamic encryption scheme that allows for changing encryption schemes midstream."

The midstream changes occur through your link to Sky-Net. Yes, like you said its AACS approved, but this is in ADDITION to AACS standards

Word of advice to any of you taking this blu-crap technology seriously. Do some research on "ROM-Mark" and BD+, and concider twice the lack of privacy to the consumer that it requires. As flanque stated above $ony did the same thing with "rootkit" so look into it as well.

So I'll say it again. PS3 owners are going to get the same PS2 player (after down scaling) if they dont link to Sky-Net and have an HDMI connection to their HDTV (seperate issue that affects both HD DVD and blu-ray).

HAVE FUN!!!
