MS Handheld an iPod and PSP Killer?

Microsoft's own answer to the iPod may not come in the form most people are expecting. According to BetaNews' own sources and those referenced in a Monday article in the San Jose Mercury News, the folks in Redmond may be looking to kill two birds with one stone.
Plans are rumored to be in the works for a device called the XPlayer. This device would combine an Xbox-like gaming device with a multimedia component that would play video and audio. This would mean that in one fell swoop, Microsoft would have a competitor to the PSP, Nintendo DS, and the Apple iPod.
The device would likely make heavy use of Microsoft's upcoming content service, currently code-named "Alexandria." Although sources have provided little in the way of exactly what the application would do, it has been described as a Microsoft version of Apple's iTunes.
Either way, Microsoft has assembled quite the team to work on the project, including some high profile talent from the Xbox 360 team. According to the San Jose Mercury article, J. Allard is heading the project, with Xbox 360 system designer Greg Gibson as director. Xbox financial executive Bryan Lee will handle the business side of the project.
Sources say the project is one of the reasons why Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division was reorganized back in December. Analysts suspected at the time that the reorganization had something to do with a more serious focus on the company's entertainment and device offerings.
"While it could mean any number of things over time, the first take is Microsoft is finally getting serious about where it stands in the market with digital entertainment, especially music and video," commented Jupiter Research vice president Michael Gartenberg said at the time.
Plans for some kind of Xbox handheld have been floated since the original console's launch, but have been repeatedly scrapped. During the planning stages of the 360 three years ago, the idea was again put on the table, but executives decided to pass.
Signs have also pointed to a possible device. Xbox corporate vice president Peter Moore said in January that any "iPod killer" from the company couldn't just be another music device -- and any possible device would likely carry the Xbox name. However he stopped short from saying any type of device existed.
Regardless of whether or not the device is real, the paper said it would be at least 2007 before such a device would appear on the market. This would give Apple, Sony and Nintendo much time to prepare for any eventual release of a Microsoft entertainment device before it is actually launched.

|Eventually, WiMax or WMAN deployments will make it unnecessary to tote around bulky extended storage devices. Your PDA will be able to pull data directly from your home server. That's where we need to push. Forget carrying around terabyte storage crap. If you drop and break it, or lose it, it's gone. Keep you data on a safe device (a server array) and make it accessible anywhere, securely. That's the future. All this iPod, PSP, Origasmi, etc. crap is only babysteps in that direction.

MS is no AT&T of the 1980's. AT&T owned the local serivce, the LD service and there little if any competition. I don't think MS fits into that same mold.

|Microsoft was around at the right time for a new emerging market, they were and are still not by any means great. They work and they are well known, so well known people do not think anyone else exists. As for defeating the ipod. There has been lots of competition but apple's ipod has consistently been the winner, because it is just plain and simply the best product in that market. There are others that are just as good, but then again they lack.

|Everyone has a niche, even Apple. iPod is the new buzzword for mp3 players, but its all media, I would be willing to bet, that Creative has a larger market than iPod for Mp3 players.. you don't hear about them, because the iPod are "cute" and small.
I like Apple, but I don't know if the iPod is the best player. Its cool, it has nice features, and it has a lot of accessories, but for all the buzz surrounding it, its not as good as I feel it should be... but then, I am extremely picky when it comes to MP3 players.
This was the same ideology about the palm pilot.. eventually they died off, now the new thing the "everyone must have gadget" is the iPod... So with all the Palm Pilot killers, its amazing Palm still exists..
Everyone has a niche. There are still people running i386 machines too.. and using typewriters, still prefer convection ovens, and TV with no remote, oh the horror!

OK, you are a little blind or you haven't figured what the term great entails.
A company, that has increased in size 1000 times, in 20 years, is on the fortune 500 list, yet EVERY company on that list use their product, most are a HUGE customer, (and no other company on that list can say that), it created some of the most well known billionaires of all time, 5 of the 10 richest men in the world ARE or WERE MS employees, they dictate to the software, gaming, and business market for products what people will use.. and they influence everyday products.. and you don't think they should be deemed "great"?
You should go work for the Academy, they would love you. You like to pick and choose your own movies and your own categories, because you are not seeing the forrest for the trees.
I am sorry that you don't like MS, its a pity you have to be so jealous as to ignore Microsoft Success and to make yourself feel better, you try to belittle them with your phrase..
Pathetic.

Microsoft has never entertained me, in the sense that I am amused with a game. However, they have amused me with fumbles, BSOD's on the most random devices (Border's Bookstores Kiosks I see all the time,) and various other parlor tricks.
Why 2007? Why should it take so long to bring a product to market? Do you realize Apple will have at least two new generations of products within that timeframe?
So anything being planned now can certainly be out of date by 2007.

Watch NFL. Watch Golf. Watch most sporting events with replay. Those tape machines (yes tape) those are Betamax. They are forgotten by consumers, but Betamax is very much alive and well in the industry. VHS is a toy. Betamax is the real technology.
Maybe you are still stuck on the TI calculator, and think graphing is an innovative function too, huh?
Score: 0
|I'm more plugged into what's going on than I can divulge here. The comment is in regards to how Sony, like MS, likes to force closed technologies on us and claim they own the world. They do not. They tried to force Beta on all of us, and VHS ***CLEARLY*** won out. So what if media backrooms use Betamax. That's a niche market. Betamax may be superior in quality, but it's how Sony blew their ego out of control that hurt them. MS has done the same on the PC end for years. End result: they both suck and I'm only glad to see more competition step into the fold.
And VHS isn't even a toy at this point. DVR, TiVo, are the new toys. Solidstate will catch up and replace them (or extend them) someday. I'd rather play sports than watch them. Watching them is for lazy idiots.
