MS Opens Live Messenger Beta to More
By the Betanews Staff | Published January 5, 2006, 8:40 PM
Microsoft began sending out additional invitations for its Windows Live Messenger client on Thursday, BetaNews has learned. The company had previously closed the test to a few thousand users, who have received only a limited number of additional invites over the past several weeks for friends and family.
"We'd like you to be among the first to try a new beta version of Messenger," the invite reads. "We need your feedback if there's anything that doesn't seem to working right, or that you would like to see done differently." No information has been released as to how many invitations will be sent out during this second phase of the beta test.

Score: 0
|Wait, you were using this a while (which implies you have an approved invite to the program)... and yet you would have to go online and "find it hehehe" ? Something isn't adding up here.
The new audio/video features I am referring to are the new phone call features, and the fact that once again video capabilities have been "improved".
Score: 0
|Alright, here are my first impressions about Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0365 (this will be a rather lengthy list, I'm sure):
The Good News:
1. They have added the ability to "Appear Offline" and still talk to people (a la ICQ). (It's about time!)
2. I really like the "Edit Contact" features... allows you to rename, and otherwise identify your contacts. The best part is that you can add "keywords/notes" to the contact and then use...
3. Especially useful for long contact lists... "Find a contact or number" to search your contact list.
4. It's fast... real fast. 2 seconds for my signins (including the list appearing, which beats my 5 second signins with 7.5.0322).
5. The ads... oh the ads... You know something? The Video Carousel thing isn't so bad. It doesn't automatically play them! It shows you a set of thumbnails that cycle through... along with a "Play Video" link. When you click on it, it streams the video. The good news is that they're actually more like the MSNBC/FoxNews/CNN/CNet videos... not product ads. So those who were concerned about bandwidth... don't be.
6. I like that there is a free anti-virus plugin for those of us that use anti-virus programs that don't already have a Messenger plugin.
7. Shared Folders is a really cool feature. Not really sure how to describe it though besides that it's like local folder sharing in Windows except through Messenger.
8. I haven't tried any of the new video or phone calling options-- no webcam or microphone-- but I really like the idea of it, and the features are available without being obtrusive.
9. Expanded Contacts Details... gives you quick access to the common right-click menu tasks... IM, Email, etc.
The Bad News:
1. The amount of Screen Real-Estate used by the new UI is insane. Everything is big. Really big. I operate a dual-monitor setup (19"LCD running at 1280*1024, and a 15" CRT running at 800*600) and I am really losing a lot of "space" when I have the windows opened up to a point where I feel "comfortable" with using it. Granted, this is a user-perspective issue... people who maximize their windows or only open the main contact list when needed probably won't have as big an issue with it, but even the IM windows are bigger than ever. It's difficult to be happy with having an IM window "Always on Top" when multi-tasking during a conversation.
2. The new icons representing Online, Away/Busy/etc, Appear Offline are awful... they are no longer descriptive at all. They are dark-bold green for Online, light-faint green for Away/Busy/etc, and white for Appear Offline. To quote Mr. Horse on Ren & Stimpy... "No sir, I don't like it!" I definitely like the old status icons better.
3. I want an option to turn off the fracking Search box/buttons... they (moderators pardon the expression please!) piss me off! If I want to do a search, I will open a browser window and go to a search engine of my choice. I don't use an IM client for web search... I use a web browser.
4. The window-paint feature is useless now... it used to be that it would paint the entire window in the color-shade you selected. Now, it only paints the send button and main-window's "Your Status" pane.
5. Shared Folders icon on main window should disappear when Shared Folders function is disabled in options.
6. Main Contact List Window-- I hate how it, by default, shows Hotmail contacts... and I hope it's just a bug, but it also showed all the contacts I've deleted and blocked until I selected the "Filter List to Show only My Messenger Contacts" option. I would prefer the list be filtered by default.
7. Display Pictures has two sizes-- Small and Medium, despite the fact that Medium looks "large" to me. Perhaps the three sizes and adjusting Medium to in the middle like it's expected would be better.
8. With such a large interface, tabbed conversations would be greatly welcomed but are still missing. *Sigh* I suppose I should contact Patchou for the Messenger Plus! beta.
9. Expanded Contacts Details... I prefer the option of either showing details all the time or not showing them... not the auto-details option that is on by default. Thankfully, it can be turned off.
Bottom Line-- Worth upgrading? Maybe if you like/want/need the new Audio/Video features... or if you have a LOT of contacts and need the new list management features... but otherwise, probably not worth it yet. I'm going to revert back to 7.5.0322.

|Thank you for this informative analysis. I would like to try this service as I am a windows messenger user. Do you, or anyone, have an invite for me? I have been pretty excited about this program from the beginning and don't really care that there might be a fee involved. I have like the Messenger program from the beginning. In spite of the negatives, it still sounds great and sounds like MS is still changing aspects as it progresses.
Is the size really noticeable at higher resolutions? I have mine set to 1280x1024. does it look the same?
Thanks.
Score: 0
|Sorry, but I just got accepted yesterday and do not have any to give.
Score: 0
|The size issue...out of curiosity:
Is this with the Windows XP UI enabled, or using the classic Windows UI? Is there a noticable difference between the two with this app? (Does it obey the current theme settings and not use it's own?)
Know you're busy. Hope you have the time...I sure as hell don't. :)
Score: 0
|I keep Windows in Classic mode... Themes are disabled. So that aspect is not the issue... Look at MSN Messenger 7.5 in Classic, and then just picture what's inside the Windows frame to be bigger. :)
Score: 0
|In that case, I think I'll pass.
Thanks for the info.
Score: 0
|In regards to the resolution issues... I also run at 1280*1024 on my primary monitor (19" LCD). The minimum window size for MSN Messenger 7.5.0322 that allows me to see my **13-person** contact list without scrollbars appearing is 3" wide by 6" tall (give or take a few pixels). That same list in Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0365 is 4" wide by 11" tall (give or take a few pixels).
All of the "small" icons for the contact list are at a medium size between 7.5's small and large icons. I didn't even try the "large icons" setting!
Maybe it's anal-retentive and abusrd of me to put so much focus and complaint into the size of the UI, but I prefer things that are compact and allow me to maximize how much I can put on my screen at once... not things that maximize how much they, individually, put on my screen.

|I agree 100%.
But it appears to be the way MS is headed. Clutter, clutter, and bubble-graphics. All it takes is one look at the next version of office and I shudder at what the future holds.
This Windows Live UI candy is just icing on the cake.
Score: 0
|Actually, the new Office 12 UI looks damn good to me... I watched the 40-minute demmo video with the project rep a while back, and I was really impressed. The difference, however, is that the space used is used functionally rather than just for the sake of eye-candy. I also, generally, like the Vista UI, although I know there will be things I will turn off with it.
Score: 0
|I have been using Office 12 for the past couple of weeks.....i really don't like the new interface at all. The toolbars takes way too much space. I've been using Office since the beginning and now i have to re-adapt to a brand new UI....not easy. At the least, if it was worth it.....it isn't....not much new ( toolbars and buttons available). The rest is OK.

|Glad to hear your feedback... out of curiosity, what monitor size and resolution do you work with?
I don't mind learning the new interface... again, based on what I saw, I enjoy the changes, since from what I saw they seemed intuitive... and I certainly like the dynamic previews. Hopefully my opinion won't change when I sit down at the helm with it.

|Well, I finally got an invite and I have to say I don't think it's that big of a deal.
It looks better, has offline messaging, and you can rename your contacts. Oh, it also has timestamps that you can turn on and off.
I guess all in all it's pretty good, but I guess I expected more because it's been so hyped up.
Do I think it's worth upgrading to? Yes.
Was it worth all the invite hype? No.
Hopefully they will improve on this further before releasing it to the public.
Right now it's using 32MB of RAM. Not bad.
Lastly, the video carousel thing is fine. Some of the video's that come up are actually kind of cool. Plus they don't play unless you click on 'em.
