MSN, AP Launch Video Network

Microsoft and the Associated Press launched on Wednesday the AP Online Video Network, a new service powered by MSN Video that will make the newswire's footage available to the websites of its members. The service would be free to users and supported through ads that play before the news clips.

Details of the project were first announced in November, when the two companies introduced a beta version of the player.

The AP will retain full editorial control over the content. Video will be streamed in Windows Media format and MSN will also develop targeted advertising for local AP affiliates, the companies said.

Around 40 clips would be available daily on a variety of subjects, including national, international, technology, business and entertainment. The AP also said it planned to air clips from its coverage of the Academy Awards this week.

"This video initiative with MSN is an example of the type of targeted solutions AP is committed to providing its members to compete successfully on the Web in a crowded marketplace," AP president and CEO Tom Curley said.

Previously, MSN Video only provided its services within the MSN network. The AP deal marks the first time that the player technology would be syndicated outside of the network, Microsoft said.

MSN will continue to use MSNBC.com as its video news content partner despite the new AP deal.
