Mac OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard' makes a video appearance
By Tim Conneally | Published December 29, 2008, 1:34 PM
Screenshots and user-uploaded videos of OS X 10.6 (aka Snow Leopard) have been popping up as the first quarter of 2009 inches ever closer.
During WWDC last June, Apple's Jordan Hubbard gave a presentation which included a slide saying that Snow Leopard was slated for a Q1 2009 release. The OS update is comprised mainly of un-flashy improvements that are geared toward increased performance and optimization of the new hardware architecture of the latest Macs.
German blog Sevenmac.de received videos and screenshots of 10.6, which include the developer preview of Safari 4 in use, and the Exchange-compatible address book. Again, there's nothing dramatically different about Snow Leopard on the surface, other than the activity monitor showing a handful of 64-bit plug-ins running.
Snow Leopard is expected to appear at Macworld 2009.
Windows 7 watch out, Snow leopard's 64-bit kernel will blow your useless and unstable kernel away. Too bad Windows has so little market share despite that there are more hackers for Windows because OS X is untouchable by hackers that's why it's impossible to write viruses for Mac OS X. Snow Leopard will make gaming a heaven which got much better in leopard and with Snow Leopard it will be the best platform for gaming eliminating the need for Windows and we all know gaming really sucks in Windows. Snow Leopard will make Steve Jobs the richest man in the world and Windows 7 will make Steve Ballmer the poorest man in the world. No wonder, Apple have more money than Microsoft. The guys at Microsoft have really made so much progress for Windows 7 since now it's more bloated, slower, more incompatibility problems and requires much more RAM to run. That's great. That's what Windows is all about. On the other had Mac OS X Snow Leopard will be more robust, fast and will be packed with innovative features. That's why I prefer Mac. It's simply the best.

|I was strictly a windows user, I recently purchased a mac book pro that was just released, and I have to say, apple has done it right with mac os x leapard.
It's simple, it has firefox and with apps like vmware fusion I can run windows based apps right along side of mac os.
I didn't understand before what the big deal was with macbook pro's mac os x etc. But after spending 40 hours a week for 5 weeks now, I have a hard time going back to windows, I want to click the left side to close out windows etc.
The macbook pro is quite simply the best all around laptop i've ever used. I've owned probably a dozen or so laptop over the last 8 years. hp's dell's etc. The simple, stylish and speed of it all is just great. I have never been so content and happy spending 2k on a laptop. With vmware fusion and windows xp running within mac os, there is no compromise.
I would suggest and recommend any windows fanboy, sped a good 10 hours on a macbook pro, get used to the layout, features, and details of mac os, and I bet you will have a change of heart from the bash fest you all have. I did the same thing before, I have to admit, I am interested in getting a imac to replace my windows desktop, now if they could just get the high end video cards and game situation under control. The word Microsoft unless it's work related woldn't come out of my mouth again.

|Unfortunately, I have done just what you requested, several times.
I have a G5 at home, sitting in the garage now (after going back to the Apple Store 3 times to have an overheating issue "fixed"), and I gave a used iBook to my son which now sits on his shelf in favor of Mom or Dad's Laptop.
We have 3 MacBook Pros in our office, as well as a brand new Mac workstation (looks just like my G5 at home, but actually seems to work).
I have worked with all of them. I still prefer getting my actual work done in Windows. Granted, we're using parallels, not fusion, but I can';t imagine the difference to be really all that great (F5 and a mouse click to switch from OS X desktop to Windows desktop is pretty simple stuff).
At first, I was impressed, but the more I work with them, the more I find myself sticking to the windows side. I will admit it is useful for occasionally going to the Mac side for an app or utility that may be Mac only (or be an app we use solely for design on the Mac).
Now, for our employees that *use* these systems, it's invaluable. They need OS X to run various applications we use for design and the ability to switch from those to Windows (for our other business apps that do not have a Mac equivalent) is much needed.
Of course, they look at it as, "If we just had these business apps available for Mac, we wouldn't need windows." While I see it as, "If they just had these Mac apps working better in Windows, we wouldn't need the overpriced MacBook Pro's."
*shrug*
It's all about perception, needs, and what works best for you.

|I can vouch for every word you have spoken/written. I switched to a Mac in October of 2007. I quickly learned what all the fuss was about. There's absolutely no going back to Windows for me. A Mac is the only way to go. I have Parallels 4.0 to run those occasional Windows only apps but spend most of my time on the Mac side of course. It really is true, "Once you go Mac, you'll never go back." :)

From my limited perspective, I would say the trend, going forward, is a gradual merging of all operating systems so that the same hardware can run each parallel with the other. I know that this has already started but I think the pace will pick up. I also think the browsers will merge in similarity and design as the Web changes and becomes more uniform.
Just my humble opinion and, yes, I have my flame retardant suit so let the pitchforks and torches come.

I used to use it to use office 2008 but after using iWork, only to realize another innovation from Apple which is much more better than another resource hog, useless and unstable-Microsoft office 2008, I have permanently stopped using it because once you use any Apple products, there's no going back because no one just use it once.

|I've tried to like Mac OS X a few times spending about 5 minutes each time and it is just annoying. I have tried playing around with it and one thing I hate is the slow mouse acceleration + the global menu bar. Using system preferences I have tried changing the mouse pointer speed setting it to the max but it is still too slow. My hand gets tired rubbing the mouse trying to move the pointer. Another thing is the global menu bar. I hate it. Also not having text next to icons on the dock can be a bit tricky. Sure it looks nice and better than Vista in my own opinion but I just don't see my self using Mac OS X any time soon. I am used to Windows and Linux.
P.S. Why does everything have to start with an "i" on that dock seriosly. This is my "iComment" :)

But you know when you get used to it, you may find you actually like it a lot better, its easier to use, the attention to detail is second to none, and you find, less is more.

Instead of "bleeding" edge features that are mostly unwanted, unuseful bug-ridden bloat (Vista comes to mind) in the race to attract people to your product with smoke and mirrors, Apple has chosen to use its developer resources to take the time to transition a beautiful, feature rich and highly functional OS into a top notch, super rock solid, performance tuned, high octane 64-bit OS running from a "modern" API (win32 = > 15 years old).
Much better than insulting our intelligence with perfumey (wh)orey unoptimized dope-ware (Vista).

Windows 7 and Snow Leopard will be nothing alike. Windows 7 is Microsoft's way of cleaning up Vista to a limited degree. Unlike Snow Leopard, Windows 7 will not offer a major performance boost over Vista SP2.
Snow Leopard's performance over Leopard will be significant and will blow the Windows 7 rip out of the water. All of Windows 7 "original" features are already available in Leopard.

There is already a major performance boost over Vista SP2. Just look at the resource usage on a netbook running Win7 compared to Vista on any PC.
Just because you can "do" the same things doesn't mean that they are done better or are even the same. Windows has had a taskbar for almost 15 years. If you didn't know they even had a dock like bar as far back as Windows 1 but got rid of it in v2.
