Metallica Web Site Vandalized
By Nate Mook | Published April 14, 2000, 3:00 PM
Fueling the fire in the heated battle between Metallica and MP3 fans worldwide, Metallica's Web site was hacked early this morning. Visitors to the band's site today encountered a simple yet omninous message: "LEAVE NAPSTER ALONE." Metallica filed suit against Napster yesterday, and promised to add anyone else found illegally trading their music to the list of defendants. Read more about the suit on BetaNews.
Metallica is a bunch of old washed up 'musicians' from the 80's that don't know when to quit. The combined age of their band has gotta be in the thousands. This whole deal is just that whole thing with the senior citizens not accepting new technology. Metallica is afraid of mp3s so they are gonna sue people over it.
I'm bored... guess I'll go upload some metallica mp3s.

|Oh yeah, to buddy who said Napster isn't that good. That's BS! I've been into mp3s ever since they came out, and I remember the old FTP days. Napster is great for people who know next to nothing bout coms. With FTP's, you get all kinds of crap, like RATIO, banners, stingy sysadmin's, etc. And you don't just find 'kiddie' songs on Napster. I've found acoustic, alternative, rap, punk, techno, country, dance, etc with it. So, next time don't post your unintellegent comments, until you've completed grade 2. Also, mp3s are useful because if I wanna know if an album is worth buying, that's how I find out. I download a few songs & check it out. Example, Bad Religion is going to be releasing an album May 9th, but I already got it via the net. And it's good, so as soon as it comes out OFFICIALLY, I'll be getting it. Mp3s are one of the greatest things bout coms...

|Now, I'm not going to say Metallica sucks. Just because I only like a FEW of their songs, doesn't mean their a bad band, but what they're doing is ridiculous! This is almost as bad as that AOL case! People suing AOL, cause you can send files thru it to people. So they going to come after ICQ next? Bullet Proof FTP? Serv-U FTP? etc etc etc
I think it's time to make a new program called Mapster or Lopster that does the exact same thing as Napster, just to piss off Metallica some more. And those who do know how to hack, good job on that "Leave Napster alone!" on Metallica's homepage. Those students who programmed Napster made it with good intentions, and now these rich S.O.B.'s are going to sue them for everything they have??? While they have so much money, they don't know what to do with it??? Besides, some small bands are getting their names known by mp3s, so keep that in mind. Anyhow, Metallica, you just lost all my respect, and the respect of a lot of my friends too - who USE to think highly of you. Later.

|so what you all are saying is how bad metallica sucks.
Most of the original fans have known this since "The Black Album" came out. Hmm.. Bob Rock's first Metallica Production. Sure, Fleming Rassmussen did some s***ty studio work, but t least it was still Metallica.
ANYWAY, Metallica sues colleges and fans and napster. So? Are they gonna sue WARFTP and BulletproofFTP?
Guys, Napster kinda sucks anyway. Sure, I used it briefly, and it's good if you wanna hear radio pop and top 40 teenie-bopper stuff, but come on!! If you seriously wanna hear that stuff, borrow it from the kid at school that has it, and rip it ya own damned self.
Now if you want GOOD music, use an ftp program, and search for what you want. You know, good stuff like Type O Negative, Therion, Cradle Of Filth... Metallica has sold out, and what remains is blackened. Blackened is the end. Color our world blackened... sorry. I know I got off on a tangent..
This is Metallica's weak attempt at world headlines. Ever since they got out showed in Montreal by Guns and Roses... (extinguishes the flames)
You know what I was thinking, you know how James Hetfield got the name from a friend who was starting a music magazine in LA? How the guy was gonna use the name Metallica for his music magazine? What if after these years, and since it's a well known fact that James Hetfield ripped this guy off, this guy was to sue for lost income.. Imagine how much money Metallica the music magazine could have made..
Why don't we as a internet entity find this guy and get him to sue? Down with Metallica! Long live .. uh.. anything but metallica!!!
*disclaimer* I don't agree with piracy, but I will say this: I have no intention to buy any cd's this month, because I cannot afford to. (still paying of my car stereo) I am, however, sitting on a stockpile of blank 80 minute cd's, and I plan to record some music to listen to on my in-dash. Now, since I don't have the money to buy the cd's the record companies are _not_ losing out on my money, since I do not physically or virtually have it to spend. Therefore, since there is no loss of fudage on their end, they should just shut the fork up!
Did anyone wonder why Sony Electronics is billing every new in-dash cd player they make as "cd-r compatible"? Aren't they a member of the RIAA? Now, I'm glad as hell they do this, since JVC's in-dash units cough and spit when I pop in a cdr, but isn't this like encouraging people to steal from you?
Metallica's cd's (and yes, everyone else's) make pretty sparks when you microwave them for 30 seconds!!!
Three cheers to Pantera for not selling out!

|That means all those burglars, thieves, embezzlers are innocent! Let them free I tells ya. They didn't have any money to begin with to pay for the things they stole so you aren't really losing out and they really didn't steal anything.
Don't know about you, but I'm sure all those bands you mentioned don't want your kind of "word of mouth" piracy advertising.

|I am a dedicated Metallica fan and have been since the beginning. I bought their last few albums and I think they are excellent. Their music has evolved and their talent has improved greatly, so much so in fact that the SF Symphony Orchestra ASKED to perform with them. What you should have stated was, "in my humble opinion..." before you started saying Metallica sucks.

|They have enough money already? Who gives a flying **** how much money htey have, this is NOT the issue. Theft of their property is the issue. What if your boss came into your office one day (or stoiod next to you at the fry cooker as the case may be) and said "I think you've made enough money this week. AS I see it you can pay rent, bills, buy groceries and a couple six packs. You still have to work the other 15 hours this week and any overtime I want you to put in you will not be compensated for." This is what you are asking musicians to do. You guys have enough money already but I want you to still cover the costs of renting studio space, hiring graphic designers to design album covers, covering the costs of producing a couple videos and paying the produciton crews for your world tour. We might give you a hand on the tour since we don't mind so much paying for tickets, but Ticket Master screws us big time so I'm not too sure about this one.
Do you realize how stupid you soind when you say "you guys have enough money already?" or do you just not care that you are an ignorant moron?

|*Shaking his head*
What exactly is Metallica hoping to achieve by suing naptser? The MP3 community has grown way too big to be able to be controlled by anyone including governments. Encoders, decoders, CD burners, CD burner software, internet access, programs such as napster, ftp sites, web sites, trading servers, I mean jesus, you can no possibly stop it anymore.
Instead of thinking how to FIGHT against the community they should be thinking about how to WORK with it. MP3s can be used to promote music. For example, when I hear a song which I find extremely good, I go to the shop and buy the entire album. Sure I could just as well download the album off the internet and burn myself a copy of it on CD, but I buy the original CD in respect of the artist who made the song.
This is not a question of economics or law, it's a question of respect. I'm a music artist myself. If I ever got into actually selling albums, of course I would expect to make money out of it knowing that I worked my a** off to produce the music. If I would hear that my CDs are not selling, but are being spread throughout the internet of course I would be pissed off but at least I wouldn't go after the entire MP3 community and start suing every ****ing person who owns MP3s, not to mention ISPs and colleges (what the **** was that all about?!).
Instead, I would think of other ways to make money with my music. Concerts for example is a legendary way to make enormous amounts of money. Shows, radio, music television ...
Look. What I'm simply saying is that if you find a good song and like it, buy the album. If not for you then at least in RESPECT of the person who actually made the song FOR you.
MP3s are good. Just don't abuse them and show a little gratitude for all those artists out there who are working their asses off to produce a form of entertainment without which life would feel empty.
Peace, a+

|Well, I think I'll go down to my local music store and buy myself another Metallica album, sit down and listen to it - and then laugh my bloody a** off, because of those who have no respect for other people's work, but just think they should have every little thing for free - not free as in "freedom of speech", but free as in "free beer".
How would you react, if you made something, which you could sell, and then somebody stole it from you and sold it right in front of your nose? I'd be pissed off!
Perhaps Napster does not intend to be the reason for MP3 downloads, but they had to be aware of the bloody risk! They CAN be convicted as taking part in crime, as well as the one who drives bank robbers from the bank, although he did not take part in the robbery!
In Denmark a 17-year old guy was sued for linking to web-pages with MP3's - he is not yet convicted, but everything indicates that he will have to pay 1000 of $ because of it.

|as a musician myself, i feel the need to explain something. The majority of bands, both in the united states and elsewhere do not make much of a profit *at all* by selling recorded media. Most of the profits come from live performances or tours, and the bands out there that are making a decent profit from their albums are the ones that are selling hundreds of thousands of them anyway, these bands, like Metallicrap are making enough money off of their album sales to live without ever having to worry about their 'career' outside of music. To quote something from arstechnica.com, this band is simply the first to show that, to them, Nothing Else Matters (except money). I sincerely hope that this stunt of theirs costs them far more than the mp3 community every could.

|Anyone here who would condeme someone (like me) for pirating mp3's is a retard! Why should I go out to to a store and pay $20 for a stupid CD I only want to hear one song on when I can turn on my computer, and have the exact same song downloaded almost instantly, with track info and other goodies, for FREE!!!! The music industry needs a good kick in the ass.. why don't they understand it's all about value added. If they can offer something sigificalntly better and more convenient (whatever that would intale.. posibly with music videos, bandinfo, etc...) and sell it at a reasonable price (10-20 cents per song).. there really wouldn't be any need for record companies.. either artists can sell their own stuff or there could be some sort of clearing house like mp3.com) I'm sure they'd have this mp3 thing beat in no time. Sure, there will always be the dedicated few whowill go to great length to save a few buks (look at the people who download illegal moviez! as huge and poor quality as they are)... but for the mainstream (as napster has made mp3) I'm sure it would make a big diff...
Also, recently metalica was starting to grow on me (that SF ocastra thing was awsome!) but not anymore.. I emean.. how much money do they need? I don't see how they could have much less moey tha the Beastie Boys.. and they do everything in their power to GIVE thsi stuff away to their fans.. plus they do wha they cna for charity (remember that thing where MS gave money to charity when you downloaded beastie songs in windows media? that was cool!!!)

|10-20 cents per song?
PER SONG???? OMG. If you break down the actual cost of a CD, the band only get's like a buck 50 right now.
So you want them to be paid per song. Sheesh - That's the end of Rock N' Roll as we know it.
Thanks - thanks a lot.

Don't know about you, but out of my collection of 200+ legal audio CD's, I'm sure I didn't prize everyone of them (although they are classical, big band, singers & standards, and just a few more modern artists).
So let's see, you are arguing for getting any and all things free; cable, satellite, electricity, water, food, clothing, video games, pc games, electronics, jewelry, shoes,...etc., and of course music. Anything that can be stolen should be within your right? Ah, justice for all.

|Now you should wake up ... Napster doesn't do anything illegal ... unless you consider coding programs illegal ... maybe metallica should sue microsoft for coding an OS ... 'cause any OS allows ppl to use computers and connect to networks and thus share files and illegally copy Metallica's music ... and they should sue car manufacturers for allow ppl to move media with illegal music ... I understand suing individuals that do something illegal ... but that's not the coders of Napster ...

|I think you need to do the waking up. I have only two words for you. BRAINWASHED FOOL!
Score: 0
|Oh yeah, this argument again. Makes a whole lot of sense. (????)
Gimme a break - you have to look at intended use. Cars are primarily NOT used for illegal purposes. OS's are primarily NOT used to facilitate piracy. Cisco did not invent and develop their routers with the intention of their primary use to be shuttling illegally distributed copyrighted material. In fact, none of those are specifically intended to do either one.
Without having specific numbers, it is fairly obvious that Napster's primary use is for the illegal distribution and sharing of copyrighted material. Whether that was Napster's intention is one thing, I would go so far as to claim that was its *intended* use. Now, that's my opinion and unlike so many other opinions in these posts, I will freely classify it as such.
I think the real problem is that the digital music boom hasn't gotten the attention of the recording industry and therefore the existence of Napster comes out of necessity. The recording industry should have figured out a way to cash in on this a long time ago. I would have no problem spending $1-$2 per copyrighted MP3. Why isn't that available to me yet?? RIAA and artists have a right to pursue legal action but in the interest of integrity, I say quit yer cryin' until you provide a real solution to the consumer.
Score: 0
|I think that your argument is flawed, where is it said that this software was written primarialy for illegal activity? Is there some readme file that says "Please don't distribute any material that you have leagally"? I dare say that you have you head up your a** if you think it's fair enough to assume what KIND of use was intended when the software was written.
If you wrote a peice of software that enabled users to transfer images only, ie jpgs, tiff etc in order that people be able to share their own artisitc compositions why should you be help accountable if teenagers used it to transfer porn? It's ridiculous.
Metallica is making a grab for the cash as a front for the riaa to trample napster into the ground, this will set a precedent and once this is done there will be no software to do this because no-one will write it.
I think that Metallica SHOULD persue the people who are illegally distributing their "ART" but Napster and the Universities are merely included for their cash value.
