Microsoft Corrects CD Burning Flaw in XP
By Nate Mook | Published April 5, 2002, 6:32 AM
Microsoft on Thursday posted a patch to correct problems that can occur when burning CDs under Windows XP. When copying files or folders to a recordable compact disc, the CD can become unreadable and individual files are sometimes lost. Occasionally, the disc will work fine under XP, but not older versions of Windows or external CD players.
Microsoft recommends Windows XP users install the patch and is expected to post it on Windows Update next week. The patch is currently available at Microsoft's Download Center. More information on the flaw and possibly symptoms may be found at support.microsoft.com.
I have had many problems in the past with RW CDs in windows XP, being unable to wipe them or write on them a second time. Have other peopl had this problem? I hope this patch will sort it out.
As for Easy CD Creator I have used this without any problems to date.

|I wonder, for those of you that have had EZ Cd Creator 5 "hose their XP system", what the actual problem is? I have been using Roxio's 5.0 Platinum with XP on my system since RC1 of XP pro. I started with a Toshiba 4x4x24 burner that was also a DVD player. I am up to the Pacific Digital USB 2.0 burner, and loving it. I have had NO problems with burning under Roxio. The only time I had trouble burning at all was some burner software did not see my burner/dvd combo drive.
So, what kind of motherboard was used? I have been running Biostar boards in my system since RC1, with the VIA chipset. I am really interested in why all the problems from most of the posters on this article.

|I build using the Via,Alimagic,AMD and Intel chipsets. No problems with any present Roxio products, or XP instabilities. I use Asus and Gigabyte and the occasional Iwill boards, depending on the price of the computer. In fact I seldom run into any of the problems people say that Windows must have. My machines run right next to Macs and they go down no more often than the Macs do (actually quite a bit less, tho I have no idea why given MS horrible rep).

|Personally i think that the only problem is Microsoft picking Roxio/Adaptec as the "plugin" creators, if they had picked ahead Nero then i doubt there would be any problems at all! I dont htink Microsoft did any home work!!

|Why doesn't Microsoft finally allow for uninstall of 'integrated' features. That way we could forgo the mess with uninstall of Adaptec Engine products.
Score: 0
|Because they are 'integrated'.
If they were 'addon' features then they should have an uninstall option.

|Kind of like the second p2p network is integrated into Kazaa? It's not integrated, it's bundled without an uninstaller.
Score: 0
|You're right, it's not integrated, but it does come with an uninstaller (not a brilliant uninstaller by any measure, but there's an uninstaller). Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. It's called 'b3d Projector' from memory. Note that afterwards you still need to go to X:\Windows\BDE and run bdeclean.exe or something like that to finish the uninstall procedure... i.e. the uninstaller doesn't completely uninstall, but it definetely comes with an uninstaller.

|regedit and del do the same job. ;-)
Score: 0
|Oh obviously. But the point was that since it was an 'addon' feature then it should have come with an uninstaller (which it did) as oppose to an 'integrated' feature. Then again I am suprised that it did come with an uninstaller, after all, if you're going to all the effort of hiding the existance of your program in the first place, why show it in the list of installed applications!

|That is what they will be doing from now on starting with XP SP1. Microsoft will give you the option to install IE, WMP, etc.

|I too had some trouble with the built in burning software in XP. I must say that altho I missed the original fiasco with Roxio and XP,and can't comment on that (I waited til the dust settled before putting my customers in XP), I am at a loss as to what everybody is talking about concerning the horrible errors in Roxio (or Adaptec) software. I have never made a coaster in any version of Adaptec, nor have any of my customers on any computer I have built for them. I wish I could say that it was due to my (patented) Superior Construction and Tuning Techniques, but we all know that would be bull.
I am running Roxio 5xx on several XP machines and they burn discs that are readable everywear and with no problems whatsoever. I did have problems with Nero Burn tho, it would not work except in administrator mode and was,for me and most of my customers,a pain to use (a couple prefered Nero). Yes,for copying, Clone CD rules. Isn't the computer world wonderfully messy?

|Nero had that problem of only working as Admin right when 2k came out. (and something similar when Xp appeared) They have since fixed it. It should be noted that the versions that had that issue didn't officially work in 2k or xp at the time either.

|In my case the last time I tried it was last week with the latest version of Nero Burn on XP Pro. I loaded Roxio 5xx and everything worked perfectly and no fuss (got to admit that I hate the new interface,so much chrome that it is hard to see what you are doing. I wish they had left it alone). Heh, maybe the thing is to load Nero to kill the on-board burner software, then load Roxio? :) In all walks of life I have seen this phenomenom; one part of the country a certain brand (of whatever) just sucks, but it works perfectly elswhere. Happens in industry too.

|After installing XP Pro, I had nothing but trouble with Roxio and the internal XP burning software. After installing Nero, no problems, no coasters and it uses a whole lot less resources than Roxio.

|Speaking of cd-rw and xp.. I have been using my hp 8200i with east cd 5.02c for a while now with no problems. Yesterday I bought a TDK VeloCD 32/10/40, it causes my PC to lock up and unlock and lock, over and over until I reboot, event viewer says "The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period.", its set up as slave on IDE2 to my master DVD drive, and running in DMA mode. First 2 times this happened was with EASY CD open, but 3rd time was just after rebooting, so I put my HP back. Also XP didnt give any recording options for this drive, even after removing and reinstalling the CD Writer Update. Anyone have experiance with this drive and XP?

|I have a similar problem with xp. I bought a TDK VeloCD 24/10/32 and it would go crazy when ever I tried to burn a cd. It had to do with how it was installed. I had it hooked up to a controller card. After much playing I now have the CD-RW hooked up to IDE channel one, a second harddrive on the controller card, the dvd drive on IDE channel two and now things work ok.

|I picked it up off the web when it was free from Sony. (It was actually a free update, but it didn't check for older version, oops!)
I use it as often as possible because it is a great program and I haven't had a single problem with it yet.

|I was starting to think it was just me. My burner always worked fine before, but I was burning CD's that only be read on my PC. I wonder if this is part of why they pulled the Power Tools as well? I hope that comes back now too, the ISO burner was a nice touch...

|Every aspect of CD Burning in XP has worked for me other than CD to CD copying. Although this is part of the Power Toys package and unsupported by Microsoft, it would be nice to have this functionality without ripping files to my hard drive every time I want to copy a CD.

|Are you only using the licensed burner software that came with XP? IF so, you might want to check out getting either Roxio's Easy Cd Creator 5 and download the updates (the burner software in XP is a specially made, licensed version of Roxio's Direct CD, which I never liked) or get the latest Nero. I haven't had any problems with either burner I have used on XP using Easy CD Creator. The one I am using now is a Pacific Digital USB 2.0 external burner, and no problems with it on XP.

|I agree with fewt 100% I've had this argument for years. Let me post you what i posted just an hour ago infact.
I've tried nearly every burning program known to man.
Easy CD has got the be the worst burning app ever made to man, i've never seen so many coasters in my life, on my pc, and 4 other of my friends.
It's a good program when it acturally works i suppose, which only a handful of pcs it's happy with.
I've been using the latest versions of Nero and CloneCD as a partnership for all my burning needs for over a year now.
Nothings come close to beating them, i use Nero for burning data cds such as backuping up my HD, and Music CDS.
And i use CloneCD for copying exact cd copys, works a charm.

|When XP was released, I took my nice $99.95 copy of Roxio Easy CD Creator Platnium, and installed it. Not only did it NOT burn CDs, their beautiful little nav menu not work, it put me into this continual BSOD and forced me to format. I have since purchased Nero and never had another problem.
Roxio also hosed the built in burning ability also, (even after an uninstall through safe mode) but Nero doesn't seem to touch it.

|It is so wierd, people had problems with older Roxio's (when it was Adaptec) and Win2k, and Roxio 5 and XP, but I've just flat out never had the difficulties, although, I've only had it on one machine... so that just may be the case of that machine only.
Really wierd.
