Microsoft Developing 'Start Page' and 'Start Panel'
By Nate Mook | Published July 19, 2000, 8:45 PM
Microsoft has been working on 'Start Panel' and 'Start Page' ehancements for Windows Whistler, seemingly consiting of a new Start Menu and Active Desktop respectively. Showcasing Microsoft's move towards a Web-based desktop, the changes can be seen in the latest version of the upcoming operating system, sent to a select group of testers last week.
Discovered earlier today by Paul Thurrott, the new Start Panel offers simplified navigation to common tasks via a DHTML interface. Still buggy and thus hidden from normal use, it contains all standard Start Menu options in a two-pane view.
The Start Page Active Desktop gives the user easy access to recently used programs and documents, as well as the Internet, e-mail, and search functions. Still incomplete, the Start Page desktop will allow an OEM such as Dell to brand a computer and each user to have their own photo when logged on. The desktop acts as an expanded version of the new Start Panel and will be customized on a per-user basis.

Knowing Microsoft, the Start Page and Start Panel may be scrapped before final release, but they demonstrate the company's shift towards a fully Web-ified operating system.
Whistler is the codename for Microsoft's upcoming operating system, currently dubbed Windows .NET, and is slated for release Q3 2001.
Come on guys, does this deserve to be the headline now for a week, how about positing "MS Still holding up Windows 2000 andmins with lies about service pack one".. still for release on the 24'th right?
Come on BetaNews, you're losin it.

i don't have Whistler rite now cuz i'm not a beta tester and i don't intend to download it until a release candidate comes out or a later beta or when some pro-linux / pro-macintosh guy falls in love with it
which they probably wont.
the point is that i looked at the screenshots and i'm hoping they're not done with the User Interface
everyone here is goin crazy over this new UI, as much as i hate to say this, you guyz gotta check the Mac OS X screenshots, now that's a nice UI although it kinda looks ... well ... femalish
anyway, heres my point, i really like the new UI but i'm thinkin they should ditch the whole idea of making it look like win2k.
i like the new radio buttons and check boxes you see in the new UI but they gotta do something about the ICONS, they have got to go. They need new higher quality icons (not too big), have ANOTHER view where you can have an "animated" dock and what not.
Actually forget what i just said, they should make the THEMES section really customizable... here's what they should do...
1. allow developers to change the usual things you'd change with Stardock Windows Blinds
2. allow theme makers to change the look of the login screen
3. change menus and completely customize the UI FULLY
Microsoft should an extra theme themselves which makes it animated like the MAC OS X, the icons way better quality and change the user interface way more high quality clear, menus should be slightely transparent, and a few high quality features you see in the Mac OSX
now BEFORE YOU START USING @#%#$ at me and the @#$(# and the *#$)# and the #*#$ Microsoft should make this an option to install if you want, a window should pop up asking you if you want to install this option as it will take up disk space and run slowly on slower computers but are enhanced for certain processors yaddi yaddi yadda
tell me what ya think, oh ya and that guy who said
"I like cheese."
is the man.

|An extremely early alpha or even pre-alpha of Chicago (Win95) that I tried. Things sure have changed since then :) It was quite a while ago, but ISTR the desktop wasn't there (or was broken) and there was only an explorer view of the start menu. It was the buggiest thing I ever saw and it hardly worked on anything :) It was less compatible with varying hardware than BeOS... hehe
From what I hear, Whistler is at a similar stage - therefore I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole just yet! Win2K works just fine.

|Well, I'm suprised how many stupid people post about asking where Whistler is... How about you look around this page, as it contains I don't know how many working links to Whistler...
As for you Microsoft bashers: Whistler rocks and is rock-stable.
All of you complaining probably have crappy low-end systems... Heck, Whistler installed in 30 minutes! That's compared to the 2 hours + it takes to get Win2k running. Plus, it boots faster, hibernates faster, and runs faster. And it's stable - not a single crash for me, and I've been running it for days.
Yes, it takes forever to shut down and suspend, but that will be fixed. Also uses 128 MB of RAM when idle and has a lot of debugging apps and code... But for a developer preview, this is one heck of an OS. So stop complaining, download Whistler, get a 7200 RPM drive and shut up.
Score: 0
|You're one of the lucky few. For a lot of us, Whistler won't even install -- it conks out with a KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED STOP error. 2 out of the 3 systems I tested Whistler on had this problem (each had vastly different configs).
And for me, the time it takes to install and boot is almost identical to Win2k. I think you're imagining things.

|Well copland, i think you are really wrong here with you comments about whistler. I have downloaded the pre-beta and installed it without any problem. Booting time takes at lease twice as long as Win2K Pro. The damn thing pops up numerous application logs as it regularly dies - this log generation can take a minute + for each crash. The shut down takes an eternity too. In a real life use, this current version is almost unusable and i would definately recommend that anybody considering the pretty big download spends there time on some other activity.
There are NO features that i can recommend anyone bothering at the moment. It is just a less stable Win2k with a few features T.B.D to be decided. The start panel may develop into something quite tasty, but the "start page" that keeps being mentioned is a MOCK UP of something that might be!
I know its always great to get your hands on the lastest beta developments - its something i always do, but trust me on this.... Wait for a Beta 1,2 or preferably 3 before even bothering.

i agree with the akulfie guy or whatever his name is, stop complaining wait for a beta cuz remember this is a very early test version, they have atleast another year to tune it up. And they will the good thing about Microsoft is they listen to feedback...

|"Since publicizing the secret Start Panel in the Whistler Preview this week, I've been inundated with requests from beta testers who'd like to know how it works. Well, with the help of a resource editor, I was discovered that there is a third option on the Start pane of the Start and Taskbar Properties dialog, an option that was marked "hidden" when this build was created. The hidden option reads "Clicking on Start displays Start Panel," and the "d" is underlined, meaning that "d" is the accelerator key for that choice. So you can open this dialog and type ALT+D to toggle the Start Panel feature. When you type ALT+D, the Apply button will flicker. Click Apply, close the dialog, and the Start Panel will be enabled. To reverse things back to the original Start menu, simple do the same thing and the Start Panel option will be toggled off." =/\=

|Just so everyone knows, Paul "Kiss Ass" Thurrott did NOT 'discover' this feature. It was originally found out by someone on an IRC channel that decided to search through the Whistler 2250 directories the very day Whistler 2250 and he let a few of the news sites know about it. Besides its not like it was espically hidden waiting to be 'found' by the shameless Paul Thurrott.
Why does everyone treat him like some sort of Windows god when he has his lips pressed so tightly to Microsoft's ass? Go ahead and read through his site. Everything is "I did..." or "I found..." or "Read MY review..." etc etc etc. He's a kiss a** and this will not change. |"Neptune, the aborted consumer Windows project that was merged into Whistler late last year"
WTF is this guy smoking? Whistler was built from scratch upon Windows 2000 because Neptune was built on Win2k Beta3, and all special features were Neptune oriented and would need to be redone anyway.
Score: 0
|Errr... now this WAS true. Neptune was originally supposed to be the next version of Windows (Windows NT 5.1), but Neptune and Mars (a program that does all kinds of nifty stuff, it's used in the new MSN software for example) were merged into one, creating Whistler. This was confirmed by MS officals during the Me beta.

Neptune was to be the next consumer Windows, and the first to be based off of the NT kernel. However, that was scrapped, merged with a project called Oddyssey, which was to be the first upgrade from Windows2000 for buisnesses, and then called it Whistler...
