Microsoft Frees DirectX 9 Release Candidate

By Nate Mook | Published November 14, 2002, 2:17 AM

The first release candidate of DirectX 9.0 was made available for download Wednesday, an unexpected move that marks the first time Microsoft has opened a DirectX beta for public scrutiny. DirectX 9.0 RC0 follows the Beta 3 release that was issued to testers last month.

Version 9.0 improves security and performance, and includes many new features across all technologies that can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs, according to Microsoft. The new release adds a high-level shader language -- based on C -- designed to simplify development.

ATI has already released beta "CATALYST" drivers to take advantage of the technologies included with DirectX 9.0. "The combination of DirectX 9.0 and ATI's driver, CATALYST Beta Release Candidate 0, will provide incredible levels of gaming and cinematic realism," said Dean Lester, Microsoft's General Manager Windows Graphics and Gaming Technologies. ATI has created four demos to showcase the new capabilities.

Microsoft is asking users of the beta to submit big reports via BetaPlace. The final version of DirectX 9.0, expected early next year, must be installed before Release Candidate 0 expires on March 19, 2003. DirectX 9.0 RC0 may be downloaded for Windows 98, Me, 2000 and Windows XP via FileForum.

I have installed dx9 without any probs at all asus a7n333deluxe with 1gb ddr333 mem xp2200 amd chip geforce 4400 creative graphics audigy sound if u do have a ati 9700 there is a fix on warp to search so u can use the beta direct x 9 i have tried many games and aps and found no probs but make sure u have all the latest drivers patches etc as for system restore make sure u create a restore point just before installing and it will work i have tried this several times on my other pc and it works fine also u must remember that there isn't actually anything at the moment that needs dx9 to run or support so u won't find much if any inprovement at the moment. I hear that the first games fully supporting it will be out feb march next year so i suppose we will have to wait and see for the real benifits.

(2). Ati does have a download beta driver for there card that support beta Directx 9.0.

(3). Read farther down for info on that...
"Cant download DirectX 9.0 RC0 but able download ati 9700 pro beta drv"

(4). Read my above message to understand why ati card is going back to bestbuy store... "Slowly read it again".

(5). If you still dont understand read donpacman message and

hal69, I have worked on allot of comps with ATI and nVidia cards and from personal experience ATI is far less likely to crash your system considering they make their own card, unlike nVidia who only makes the chips. + ATI has better support and their cheaper. Another thing is even if the NV30 was out right now you'd still be waiting on microsoft considering any 3D graphics card you buy is dependent on DirectX, so complain to microsoft and not ATI. Also what's the point in installing DX9? Not one of you have games that take advantage of it's features. The only games so far that I know of that do take advantage is UT 2003 and Doom and nether of them will be released until DX9 is released.

I agree with alots of users out there who brought ATI 9700 pro card and not able to test it Because Of micro-Crap aka-microsoft DirectX 9.0 RC o installer doesnt work!!! This is plain silly to the point im returning my Ati 9700 pro card back to bestbuy. Sending ATI a nice go-f**k-yourself email... of screwing the customers. If I have to depend of MS making the decision if im able use my graphic card then forget!!! If this is the future down the pipe line w/a Directx installer app btw that doesnt work then there no need hold onto the Ati 9700 pro graphic card. Ati could have made it easier gain access to directx 9.0 by putting there beta driver w/directx 9.0. So Ill wait for nivida Nv30 graphic card instead. This last time I deal ATI again. Ashame on both companies!!!!! Now im not jumping to conclusion that all ATI fault for not including full pack install for Directx 9.0... but how we gonna test it if ms wont allow us download it. If there is a link where you can download the full install Directx 9, please put it on here!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL, i have dl DirectX, and well, i have had one problem, with a game called "Dealta Force:Landwarrior". once i installed DX9.0, it made the ground, buildings in the game, go gray, after i installed it. But the most funny thing is, that i have Comanche 4, and it hasnt changed one bit, so, i have no idea what happen, but sure, there was some inprovements to the graphics wise, but, i still havent had any problems with DX9.0 Beta, and im even hoping that Microsoft will have a new update for DX9.0, in there beta 2 of the sys componet.

I want to know if Microsoft is going to let us download an SDK as well. Since I have done some programming in DirectX before, I am very very pleased to see this release but would like to have an SDK to work with.

If you guys are going to whine about beta's don't download them.
