Microsoft Home Now Up and Running!
By Aaron Dobbins | Published November 15, 2000, 1:03 PM
In other Microsoft news, the latest in home technologies are now on display in New York and the recently unveiled Microsoft Home. The home features the latest and greatest in wireless and connectivity technologies, some of which are still in the works. The 8,000 square foot abode features 25 such technologies aimed at making homes more productive and efficient for the future. Microsoft is offering virtual tours of the wired home here.
Wasn't the name "Microsoft Home" used for Microsoft's series of Windows 3.1 software?

|just a note to all you Windows buffs out there (including myself) I run Windows 2000 as well and it has never blue screened on me either since its release, I have however had countless IE crashes and various other programs that have locked up, Win 2000 is better because all programs are threads and ONE thread can be cut to save the OS.. In win9x that is not possible, all programs run off the same 32 bit threading, so if one crashes all others go down with it most of the time causing a BSOD because win9x cant handle it..thats the difference folks, till next time and happy computing!

|I must say, you are completly wrong. Every process is just that, it's own process in Win9x. The thing that is different in Win2k is, each program is run in a protected memory space, that is what keeps them all from coming down.
Athough, I don't know why people say it brings down every program when something crashes in Win9x, that's never happened to me before.

|Kids, wake up and see the future. Every computer at MS is running Win2k (=NT.) Nt doesn't crash, and if it does, it's a hardware failure or a crappy driver.
I'm running a beta version since a year now, and it has not crashed. Ever. [Except the time I opened every single executable file on my 30 GB hd, but that doesn't really count... ;) ]
BTW, in case you're interested: I had drivers cripple beOS, and even (holy mother of Linus!) Linux. There. It's not crash-proof either. Not to mention Solaris, which I won't go into...
The MS Home runs on NT. It won't crash. If you ppl were actually using MS's high-end software and OSs, you wouldn't be complaining. I admit, it's earlier products were more or less POSware, but recently it's producing top-quality software.
Win2k is stable as hell (a paradox, huh?). Office 2000 never crashed.
I'm now running Windows.NET Beta 1 (aka Whistler 2296, Windows 2001) and again, I can just tell you that MS is moving in the right direction in all areas. Heck, the OS and Office 10 even apologize when crashing (which is rare, but they're both beta, so hey...)
Just my 2 cents...
;)
Peace!

|The technology for creating an internet enabled home has been around. IT's called x20 (www.x10.org). There are a wide variety of x10 appliances available from lighting control from setting your vcr using the infra red transmitter module. Freshmeat (www.freshmeat.net) has a section devoted to x10 software. There is much open source software available for controlling x10 devices. If you are really masochistic, you can even control it from winblows, but linux is the preferred operating system because of it's speed, versatility and reliability.

|May I be the first to comment on this laughable event!
We can expect to see BSOD's on just about anything with a screen now, Home's will be bug infested again (just when we thought we had beaten it) and the most frightening of all, MS really will control how we live (not just what we have on our PC's) We can expect to have to input 25 digits before we can enter our homes (after you accept the license or EULA of course) It's too frightening to imagine! and anyone with knowledge of homes will surely find the backdoor in NO TIME and crack it!
uhhh, I cant bear to imagine it, what will be next, A Open source Linux house?
hehe LOL

|You can certainly be the first to comment moronically. What is so laughable about a computer controlled house? Or is it just laughable because it's Microsoft and this is just a typical 'insecure Linux user' attack?
A friend of mine has been using Windows to control his entire house via X-10 devices for several years. Temperature, alarm, lights, pool, doorlocks, all controlled by script. It works very well and hasn't crashed on him in a long time, if ever, due to the OS.
Now, if I wanted to sound like an idiot, I could say that if it was Linux controlled, your house would have to be patched twice weekly to keep the millions of script kiddies out of your hot-tub & liquor cabinet. Not only that, but the house would be designed so cryptically that only the builder & contractors would feel comfortable in it, but at least they'd have a false sense of superiority over the 'lusers' who aren't as smart as they are.
Anyway, your post was knee-jerk nonsense and you know it. But hey, any excuse to slam MS, right?

|hmm, Im not a Linux user.. I use Windows 2000 and 98-ME. I was implying to the fact that MS has found a way to control almost every aspect of our lives by suggesting that we get our homes up on Windows software.. now if i am correct home users will have Windows ME and business corperations will use Windows 2000 (smp for all those lifts in high rise buildings) Since Window ME is primarily DOS and buggy as hell (dont deny that MS released ME with BETA IE5.5 and BETA windows Media Player 7) we can expect to see techies at MS coming through the self made Back doors of our houses to have a "look-see" of what we have installed in our homes..and most annoyingly of all we will have to use 25 digit PIN's to get through the front door!

|you really are a moron aren't you? Windows ME did away with DOS completely. There might be a command line utility still but that'slike saying Linux runs DOS because they have command line utilities.
If you are a windows user, you really did a nice job of disguising yourself as a Linux sheep by bashing MS in the exact same way they normally do. Next time try constructively criticizing Windows instead of rehashing the same tired commentary spewed forth by the insecure Linux sheep.

|HA! you make me laugh (and sick) You think MS has done away with DOS in WindowsME ??? then you are very wrong my friend.. I have read MANY reviews AND bought the DAMNED OS in MOST reviews you are SHOWN how to get dos mode BACK into WindowsME from its *HIDDEN* state!! just cause you cannot see it, doesnt mean its not there.. Windows Codename "Whistler" will be the first "home user" windows operating system NOT based on the Dos Legacy kernel.. If you are smart enough, you can still configure ME to run in Dos Mode (not that i would want to anyway)
I felt compelled to correct you on your sad comment..
I still wont have a MS home, I'd rather enter with a real key than a Encrypted 25 digit one. so there
I am allowed to voice my opinion here, aren't I?

|Hmmmm..... the moron is right. Whistler will be the first OS without DOS.
But he IS still a moron....

|Yeah, I have to say, Whistler is THEE operating system. There isn't anything better than it yet. Linux? Mandrake and RedHat both crashed on me 10 or 20 times before I removed them. We are talking 10 or 20 times in a day. If this is where open-source is going, there doomed to failure. Now I have to go, my sound card isn't working right, but there is no such thing as "install drivers" like Windows, so I have to recompile my kernel.....bah....whatever...
