Microsoft Investigating IE6 Leaks
By Aaron Dobbins | Published February 7, 2001, 4:21 PM
Microsoft is currently investigating how an early copy of Internet Explorer seemed to leak onto the Web last week. In tradition with just about all of its software siblings, IE6 was leaked for download by someone either internally at Microsoft or a beta tester who was supposed to keep their NDA. Both FileClicks and The-Ctrl-Alt-Del.com had posted reviews and downloads for the next version of Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer software.
In the reviews, which included screenshots, the sites highlighted some of the enhanced features in the upcoming software. One such "enhancement" includes a left-hand sidebar, which would be familiar to users as the Netscape sidebar. Another topbar, at least in the beta version, has been added to include links to Microsoft Web properties and Real.com as well as tools to personalize and organize Explorer bars to each users liking.
Other enhancements include usability and interface improvements to make navigation and other features such as printing and saving easier on users. Only users with Windows 2000 were able to download and install this early beta however.
You can view screenshots and learn more about it over at the-ctrl-alt-del.com.
Well, Betanews has done it again!
Let's see... IE6 leaked "last week". That's what... the first of February? Funny that it was all over Newsgroups, the Web, and IRC before Christmas.
MS is upset and investigating? Funny that they haven't done anything about the several sites that pop up on a quick Altavista search, nevermind the sites listed IN THIS THREAD ON BETANEWS.
Also, the latest IE6 build "leaked" is 2411, not 2403.
*sigh* I wish for once Betanews could get something right.

|Well, how about a short review of IE6 since we are here? Someone is b****ing about a beta being released and the competition seeing the new features ahead of time. First of all, unless you consider about 6000 links to Microsoft places a new feature, then there isn't much to talk about. The Sidebar does seem to include an integrated media player, but who cares. Someone else thought the IE had a small memory footprint. Makes me wonder if they can type "Start--Run--taskmgr" and then look at it. Hmm, after 3 pages of browsing 15 megs of memory is a small print? And wow, this browser is still over two years behind when it comes to W3C compliance. Standards that had final approval in 1998 still don't work. Don't even try to use XML with CSS2 and CSS3. (it won't work right) Don't get me all wrong here, the beta seems to be a much better, more stable, and faster browser than 5.01 and especially the worthless 5.5. (at least on the 8 different machines I have seen it on) Could be a good thing if MS could ever learn that they DON'T make the web standards. This browser can be a real winner if they can figure out in the next 25 years to support HTML 4 strict, Ecmascript, (the standardized Javascript) CSS1, CSS2, CSS3, XML, and DOM1. (gosh a bunch of free developers were able to do that...its called Gecko and before you go off saying how buggy NS is, then try Opera which runs on the Gecko core as well) Finally, the expected response here is that this is only a beta and they will put in more "features" in later builds. That may be, but seems kind of late to be messing with the browser core that they are building around. My only request is that they can possible include at least another 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 links to MSN, MS messenger, MS website...etc etc. That will make it a far better browser. Finally, lets all remember something. MS has some talented employees, but the brain power of the rest of the world FAR EXCEEDS the brain power of their corp. Anything that can be done, can be undone. New copy protect scheme? Heh, it will get some of the dummies, not gonna stop smart people. (oh, and the Beta builds of Whistler tried some of those...took a couple of days to hack didn't it?) Or how about the forced registration of office 2000? That didn't last long did it? Here is a concept, some people will never pay for stuff. Most will if the price is right. New windows? How about $29? I'd pay that.

|Hey you guys know all that tracking software companies come out with??? This is where the new anti-pirate protection scheme is going to be most felt. I doubt it will affect as many home users as the whiners on the internet would have you believe.
However, Microsoft loses public confidence and could possibly lose money from R&D by having people pirate early beta copies of a product. If average consumers, or even media outlets (don't want to call them news sources since news and the internet don't go hand in hand) start reporting bugs and incomplete features in beta products it reflects on the company. WHile this won't cost MS money for IE, it could cause issues with consumer confidence in other products; "If they can't get a web browser to work right, how can I expect them to get an office suite or OS to work right?"
Also, competitors could get a leg up in their competition by having early betas released. They implement the features sooner than expected in their product cycle and MS IE loses any competitive advantage it has over another browser.
While MS doesn't make any money from most end users, they do license IE to OEMs and ISPs to make personalized versions of the product available to their customers. This IS big money and MS stands to lose quite a bit here if the above entioned scenarios happen.

|"...by the people for he people..."?
You need to get out more and stop reading Stallman's manifesto's. Software is made, in the case of Internet Explorer and non-OSS, by companies for the people. Their not releasing betas to the open public is more a legal issue than anything else. They open up a can of worms making betas open for the public, plus the earlier they opn the beta, the longer a competitor has to copy the features that make it unique. With OSS being given away these days, and the OSS programmers having no ethical issues with copying others work, this is an even more pressing problem.

When a software is released early, without proper testing, and its buggier than crap, then the product is deemed buggier than crap and that's hard to erase from someones mind. Even if the final product is perfect.
The control of betas is supposed to keep the company from having to battle questions and opinions about a product they haven't even finished working on yet.
I love reading the reviews and people saying "there's no reason to upgrade". Sure, there isn't now, but how many months more work do they have to put into it? Why make your review now? Its pointless and demeaning to the programmers.

|Com Doc,
you have problems, you know what, I am a technical person and warez sites are valuable, I learn alot from them. I evaluate software and if I like it I buy, if I don't well I don't lose several hundred dollars, I can't afford to pay $20,000 a year to keep up with the lastest software on my salary. Companies have made money from my recommendations to purchase the same software the I got from warez sites. I can learn it and evaluate it, recommend it and I ready to support it. I do agree with you that profiting from pirated software is wrong and those people should be prosecuted. But the law allows for people to install unlicensed software for the period of 24 hours and then they must removed it after that. If you can't stop warez sites. Try to tell Iraq what to do and see what they say, you can stop it in America, but it will just go across our borders to other countries. You claim to be a partner to Microsoft. Well then you get alot of software for free. Well alot of techies don't have that privilage. I spoke with a Microsoft Rep about this, Bill Gates is aware that technical people do this and he doesn't care, because he said " Techies make the world go around, the more that use my software, the more Microsoft sells to the companies they work at"
Microsoft probably laughs and says We'll let this fool rock the boat. It is apparent that you hate the world and the people in it. And you want to cause as much pain and suffering as you can. You truelly are evil, maybe the Antichrist. My advice to you is, get off the lithium, because it isn't working, and stick to the drinking. I am sorry you are unhappy with your life, it is your fault not ours. Maybe I should let ComDoc, Inc know you are using their name and giving them a bad name. Bill Gates, Thanks for my job. |I just stumbled upon this site tonight and as I read through these posts, I did not know whether to laugh or cry or just pound my face into the wall in frustration. CompDoc, what are you trying to do? Please do not reply to these questions of mine with jokes about black men who will make me their b**** in prison or tell me that MicroSoft will be knocking on my door tomorrow. Just answer my questions. Why are you so in love with MicroSoft? What have they ever done for you? Could you explain your partnership with them?
Why do you insist that Windows is superior to Linux. Everyone knows the truth in that. I use Windows because I have to, as do many people, but don't insult our intelligence. The fact that it uses 20 year old code just proves the genius behind it.
Do you know that you will never make a difference. Even if you made a full time living out of reporting "crimes" on the internet, you could never even scratch the surface. You are one man(?) against thousands who hate you. Why do you thrive on the grief of others? Do you realize how many people on this thread hate you. Why?
Microsoft does not love you. We do not like you. We loathe your existance. If you died in horrible agony, you would not be missed by a single soul. Do you have a mother, or were you born of all that is vile and wrong? Does your heart beat only when it causes distress in the lives of others. Do you think God is holding His arms open waiting for you to recieve His eternal thanks?
For all those of you under the attacks of CompDoc, I salute you. I tried to keep this letter from succumbing to my emotions, but CompDoc has pushed the situation to far. Stay strong my friends. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger. CompDoc may wipe out a few, but we will only grow stronger. Is anyone willing to count members of our side and compare them to CompDoc's? I probably won't be able to keep current with this discussion because I'm visiting a college tomorrow in another state, but I look forward to CompDocs replies and to seeing our numbers grow.
Peace my friends.

|What, you mean Linux isn't based on 20 year old code? I thought UNIX was around way before Windows was, and seeing as Linux wass built from UNIX, that kind of suggests (from your analogy anyway) that Linux must be so crappy because it is old.
I'm not saying Windows is better than Linux (I don't want to start another war now CompDoc has finally gone), i'm just pointing out your error.

You must mean "based on the concept of Unix, which has been around for 20 years", right....
If it was based on the "code" ten it couldn't be "open source" right?
By the way, I use Windows (so I'm not a zealot....)

Not sure what virus it was (it might not have been one), but first it restarted my computer, then when i tried to load (tried..didn't work though) window (and dont flame my windows either) i found that all my main directories had been deleted (i.e. Program files, windows, My Document, Downloads, even backup), and it had a warning at the choose screen.
WARNING: windows has detected aregistration/configuration error. Choose, Command prompt only (cant though, windows directory gone), and run SCANREG.
It might not have been a virus, but it looks like to much of a co-incidence to me. Afterall, it left my minor directories in place (i.e. Misc., ...etc). Any help?
