Microsoft Investigating Xbox Live Hackings

By the Betanews Staff | Published March 21, 2007, 3:34 PM

Microsoft is investigating claims made on several Internet forums that hackers are breaking into customer's Xbox Live accounts and using their accounts to purchase premium content and steal personal information, the company confirmed in a statement to the press on Wednesday. Saying "security is a top priority," it will look into any report of hacking it receives.

Gamers had been complaining that the Redmond company has not taken their complaints of break-ins seriously, either telling them to complain to their credit card companies or claiming they could not do anything about the problem. It is currently unclear as to how hackers are gaining access to the accounts, however some are speculating users are being tricked into giving enough of their personal information to facilitate a break-in.

My 360 was hacked and was converted to a ColecoVision when I was asleep.

Thank you, guess the PS3 worshipers will have to find something else for their smear campaign. Oh who am I kidding, they'll just claim he's lying.

That's weird, Joey Deacon told me that Betanews is a Pro-Microsoft site. This article must be a mistake. Either that or Joey is a Sony fanboy that likes to cry a lot. I'm sure it's just a mistake though. Seriously though, I'm not really surprised. Any online service is going to be prone to hacking, and Microsoft especially does not have the greatest security track record. No matter how this turns out it will probably give them another black eye.

Have you seen the amount of Apple news that makes it into Betanews? You wouldn't think they are pro-microsoft.

If you look through that list, many other things are a top priority as well. "Live Services,"
Customers, "build[ing] a common set of messaging and workflow plumbing that will underlie future versions of Windows, Office, SQL Server and other products," etc.

Even with regards to Xbox live Microsoft has put "Safety" before "Security..."

What? No Xbox 360 controllers flying through TV sets? :p

Only if a giant message comes up on the screen that says "You Have Been Hx4oRed" or something followed by customer getting so angry throwing controller at tv as they realize they are being watched and they are going to get you all of you...but that probably wouldn't happen
