Microsoft Plans New Xbox 360 Arcade Console

Product listings on Amazon.com and the Toys 'R' Us Web sites indicate that the Xbox 360 Core system is set to be replaced by a new console that focuses on its arcade game capabilities October 23. If earlier reports provided are correct, the console will come in a darker gray finish (being called a "standard finish") and include a 256MB memory card. An HDMI port will be added, and the device will include one wireless controller, although no headset.
Central to the new SKU is the inclusion of five arcade games, two of which are expected to be UNO and Pac-Man. No other details were immediately available, and Microsoft had yet to publicly confirm the new model's existence as of press time.
they all suck, thank god for 'games for windows'!! :-)

|Shouldn't they be concentrating on making the Dirtbox360 actually WORK before selling different configurations?
Even the latest Halo3 Falcon units are RRODing. So much for 65nm saving the day.

|Really Steve? Can you back up your claim or are you still jealous that the PS3 still isn't selling well and the XBroke 360's are still flying off the shelves.
Do you know some people are hoping thiers breaks so they can buy an Elite? I've heard it from a lot of people.
It must be nice to have such a following where people will buy a second or third console.
As a person who doesn't own one, you will never know how much better it is than the PS3.

|Having owned both, (had a 360, still have a PS3), the Xbox is a rushed to market pile of steaming dung. I went through 2 before I ebayed the 3rd, and bought a PS3.
The 360 might have a good selection of games, but that is because of it's year headstart. Everything else about it sucks badly. The PS3 will be king of this console generation, like the PS1 and PS2 before it.
Even Kotaku list more AAA PS3 titles this season that any other console.

It wasn't rushed to market. Microsoft skimped out on a decent heatsink.
"I went through 2 before I ebayed the 3rd, and bought a PS3."
Add another $400 to that eBay'd 360 and you have enough to buy a PS3.
"The 360 might have a good selection of games"
Might? The 360's game catalogue is light years ahead of the PS3's.
"but that is because of it's year headstart."
The PS3's been around for a year and still has a piss poor selection of games. The 360 had better games when it was a year old.
"Everything else about it sucks badly."
Everything apart from the games? Games are the most important thing.
"The PS3 will be king of this console generation, like the PS1 and PS2 before it."
The PS1 won because it was cheaper than the competition and had better games. The PS2 won because it had no real competition and had an awesome collection of games. The PS3 is by far the most expensive console, and has by far a worse games library than the 360. Care to explain just how the PS3's going to leapfrog the 360?
"Even Kotaku list more AAA PS3 titles this season that any other console."
Let's compare scores from Metacritic.
Console score: [90 or over] / [89 to 85] / [84 to 80]
PS3: 1 / 7 / 19
Xbox 360: 8 / 11 / 50
The 360 has EIGHT TIMES the number of 90+ games and 2.5 times the number of 80-84 games. The 360's year-long head start doesn't explain why Sony haven't been putting out good games.
Score: 0
|Exactly!
The real reason why there is a piss-poor selection of games is because the PS3 is not a game console first and foremost. The ability to play mediocre games seems like an afterthought to what I consider to be a modern-day Philips CD-i.
The PS3 excels at quite a few things, but includes absolutely nothing that game designers can actually utilize properly or efficiently.
That "year head start" excuse they continue to drone on about is becoming very tired. In one month, the PS3 will have been available for a year in Japan and the US. Comparing the available titles (not just good titles) at the one year mark for both consoles is rather humorous, indeed.

|Guess again. I love the 360 but I do not see the PS3 or the 360 catching the Wii. The Wii appears to be the one that will win this generation with the 360 taking second and the PS3 last. Once games come out that appeal to a more diverse audience on the 360 sales will grow in other areas. With more RPG's and strange games were you push a ball around collecting stuff start appearing I think the future will improve for the 360 in foreign countries.

a) it's considerably better hardware
b) it will soon have considerably better games
c) it's now the same price as the 360 Elite, the difference of course, is that the PS3 actually works.

|Hmm..have they fixed the death rate on these things yet?
I am in the process of returning my second 360 in 2 years. I'm selling my HD DVD player, since its useless without the 360. MS may have another hit, but with breakdown close to 50% (they admit 30% - we know thats downplayed) I'd like to see them FIX the stupid thing so I can enjoy games like Madden and Halo.
I have two other friends whose 360 died as well, so this is not a small thing at all.
Score: 0
|Actually they have, I have heard that 85% of all launch day consoles have gone RROD. MS is replacing consoles no questions asked these days.
It's much better on later consoles and the latest gen Elites are whisper quiet and only get warm. My Pro from Dec 07 also runs very quiet and pretty cool compared to older ones.

|Dec 07?

|Sounds like a trimmed down budget model. And if so could be bad news for the already slow selling PS3.

|I personally saw the stock at the local BB dwindle in a week since Halo 3's release on the pro system go from dozens to 0, the Halo editionwas almost sold out, and they still had a lot of Elites.
The guy I talked to was a PS3 fanboy, who admitted the 360 was selling due to Halo, the same thing happened with Gears of War but there was no "Gears" edition to help boost sales.
Sony needs to come up with a white and chrome version of the PS3 and start slapping "special edition" graphics on those things if they want to sell more during the holidays. If they had an aracde version that came with a huge collection of retro arcade games, the older crowd who grew up in the 80's would probably love it. A special arcade stick like the 360 has would also be cool.
I know Halo 3 sold over 4.5 million copies, I think it's closer to 5 right now.
Letaly I find myself trying out a lot more XBOX arcade trials, then buyong the full versions for games like Geon Emotions and Marble Ultra Blast etc....
They are more like the old arcade games where you don't have to spend a month to finish the game. They are quick, fun games with lots of color and and old school feel.
The XBOX arcade is one my favorite things about the 360. By the way, if you do a lot of IM, the snap on keyboard for the controller is really nice, they put it at the bottm as opposed to the top like some controllers have.
All right, I'm done cheerleading the 360 now.
p.s. I just saw the box photo. No HDD? No special plate on the front or color? One description says wired controller, one says wireless.
It's just a core with a fancy name and some included arcade games.

|I'm 36... a huge fan of the "Golden Age" of arcade games.
That said, I think I'll stick with my custom SlikStik arcade control panel for the PC. :)
I agree though, this should appeal to the older crowd (30-ish on up).

|yountmj,
I built my own side by side c***tail table for MAME years ago, it still works and is a huge hit at our family parties.
I have a SlikStik spinner / chrome sticks with Happ buttons and an IPAC with an Imperial trackball. It's pretty sweet if you have all the roms for every game.
I'm 38 so I know what is was like to grow up in the dank arcades smoking and playing Paperboy and Moon Patrol.

|Haha, right on! I knew there was a reason we got along so well. :)
I went with the chrome spinner, but opted for the blue lighted trackball and frosted joystick balls on mine. My panel looks almost exactly like one pictured on the bottom:

For the time being, it sits on the coffee table in the living room with plenty of room for 2 players, and my media PC handles all of my emulator functions, with ROMs stored on my file server in the back (and yes, to date I have all MAME ROMs and CHDs... huge emulation fanatic). :)
A cabinet is next, and I've seen quite a few innovative examples so far that others have built... just can't decide on a design.

|Could not agree with you more. I loved th old games. My basement is filled with old classic arcade games. Next gen graphics still don't have the fun factor of crazy climber or Zaxxon. I am thinking about a MAME machine myself. The arcade games on Live are an awesome return to the time of fun games that stole tons of quarters.
Score: 0
|Heh... Starcade, anyone? :)
Or, how about Buckner & Garcia's Pac-Man Fever album on vinyl? Cheesy, but good memories.
I still remember playing Zaxxon for the first time at home on a ColecoVision after dumping so many quarters in the arcade on that one.
Speaking of eating quarters, Defender, Dragon's Lair, and the entire Street Fighter franchise did their jobs admirably.

|Although I usually don't like when manufacturers have multiple models of the same product, with the Core's pending retirement, I am sure this arcade console will help Microsoft sell more consoles.
I wonder how many people bought an Xbox 360 due to the release of Halo 3?

|This is pretty good.

Doesn't seem like it helped boost sales much, but as long as the rate of sales stays rather high then a lot of 360's should be sold well into the holidays.

|Thanks for the link!
I guess since the big point is that the PS3 doesn't appear to have a big holiday title available, Microsoft should have a ... decent... holiday season.
Score: 0
|yeah, the ps3 is in big trouble this holiday season. The Wii has Mario, Brawl and Metroid, 360 has Halo 3 and Bioshock.
PS3 has.........a price cut? Sure, when GT5 hits sometime next year, they will finally have something, but that does nothing this holiday season. Not looking good for PS3 right now.
Score: 0
|GT was the only reason I bought a PS1. Some dudes were playing this amazing game at the import tuner shop, and the next day I had a Playstation and GT. The only other game I had was TinyTank because it was $5.
As long as Poly doesn't screw GT5 up, it will sell consoles. I don't see it being on par with Halo, but it will be a long-term seller for sure.
