Microsoft Refines Windows XP

By Nate Mook | Published December 12, 2001, 12:06 AM

Microsoft on Tuesday issued a second application compatibility update for Windows XP, and announced upcoming support for USB 2.0. The 1.5MB compatibility package, currently available for download via Windows Update, increases support for over 40 older software applications. Notable inclusions on the list are Easy CD Creator 4.02, Norton AntiVirus 2001, Corel Draw, and RealPlayer 7.0. The software giant is also finalizing support for USB 2.0, and expects to provide an update by early 2002.

USB 2.0 increases the available bandwidth for high-speed devices from 12Mbps to 480Mbps, making the technology ideal for video cameras and storage devices.

Microsoft released beta USB 2.0 drivers for Windows XP last July, but opted to leave support out of the new operating system due to a lack of devices available at the time. USB 2.0 support will be additionally provided for Windows 2000 users in a driver package; however there are no plans to include the technology in Service Pack 3. Microsoft will not support USB 2.0 devices under Windows 9x or NT.

Updates to provide Bluetooth support in Windows XP are slated for mid-year 2002, enabling the OS to communicate with numerous hand-held devices.

My conextant 56k works fine with xps default drivers installed :|. Hmmm, also Windows 2000 drivers work great in XP, try grabbing those for your hardware if you can!

Go to the manufacturers web sites. I know HP has updated XP drivers for the OfficeJet 600 (believe it or not, came out the same day as XP was released!). That would be the best bet.

dunno if anyone else is getting this but i keep getting C++ Run Time Error when i am using Morpheus now and then. i have reformated (because of some software which pretty much killed my system!) and have not installed Morpheus until a newer version is out that is XP compat. If anyone knows a fix for 1.3.3 version please email me morgan.pugh@ntlworld.com thanks

Use Grokster, same as Morpheus/Kazaa, without the spyware, and I'm quite sure it works in XP, as that it's running right now. ;)

Yep, groksters da best, works in xp fine and it does exactly the same job as kazaa/morpheus, only better :).

Fancy a few mp3z at 192kbs, then come on down to grokster!

While XP was in development, M$ promised full backwards compatibility with MS-DOS (through emulation), Win9X (through emulation?), Win2k, and WinNT. Why are there so many problems?

Did they actually say FULL-compatibility? I found this:

Windows 9x applications that were never designed or tested on Windows NT/2000, such as games. DirectX games were at a 40 percent pass rate in Windows 2000. That figure will be as near to 100 percent as possible in Windows XP. Previous to the Beta 2 release, it was at 81 percent.

Do you have anything else? As for USB 2.0 and Bluetooth. This stuff is pretty new.

It would help if you listed the actual programs or hardware you are having trouble installing. Just saying "video card" doesn't offer enough info :-)

Always good to start with the hardware manufacturers. XP specific software and drivers are popping up everywhere. I also found that running the compat test first let me know what I could expect problems with and in some cases provided links to a solution.

I'm still not convinced that these fixes will work. I'm using a dual boot 2000/XP system and I still have alot of programs that were 2000 certified which will not run under XP and I don't want to upgrade them at this time. I might when and only when the first service pack comes out for XP.

Everyone always said they were going to wait till the first SP with 2k also. And when that came out it didnt make the OS any better or any worse. Overall you still had bugs, and you still had security holes. Why wait. Upgrade now. At the very most all you will lose is the time it took to clik 8 times to install the program.

I strongly disagree. For basic users, SP1 did help some problems, most of which could've been resolved w/critical updates from Microsoft. For more advanced users, I have found that SP1 for win2k was a massive improvement to Win2k with awesome improvements to overall stability. I still prefer SP1 over SP2 and SP3 Beta. I will personally wait till XP SP1 to try again.

"still prefer SP1 over SP2"? Why?

yeah i dont understand either SP2 is better than SP1 10 fold! SP3 beta cannot be judged as it is not final yet and still has bugs that are not fixed and cause some systems to be unstable.

and FYI before anyone makes any smart comments, I am a Beta Tester for Win2k SP3 I've had a NDA on file for some time and I've beta tested other stuff for microsoft also.

This would be nice, but I just uninstalled NAV2001, and now it won't let me re-install because I get an error that says "can't find navkrnlo.vxd"

Plus, Easy CD Creator doesn't seem to work either.

Try going to Roxio's web site- they have a few XP updates you can download there.

CloneCD combined with Nero is a unbeatable force, i would like to see someone beat it.

I mean its simple, CloneCD makes exact copies of CDS flawlessly, which Nero sucks at big time.

And Nero is perfect for backups, data storage, mp3z, music cds and video cds.

Only 2 programs i've ever had to use, Ez CD 5.0 + can kiss my ass, it sux, EZ CD has always sucked for me, i mean, i lost SOOO many cds over it, i mean my first burned cd was a coaster!, LOL thx EZ CD.

I've tried em all, these are the best.

Is there any way to download this update without installing? I want to grab it to install on a laptop that doesn't have an Internet connection.

Score: 0

Let the Windows update page install them, but AFTER the downloading is over and BEFORE the files have been completely install go to the WUTEMP folder (should be in the root dir of your HD) and copy the executables to another directory. This must be done quickly because the files are erased after they are installed.

Sounds reasonable. Microsoft thinks I've already installed the update. Any way to convince it otherwise?

Yep. This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Thanks. Unfortunately it doesn't work. On the XP Windows Update page, go to "Personalize Windows Update" and check the box to show the Windows Update Catalog. Click Save Settings, then go to Windows Update Catalog, Find Updates for Windows O/S's, and ask for the Windows XP critical updates. Pick the ones you want, choose a location on your hd to store them, and then download them. Included with each download is a link to its help page.

I was able to get Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.51 to work with WinXP after downloading a Symevent update, although I can't find the website now or even search for it becuase Symantec's website is all screwed up. You could probably do a search for it later today after they fix their search engine.

Upgrade to NAVCE 7.6!! It's soooo much better than 7.03 or 7.1. I'm running about 1500 clients on one NAVCE parent server. The network load balancing in 7.5/7.6 is great. I get new defs down to 1500 clients in about 30 minutes. With 7.1, one client is updated at a time...and it took hours to update defs.

7.5 will work the same as 7.51. 7.51 added support for WinME and that's really it.
