Microsoft Refreshes IE6 Preview

By Justin Jenkins and David Worthington | Published June 24, 2001, 11:30 PM

A refresh of the Internet Explorer 6 Public Preview was posted for customers to evaluate this weekend. Many bugs reported in the first build have been squashed, stability has been improved, and code optimized. This download will upgrade Internet Explorer, its base components, as well as Outlook Express for Windows 2000 users. Additionally, it has been reported that some users encountered Apple's QuickTime browser plug-in broken after installing this update. The refresh sports build number 6.0.2479.0006, and is the newest build publicly available.

Internet Explorer 6 includes many changes and enhanced features that bring a new way to browse the Internet. It features a new look and behavior, including innovative browsing capabilities such as enhanced Explorer bars, integrated instant messaging, media playback, and automatic picture resizing. Internet Explorer 6 can also help to maintain the privacy of personal information on the Web, and provide error reporting to identify problems to be fixed in future Internet Explorer service packs.

Total download size for a typical installation is approximately 25 MB. However, because the setup downloads only those files that are necessary for your computer, this size may vary between 11 and 75 MB.

After installing the refresh I seem to have lost this capability. Which really sucks when you're trying to download a movie and not play it. Or some other misc. file that seems to disappear after downloading it. Anyone know a work around for this? And I've already checked the temp directory...

The only beef I have with IE6 so far is since the refresh of IE6 whenever I click on a favorite with multiple windows open the favorite only opens in the first instance of IE. I can set it so a new window opens for favorites but there's no option for IE to open a favorite in the current window. DAMN DAMN DAMN its annoying as hell.

I have the first IE6 preview and I want to try this one. However, when I run the setup and it gets to where it is looking for a download site, it stops and gives me a message that it is unable to determine my proxy server. I dont have a proxy server and havent had trouble with any other download this way.
Can someone out there help me on this? Thanks.

I guess I am just lucky, as I have had no problems at all after installing this new preview of IE6. As for Quicktime, I relinstalled it, and works great now.
I am running Windows2000 Pro with SP2. Using an HP Officejet 600, with no printing errors. Haven't lost any passwords, can get into all my sites, etc. Guess I am just "the lucky one" with no problems, judging by the postings here! ;-)

Oh yeah- Netcaptor 6.5.0 Beta 6 works fine with
Internet Explorer: 6.0.2479.0006.
I also have Download Accelerator Plus 5 installed. It intergrates with IE6 just great!

Well, I broke down and am trying it. First thing I noticed - my DHTML scripts were no longer working, rather like Opera.
Arachnophilia crashed out once when I went to Preview page, but not consistantly.

I just installed this, on windows 2000 server and now I'm noticing that the Expand/Collapse button next to folders will dissappear in Windows Explorer. Has anyone else seen this happen? And when you right click on the folder to do it manually it only show a collapse command yet clicking on it has no effect.

I had that yesterday, but it seems ok today :*)

I can't see why ?

Ok, this is sort of an extension of what I said ealier. Normally when you shut down the computer and have Windows Explorer loaded, it will reload when you turn the computer back on. Well it's not doing that anymore.

oh, and is it just me or does anyone find the IE bookmark system annoying? For one thing, it's more difficult to modify an existing bookmark (unlike Netscape where you don't have to scroll to get to your link), and second why do they make you scroll when you have an overflow of favourites? It's just like in Win98 when the program menu would scroll when you have more program groups making it take forever to scroll to your desired program. Why don't they allow the option to choose how we'd like to customize it?

i seriously think that mozilla and IE are almost alike in every way, speed wise and quality wise now. IE is going to have a market share advantage due to windows, BUT it's nice to have a viable alternative once again, if for no other reason but to push IE to get better, and in turn improve mozilla..

I have 2488 and it has the same bug as 2479 that it does not let you log on to some website like webshots.com or even BBS Board sites. This did not happen in 2469. Try it out and see for your self. Where can you post bugs on IE6 ( direct link please )? 2479 has problems with Shockwave sites where it does not let you click on some Shockwave links like in www.mixman.com site.

Check your "privacy" tab on the Internet Tools page. I had problems connecting to some sites (line Line6's page) until I adjust the privacy meter. Some paes dont have a valid security certificate in place so IE 6 blocks cookies and the such from them. If you notice, the default level is Medium, which is only compatible with most websites.

IE6 may not run too well on other version of windows, but I quite like it on XP. It runs extremely well for me, and OE 6.0 is very very nice too. I'm just hoping MS really releases RC1 of XP tomorrow, that way I can finally see what kinda download speeds I really get from MS (:

i just have to say this... i have heard SEVERAL people say things about ie6 - i depend on microsoft for a living, i am an asp developer; however, this has got to be the most poorly coded app they have ever relesed... nothing but trouble.. my advice to anyone would be to wait until it went final release

I installed Preview 1 and it permanently messed up Outlook/Outlook express - a known bug made it incompatible with non-MS email messages. I.e. if someone sent me a message from a Linux machine, they would appear with no
subject or sender.....

I wonder if this is fixed... I don't use Outlook any more anyway....
but I have to say that my experience with Preview 1 was the worst Ive ever had with any beta product. Well you take the risk I suppose, by using beta software, but still...
