Microsoft Reissues DirectX 9 Update

By Nate Mook | Published March 25, 2003, 7:03 AM

UPDATED Microsoft has released DirectX 9.0a for a second time, after it pulled the update due to a problem with ATI graphics cards. Most notably corrected in version 9.0a is an issue that caused MSN Messenger to malfunction when DirectX 9 was installed.

The initial DirectX 9.0a release was incompatible with ATI Catalyst 03.1 drivers, still in use by many gamers, according to Microsoft.

DirectX 9.0 made its debut last December featuring improved performance and security, along with a new high-level shader language designed to simplify development. However, graphics chipsets and games have only recently begun to take advantage of the DirectX 9 APIs.

Microsoft has updated the DirectX Web site with news of the release, and version 9.0a is available for download via Web installer. Microsoft notes the release also corrects problems with some multiplayer games and resolves other minor bugs.

Like the last guy wrote below, I can't capture any video using my ATI All in Wonder card. My trouble report to ATI resulted in the same links to their FAQ and website help (which I had exhausted before asking them for help). No matter what setup mode (avi, wmv, vcr, mpg) I use, capture starts (most of the time) then stopy after from a couple os seconds to a minute or so. ATI thinks it is still capturing (the "captured" time keeps counting up, but it is not. I have a fresh (fully updated) copy of XP including DX9 (9a isn't available just now when I checked), ATI AIW Catalyst 3.2 (inclusing ATI TV WDM capture, control panel and multi-media center). My machine isn't the problem as capture has worked impecably in earlier versions.

Can anyone offer insight into this? Should I just wait for MS and or ATI to work this out?

Thanks,

Is this only a problem with AIW cards? I have an ATI Rage Pro installed as a secondary card and installed the DX 9a update posted the other day, and I haven't noticed any problems. But, I only use it for 2-d desktop work....my nvidia card on agp is used for all my 3-d stuff & gaming.

Wow, I can finally put my 8500 dv back in, I am so excited before DX 9, It ran everything max res and max detail, after DX9, it dropped so bad that my games lagged so bad I couldn't stand playing them, so I stuck a card I used before in and it started it so much better. So i have been using that for 6-8 months now. I am so happy.

I am glad to see that this update came out. I have an ATI AIW 7500. I had just reinstalled Windows 2000 and decided to install DX9 and the newest catalyst drivers. After that, my TV capture would not work. I always leave contacting support as the last result, but after I tried everything I could think of, I emailed ATI, and got the lamest canned response that I have ever seen. It was just a set of links to their basic installation. I even took the time to email them my whole sysinfo about my box and all the details. No wonder end users lose their minds, you have to be quite skilled with PC's to be able to solve half the problems that arise. Since tech support for most of these companies are a joke. I can say that since I work in tech support. Heheh...

Microsoft just cant make their minds up on what issues/bugs they want to resolve in DirectX or on any other product software update for that matter!

It's not Microsoft's fault. ATI's card's use DirectX, it's not DirectX's fault- it's because ATI makes crappy drivers.

Thanks for the update. I downloaded the revised websetup and installed it over the one I installed yesterday. Must have been some minor glitch.

"being modest"????

So they aren't advertising that their main game related product has been filled with bugs that broke even their own software... I don't quite think thats being modest.
