I have always been a PS person but recently i have also wanted to setup a Media Center, to stream movies from my server to the Home Theatre.
Seems to me if the XBox 360 can connect to Windows networks, play digital media, games and DVDs all with a remote and wireless access, why buy a Media Center for $800+ when the XBOX will do it all for less.
Will be interesting to see how integrated the XBOX is.....cant wait

I'm not really impressed.. i mean sure 3 cpus.. almost 10ghz.. ooh.. nice.. hype..etc..
but i saw some of the clips of Xbox 360 games.. and the graphics looks like ud expect from next generation graphics.. i.e. R520 by ati and G70 by nVidia.. but nothing more.. the fact that its HDTV res isnt really impressive either since the 1600x1200 rez many gamers can already play with highend pc's play is like 1.92 million pixels but hdtv 1920x1080 is like 2.07million pixels.. very little diffrence really and with the new cards coming out in a couple of months they will be neck and neck graphically.. and a PC can do that with what.. a third the Ggz in cpu speed.. so what will the remaining 6 Ghz actually be used for?.. pretty interface?..
I admit tho i saw some alledged footage of a PS3 game.. Dark Sector.. and had the same feeling.. graphics looks just like id expect from next gen graphics cards.. but didnt really see anything that showed off the 12Ghz power of the 4x4Ghz cell cpus..
The only thing that MAY impress me is the price.. but ofcourse living in europe it will prolly be 2-3 times that of the US anyway and completely unimpressive..
Guess we'll just have to wait a bit..heh

This statement is complete garbage.

That's because you are comparing a PC to a TV dork. You have to compare console to console. If you have a big screen tv at home and run a console at NTSC all it does is get stretched super big... but if you have a HDtv and run a console at 1080 it's going to be crisper than your toast in the morning. Also, if you run a 1080 system on a regular tv you're not going to benifit from the HD at all because you're limitation is your crappy tv.
Also, I don't care if you have 50 procs in these things. The CPU will NOT make the graphis better. When will people learn that. Games are REAL TIME and damn near everything you see on screen is being calculated on the GPU. If they threw a Quadro 4400 in the 360, THEN you would have a freaking gaming system. Not that that would ever happen though. :)
.That is all.

Any idea whether youw ill be able to play xbox [1] games on the 360?

Well I'm hearing that it wont be backwards compatible but if it is that will be awesome one other thing is that even though the controllers are wireless people say oh no batteries batteries batteries its a RECHARGEABLE BATTERY AND IT LASTS FOR 40 HOURS!!!! thats right you heard it its 40 HOURS OF TOTAL WIRELESS GAMEPLAY

Right out of the Box!
Has anyone heard the suggested price? Or if it will be offered with a game or not?

Is this console can play current XBox games? Or no backward-compatibility?
Anyway, one thing that I like about this console is wireless controllers. No more wires, and can play literally across the living room in front of that bad-ass projection TV of mine. If the controllers use RFID technology, no battery will be required.

I hope the controllers are not battery, because that would be the only deterrent to buying the system. I can't wait!
Then to see what sony will combat with on the new PS3 and the CELL technology! Gamers beware! It will be great to see these two companies go at it. I don't care to even consider/decide on which one is better - stupid argument. I just think that the games will be out of this world!
I will gladly own them both.
IMO ... Not knowing the particulars of what Sony has in store and the price they are going to ask, it could work to the consumer's benefit. I am glad to move away from the PC with most games and look forward to this portable device(both Xbox and PS) PC Gaming is very expensive. Games and hardware companies are raising the machine requirements and price constantly. Consoles stay around longer.
In any event, I will gladly purchase both(Xbox and PS3)
Price???? I can see it going for $300 easily. Still not bad compared to the cost of a PC with similar specs.

It's fairly easy to emulate x86 on PPC architecture (Microsoft already does it fairly well with their Mac version of Virtual PC) so I expect we'll be able to play old Xbox games on Xbox 360 but who would want to? Within 10 seconds after they get their hands on an Xbox 360, most gamers I know would be downright ashamed to admit that they own any "OLD" junk. We're not talking about white-haired accountants sitting around talking about how Excel 95 is still plenty good because it beats the heck out of the abacus and slide rule they remember using. We're talking about GAMERS! These are the people who will have their HDTV set up and waiting. Who's going to fire up an old Xbox game on an HDTV screen and tolerate it for more than a few seconds?

The Xbox could have a 10Ghz processor and the best graphics ever and you'd still say the same thing. Some people hated the Xbox 360 before they even saw it. At least wait a little longer, you don't even give it a chance. The system stats are very impressive. 3.2Ghz processor, 512MB GDDR3, 500Mhz graphics. "Just make a PC?" No one is forcing you to buy it. If you don't like it, don't buy it. No matter what Xbox did, there will always be people to say bad things to say about it.

Actually, the specs say "Three symmetrical cores running at 3.2 GHz each". With processors running at those speeds these games better be pushing out some seriously rendered graphics.

Well said. The "I live in my mommy's basement" Linuxoles will come out of their dungeons and bash "M$ windoze and eggbocks". Irony is, many of the real Linux geeks actually buy XBoxes and mod them for Linux, which contributes to console sales and eventually game sales.

So very unimpressed!!! Um.. is that a PC... Optional devices + console = failure.. it's a developers nightmare and why PC gaming is good at what it does and why consoles are good at what they do... i like buying consoles once every 5 years and not doing much with it after that... micrsoft has an optional hardrive, optional wifi adapter... camera's... come on here... why type of memory card will they use..
mtv event made me want to throw up... i couldn't watch it.. made me realize how much i hated that channel.. stick with the music MTV... someone needs to start a xbox360 sucks blog.
microsoft really does want to own the world.

i suppose that since you know what a developer's nightmare is... that you are currently developing software for the xbox 360?

I have to agree with that 'just make a PC' remark. This thing is way more powerful than any PC I can buy short of a very beefy server/high-end workstation. How can they afford to sell something like this for $300 when a comperable PC would run you $3500..IF you could do the legwork needed to build such a beast? Bottom line: stop screwing around with this proprietary, world-domination garbage and create a new, powerful, reliable PC platform. And no excuses for not making it affordable - thats OBVIOUSLY not a problem for M$.

It sounds good, but hardware doesn't always make and break a system. Last time, Playstation 2 had such a better library of games that I was very satisfied with it. Last time the PS2 had a 1 year lead over the XBox, now its reverse. I'd really like to hear about the PS3 specs before I make a decision
Score: 0
How can they afford to sell this for $300 dollars? Very easy. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo have always lost money on the consoles they build because they make it up 100 times with the liscencing for games.
Score: 0
Consoles are more easily programmed because there's only one set of hardware you have to make sure the system is compatible with. That's not changing.
Score: 0
Are you a developer for Xbox? I would bet money that you aren't. Do you know what code the games are written in? I would bet money that you don't. I should also mention that there is only one hardware platform to support, therefore making it a thousand times easier to program for than a PC. So why don't you stick to something that you do know, like b****ing that this is a PC and not a game console. You MS bashers are seriously idiots. Microsoft could cure Cancer and you guys would complain about it...

@ MicroSoft fanboys : Good on ya for liking a company. Supporting a company's products provides revenue to make future innovations. Keep fueling my economy!
@ MicroSoft loathers : Good on ya for hating a company. Finding faults and looking for problems brings out the flaws that need to be corrected and provides room for competition. Keep fueling my economy as well!
@ Both parties : Try seeing eachother as benefits and not as a problem in the system.
ON TOPIC : Looks to be a powerful console, but I'm interested in how they acheived a tri-symmetric cpu architecture. Obviously, they're custom cpus, but typically, pairs are more efficient if not much much easier to architect.

Seeing as they're dual core tho, doesn't this make it like managing 3 pairs?

uses IBM Power PC chips

3 dual _threaded_ cores. But that doesn't have much more to do with interface than what the cpu's internally will accept as load.
So how are they combining the three cores onto one chip, is my question. Are they running in a hierarchical line or does each chip run independent of the other two.
Two cores or two cpus is simple(r) to communicate with and receive from. But that third core might serve a specific function like the prototype cell processor machines...
