Microsoft Update Service Pack Coming
By Nate Mook | Published December 28, 2005, 2:00 PM
Microsoft is preparing to beta test the first service pack for Microsoft Update, the Redmond company's new all-in-one Web site for downloading updates to many of its products, including Windows and Office. The beta program will begin early next year, but little is known about what changes SP1 will bring.
"To recap, the Microsoft Update (MU) Beta Program ended earlier this year and the MU and Windows Update v6 (WU) sites are operational. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you who participated. Your feedback on troubleshooting, site usability and general fit and finish (to name a few) helped to deliver WU/MU on time and at high quality," beta coordinator Eric Brodish wrote in an e-mail to testers.
The initial word is that WUSP2 will validate the OS hardware hash to the "Last Activated" hardware hash...no match...you get deactivated. Also as long as IE7 stays beta which will be tennatively included in the new WU the status must stay BETA.

As for the requiring a reboot, it does sugest that you close any open applications before running it, so if you have something open that its trying to update, thats on you.
Also, it wouldn't be too hard for you to actually configure this to match what you want instead of leaving the defaults set. When you first install XP or 2003 it asks you, and also on the first visit to the website it gives you the options to set this up.

I'm informed enough to know NOT to allow Updates to be automatically installed - but rather only automatically downloaded. I still think it is inappropriate for Windows to restart a computer forcefully regardless of your settings. The fact that a harddrive can DIE any SECOND does not mean I can allow MS to format my drive at random times, now does it? Similarly, even if something is a bad idea (leaving windows open in middle of something) it doesn't mean you have to "stick it" to the users who do it. Some may actually have APCs and had to run in a hurry - who knows.

SQL Server is database software that is used by about 80% of the all companies in the world. It's not a programming tool. Anyways, MS originally said that SQL would be included on the Microsoft update site, but didn't release it with the beta or when they went live. All that is working right now is Windows, Office and Exchange server as far as I can tell. Anyone else have a clue?

|Dude, I know what SQL is. Its a PROGRAMMING tool. ITs an IT function. Its a backend server, I am a SQL / Access Admin, I know what it is, I don't need a lesson in what YOU think it should be called. Its for programmers, and its utilized to perform functions that support programs, its a backend tool.
And its difficult to include a tool that requires updates, when going from SP3 to SP4 in SQL 2000 could affect hundreds and thousands of apps. An automatic update could conceivable break other applications that require interaction with SQL desktop and server, so I highly doubt MS would automatically provide such an update for a tool that could be easily crippled.
That would become a serious issue for those 80% users worldwide, if all of a sudden the consultants started running a different version of the database than what was originally deployed. It happened to our company and several of our clients already, because people upgraded to the new SP, beyond what was intended.
And why is SQL included with a developers platform and even by MS definition "Close integration with Microsoft Visual Studio, the Microsoft Office System, and a suite of new development tools, including the Business Intelligence Development Studio, sets SQL Server 2005 apart" its part of a developers suite.
Developers / Programmers, they are similar terms.

Updating to the latest SQL service pack and patch level is critical in the prevention of worms like SQL Slammer. That's what the dev stage prod model was developed for, 0-day patch dev & stage then when tested, patch production.
It's irresponsible to not patch SQL Server just as it would be to not patch Windows.
Just because Visual Studio integrates with SQL server, that doesn't make SQL server a development tool.

SQL is a database server application. It serves no other purpose than storing data until adeveloper programming tool such as Visual Studio or Web Development tool is used to manipulate that data.
Furthermore, it is not at all difficult to include sp's via updates... after all Service Pack 1 for Server 2003 and Service Pack 2 for XP are provided.

|I think rijp's right. SQL Server 2000 SP4 cannot be automated because of the additional checks it does. If you have a null password it won't install without switches. There's no way to push that out and have a validated SP4 install where the password isn't null: it REQUIRES user input.
Perhaps SQL 2005 will allow this, as it also by default requires a certain level of security to be installed, but it's fragile: You don't roll out SP's to databases automatically like you might an OS or application. It's far too risky to data loss.

|SQL is designed for a specific, limited purpose — querying data contained in a relational database. As such, it is a set-based, declarative computer language rather than an imperative language such as C or BASIC which, being programming languages, are designed to solve a much broader set of problems. Language extensions such as PL/SQL are designed to address this by turning SQL into a full-fledged programming language while maintaining the advantages of SQL. Another approach is to allow programming language code to be embedded in and interact with the database. For example, Oracle and others include Java in the database, while PostgreSQL allows functions to be written in a wide variety of languages, including Perl, Tcl, and C.
One joke about SQL is that "SQL is neither structured, nor is it limited to queries, nor is it a language." This is founded on the notion that pure SQL is not a classic programming language since it is not Turing-complete. On the other hand, however, it is a programming language because it has a grammar, syntax, and programmatic purpose and intent. The joke recalls Voltaire's remark that the Holy Roman Empire was "neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire."

Anyways, since I can write a document in Word to go along with my application i wrote, is it a programming tool also? What about notepad, since I wrote HTML code in it?
Also, many applications will start coming with SQL2k5 lite, and Dell and other companies ship machines with it installed to monitor configuration and other stuff, so having it on WU would be a good idea. SQL2k5 just reciently went RTM so it may be a while before we see the fixes show up on it, but Exchange 2k3 already has them on the site.
Since the syntax of TSQL is not changing from a minor revision, unless it is to fix a security hole, this shouldn't be an issue. Anyways, in a corporate environment there should be other ways then letting the servers go to the site and update themselves. SMS or WSUS are just two examples of this.
