Microsoft Updates HD DVD Player
By the Betanews Staff | Published May 15, 2007, 2:21 PM
In conjunction with the recent Spring 2007 update for the Xbox 360 and the new "Elite" version of Microsoft's console that adds HDMI output, the Redmond company has issued a firmware update for its HD DVD player add-on. New is full 1080p high-definition support.
Microsoft has added the option to select audio output, improved parental controls, as well as bolstering HD DVD network support and compatibility with HD DVD titles. The update will be delivered automatically when a user is logged into Xbox Live and plays a movie, or it can be downloaded manually from Xbox.com later this week.
More BD viral marketing, I see. Typical of Sony. Face it all you BD fangirls, there is no Blu-ray add-on coming for the XBox 360. According to Microsoft:
"It is a totally bogus report. The original site claimed the "news" came from Associated Press. So we checked with them and they said that they had never written such an article. And they were not pleased at all that their name was used this way.
So let me be very, very clear on this. There is not a sole at Microsoft that is even thinking of building a BD player for 360, let alone people actively working on it. We are behind HD DVD as optical formats go. And that is the end of the story."

I think MS should have made an Xbox 360 Elite with the HD-DVD built in. I hate having to buy add-ons and then the ugly thing is taking up space.
I think if anything MS should make a combo HD-DVD /Blueray drive for the 360. I still think thats the way its going to end up in the end. Neither Blueray or HD-DVD will win, they'll just merge the technologies.

Have any of you guys ever heard of "checking directly with the source"?
I know, you don't speak Japanese ... well, me neither ... Babelfish to the rescue!!!!
Yes, computer translation sucks (big time) but, hey!, at least it sounds funny ... :D

For those who don't want to hurt their eyes reading the unreadable computer translation, here are a few alternative translations to consider:

Game over for the HD-DUD add-on...
XBox360 Blu-Ray addon by Xmas? HD-DUD outlooking is bleak?
http://uk.gizmodo.com/20...o_get_bluray_drive.html
Peter Moore, Xbox corporate VP of worldwide marketing and publishing, and he said that: "the Xbox 360 could have an add-on Blu-ray drive by Christmas, similar to the add-on HD DVD drive"
[Peter]"Moore now thinks that the chances of HD DVD becoming the winning HD standard are looking ‘bleak’". Oh dear....
When the main backers of HD-DVD start talking about Blu-Ray, the game really is over..

Is it going to be the shape of a 404 error?

Typical Sony idiot. Post random BS all over the place about how HD-DVD is dead without backing it up with any facts. It's like wiping before you poop, completing pointless.

It's a shame BetaNews doesn't support Digg-style voting. If it did, it's likely I'd never have to read your fanboy bulls*** ever again, Steve.

It was inevitable, no studio support for HD-DVD (aside from Universal who are funded by Toshiba to support it)..
With only Toshiba currently producing hardware, HD-DVD is a one company outfit, and even Microsoft are getting cold feet and now want to be part of Blu-Ray..
Oh dear... That expensive 360 add-on HD-DVD is now as obsolete as the console it connects to..

"XBox360 Blu-Ray addon by Xmas?"
- FFS, you Sony drones will clutch at and try and spread any old BS, won't you?
Go back to the original interview source and stop sucking up the Sony fanzine/site BS.
"Can make a BluRay addon"! for the Sony liars & deluded fools = "BluRay is coming for xmas"
For reference, here's an Ars article to explain (and specifically mentioning the ITmedia interview that all these other links do)

Finally here's the ITmedia article itself, with a pretty bad automated japanese -> english translation.
You can still make out enough to determine that Moore never says they are making such a drive, just that they could.

Hmmmm, then why are there more HD DVD titles announced and HD DVD exclusives so far this year than there are Blu-ray and Blu-ray exclusives?
Btw, gonna go and pop in The Matrix Trilogy on HD DVD. Reviewers are giving this one 10/10 for both picture quality AND audio quality. YES!! :)

What's the point Steve?
I already proved it was a typical BD fanboy lie that there was just Universal for HD DVD.
I'm not going to spoonfeed you the rest.
But as always thanks for high-lighting just how poorly & how little you know about the subject
(that you, like a few others, can be relied upon to spout endless lies, exaggeration & general one-sided sh*te about every time the subject comes up here).

its good that they are .. now supporting full 1080p its not like that should have been supported from a hd add-on from the beginning.
Score: 0
That article is misleading, because they have been supporting 1080p ever since it came out.
Score: 0
Use the XBox 360 HD DVD add-on with a decent & recent PC and all those supposed 'limitations' disappear.
1080p with Dolby HD sound etc etc via HDMI 1.3a if you're graphics card is recent enough.
