Microsoft Updates Windows Media 9 Series Beta

By Nate Mook | Published October 11, 2002, 7:36 AM

Microsoft this week released an updated beta build of Windows Media Player 9 Series to Technical Preview participants. The new build, numbered 2903, features a completely revamped setup along with numerous bug fixes.

The default "Corona" skin has been updated and is now resizable according to beta testers. In addition, a sleek new skin dubbed "Quicksilver" is available for Windows XP users.

"We have fixed numerous bugs since the last beta refresh (build 2800). We encourage everyone --all web developers, ISVs, ICPs, etc...-- to install and provide feedback as we work towards our final release of Windows Media Player 9 Series," beta coordinators wrote in an e-mail to members of the Corona Technical Preview.

The Windows Media Player 9 Series setup now utilizes a Windows XP-style interface that allows a user to optionally configure many of the player's preferences. A special emphasis has been placed on privacy, with a two-tabbed screen providing descriptions of what data is exchanged over the Internet and a copy of Microsoft's privacy statement.

A public beta of Windows Media 9 Series, code-named Corona, was launched at a star-studded event in Los Angeles on September 4. Microsoft subsequently released a beta refresh build of Windows Media Player 9 Series on September 24 to primarily fix firewall connectivity issues.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this s***PIECE of a mediaplayer I´m using Windows ME. I have tried to ask microsoft but can´t find any information I think microsoft too, don´t know how to uninstall this s***piece. I have also tried to look for info on WindowsMedia.com but "no cigar". I´m so tired of Microsoft and all their updating hell caused by badly programmed software and second hand programmers. I can only say one thing "MICROSOFT I REALLY HATE YOU AND ALL WHAT YOU STAND FOR".

Well, the easiest and most complete way to remove it would be to restore from the backup of your system that you made before installing a beta version of an OS component.

You did make a backup first like the installation instructions said to? Right?

As always, if you were foolish enough to ignore the warnings in the installation instructions then you deserve whatever happens to you.

With Windows M.E If you want to uninstal Media Player 9 & were previously running an older version of media player, simply do a system restore to a point before you instaled Media Player 9. At least thats what it says on the release notes for Media Player 9.

First, you need to learn to read and write.

Then, you need to actually learn how to think intelligently for a second.

WM9 is in beta, most products don't support it betcause they were made before WM9, and thus, it is impossible to support it.

You won't use MSN Messenger because it has a security hole.... I hate to tell you this, but every application has some security hole in it, it's just a matter of being discovered (AOLIM alone is probably the biggest hole in existance).

Sorry that is the way if feel. I'm mad as hell at them I just lost a Years work and I don't care if it is a beta or not. I beta tested for Windows XP and the team we had came out a told us the truth. Media 9 was release before it such have. Yes there is a lot of bugs in it, There is also some security flaws in it too.

Sorry, I don't think Microsoft would have Cletus the Slackjawed Yokel test their products.

How is it that you could have possibly lost a years worth of work on a product that has been in beta for a matter of months?

Lost years of work? Do you even read license agreements and readme.txts of beta applications? They state clearly and visible that you should NOT install them on production machines. If a beta made you lost lots of data, it's clearly YOUR fault.

new build works like a charm. even fixed the bug that was keeping me from installing it on my main machine. The bug where the seek bar would stop working on some files, which made it impossible to seek. This is by far the best version of WiMP ever.

as far as the player itself is concerned, I am not going to install the beta. who knows, what happens. I install it, and then win won't start. no, thanx, I wait till the final comes out. esp. because people report that it's still slow. so what would I win? player 7 was slow on win98, 8 was slow on winxp, and 9 is slow too. these ph***ing players need 10 seconds to start and eat up all resources of my computer, my apache and IIS servers together need less resources. MS thinks we all have pentium 4 processors with 512 mbs ram. no, we don't. not everybody got as much money as Billy. Maybe Gates should test his player on an old computer so that he sees how damn slow it is

Takes exactly 2 seconds to start and be ready here.

Opens up in just a few seconds for me as well @ 400 mhtz and 384 megs RAM. You can't beat the ease and convenience of the playlists and menus on WMP which is why a MS hater like me still uses it as my default media player. The seek bar thing is definitely fixed now, but for some reason when I play an album or playlist it won't automatically go to the next song when one is done without a lot of fussing around. Also, it takes foreeeeveeeeer to add songs to the library, and if I want to add a folder I'd better make sure I don't need my computer for the next ten minutes. Don't know where this problem came from, since it wasn't there in previous betas. Still a fine program but still much buggier than previous WMPs. And no, you still can't uninstall it - you have to use system restore.

This is still bloated as hell. Loads slowly and works slowly and uses too much resources. And it still looks ugly. They still don't support Ogg Vorbis which is the real future audio format. Back to Winamp 2.x and ZoomPlayer/BSPlayer.

Score: 0

I agree with you that ogg is the future of the music ! i prefer my old Mplay 6.4 with a lot of codes :)

Score: 0

Bloated implies that it's large without substance. That's not the case at all. I have over 60 gigs of music online which is about 1000 albums by almost 200 artists. No other player has a media library that works as good as wmp. Crative's PlayCenter 3.0 is good, but still doesn't work as easily and quick as wmp.

Winamp was a good player like 2 years ago. It's the AOL of media players, both in ownership and everyother sense.

Who cares about resources, 256MB of DDR is like 45$. (pricewatch.com).

Slow? What in thee blue hell are you talking about?

5 seconds to launch on a Pentium 2 350Mhz PC with 512 MB Ram. Gee, yeah, that's really slow.

Compare it to 15 seconds on Winamp3 on the same PC.

Compare it to 6 seconds for Winamp2 on the same PC.

Damn man, it ain't slow unless you're using a 486.

Score: 0

Athlon 1.1 with 448 ram....loads in 3-5 seconds takes up less than 10 megs of ram typically (this is with a music library of 1015 songs). converts my mp3 files to wma when I transfer then to my nomad 2 beautifully. I have yet to try ogg but the new wma variable codec (with DRM turned off) is very impressive. Sill amazes me that a beta like this is still better than a final winamp 3 (don't gimme that BS of still evolving 3 years should have been enough for a stable app.
