Microsoft: XP Service Pack 3 After Vista

By Ed Oswald | Published September 30, 2005, 1:34 PM

A representative of Microsoft's French division told ZDNet France on Friday that the company plans to release a third service pack for the Windows XP operating system. According to Bernard Ourghanlian, technical and security director at Microsoft France, the update is significant and a priority for Microsoft's developers.

Microsoft last updated Windows XP in August 2004, focusing on security issues. The changes came after the company received widespread criticism over the operating system's apparent lax security. No details have been received on the contents of the update, although it may include a version of WinFX being fine-tuned for the now four year-old version of Windows.

Wow. Someone throw this in a social-studies book. I'd love to hear some lively debate about how a article concerning SP3 and Vista deteriorated into a flamewar between France and the USA.

We need more mods. Seriously. This is ridiculous. Some poor sucker is gonna click this link looking for goodies on SP3 and be treated to racial epithets and vulgarity that'd make RockStar developers blush.

It bears repeating:

We need more mods.

Bullsh*t Harvard-speak. Take a gander at MS's dispicable actions in the past and their financial worth as a whole at this moment in time. Triple digit billions. Triple digit. *Triple*. Once one can grasp this, they will understand that it negates and makes little more then useless everything you've just mentioned. No offense to you of course.

These "golden-rules" or large projects don't apply to MS, or rather they don't HAVE to. MS is a company that is constantly liquidating their assets in the name of more golden eggs. Only difference with MS is that once they don't find any golden eggs after killing their goose, they steal eggs from other peoples gooses.

It's all about profit. "

This is one of the most myopic replies I've seen in recent memory. Even more so, it's amusing for its obvious "rah rah fight the power" schtick.

It's blatantly obvious that you've never worked on a large project, let alone a large software project.

Let me spell it out for you:

In order to get a huge project out the door, you set a stake in the ground in terms of deliverables and meet it as best you can. Some things will be lapsed in the interests of getting the project finished on schedule and under budget. Usually (as in this case), the project will meet the vast majority of the established goals and achieve the requisite high quality level. Furthermore, if *another* large project is also underway, resources may be reallocated to that one, resulting in a re-prioritization of deliverables.

What you're seeing here is the result of such a process in action and ALL large initiatives undergo this.

I do hope this educates you.

Apple, on the other hand, does NOT allow open source code integrated with their OS, hence no Shareware programmers, hence no 3rd party apps written, hence, very little software written for the Apple (in comparison to Linux and Windows), thus VERY SMALL MARKET.

A SP is normal, if a company does NOT keep up with bugs and updates, then they will get run over by other companies. So don't go spouting that an SP is bad. Umm.. no. When 2000 came out, inevitably there were programs being written to support XP while it was still in beta. So those programs were optimized to take advantage of the new features. The new features cannot be backwards compatible in a product, UNLESS, it is patched. So XP is out now, Vista is in beta, and there is a new file system coming out.

So XP apps written now will be compatible with Vista, but they can't very well write a program for a product that isn't released yet. Therefore, a Patch is inevitable for XP so Vista Apps and code can be included and they don't drop XP people all together. Since 2000 is no longer officially supported by Microsoft, XP/2003 is their offical OS. Vista is the next stage of progression in the ever changing world of computing. 64-bit, new devices, better memory, so on and so forth.

So its not a ploy as you so inadequately put it, its strategy. They are giving us their plan. SP2 for XP is good. There will be NO major updates for XP, since Vista is on the horizon.

Lest you forget NT had SP6. 2000 had SP5. XP is still only at SP2. I think that speaks volumes for how good Microsoft has been to listen to the developers and with Vista, they will be releasing monthly updates, rather than quarterly, so they can get more frequent input.

Until then, hardware and software hasn't even been finalized for the 64-bit platform yet, even with XP 64-bit. That is simply a recompile to support the 64-bit environment, but its not optimized for it. How many 64-bit games have you seen? Yeah, none.

So yes we will continue to get updates. So quit whining about it. That's why there is "autoupdate".

If every piece of hardware on your machine is on that list, then you should not have problems. If you introduce even a small device, like a USB hub which is NOT on the list, all bets are off.

I would be willing to bet, 99.99% of people that read this forum do NOT check their machines against that list, and you are using drivers which were NOT tested or certified by Microsoft to work. So unexpected drivers leads to unexepected code, which leads to unexpected results, which is probably why Explorer freezes.

There is the people and there is the people's government. So whom do you hate? Do you even know any Frenchman?

You're just one of those millions of foolish guys who are building their "sight" of the world off of second hand information in the "media" and think and feel what they want you to think and feel.

Go on and hate and hate and detest and hate.

What a nice world you are creating with your hate and unqualified "opinions".

I fully support what tipsyboy has written. I would add that I stopped writing in these supposed forums weeks ago (this comment being an exception!) due to the amount of personal abuse and off topic comments. The topic here is supposedly about SP3 so where does all this hatred and personal attacks come from?. It seems to me that if someone listed a program which was the greatest the world had ever seen and the authors paid $1000 to everyone who used it, there would still be complaints, personal attacks and narrow minded cretins who would condemn it.
Why cant they just stay on topic and make remarks which the rest of us would find constructive and useful? I suppose that would be too much to expect.

it';s good to hear that there creating a SP3 pack, i think it's great when they decide to do a service pack, as it gives the developers a great chance at really sorting all the components out in XP, and also introduce features that they should of done before but either never had the time or money, or more to the point never had the no how,

which leads me on to my next point really, a lot of people seem to under estimate the great tasks at programming this OS,

like people wanting certain features in there OS, and think that the security is a joke, well i have to say that with the popularity around XP and the amount of people out there all experienced at there hacking abilities trying to get one over on MS i'm not suprised that security seems to be a joke in XP, but i couldn't agree more, some of the features that have come out in XP (although late) still deserves a lot of credit, ecspecially to the programmers, this stuff is not easy, and the code that they have to deal with is very hard to program, as most of there code is pure assembly it takes a long time for turn around security patches to come out.

my other point i wanted to raise is,do we need the next operating system at the moment, or further to the point what is the next generation OS going to bring to us that XP can't do now, as XP has only just reached (the world has only just reached) the 64 bit stage, and although the cpu companies and MS has a good understanding of the 64 bit world, nearly all software developers have not caught up yet, and more important game developers as i am sure that once they work out how, 64 bit programming will greatly enhance the AI side of things in these games, as AI calculations put a missive strain on even the most advance CPU's avalible,

i just think that the next OS is going to need so much to run it, ecspecially in the graphics department, and i feel that the next OS won't have the same speed benefit that XP braught us. (unless you have a dual cpu or multi cpu)

and just to finish of, some people think that upgrading xp is pointless, to you people you have not got a clue, by fixing and tuning, and updating a product, helps developers come up with new revolution ideas for there next incarnations, as i'm sure a lot of you know that by fixing one thing can sometimes give ideas, and those ideas would of never have come unless that part was fixed first, so i say keep the SP packs coming MS, as there benefitting you too.#

Registered singing off.

Let me see, OS/2, NextOS, BeOS, and so many others have tried and failed. After all the hate surrounding Windows, its a miracle its still around after 26 years in development and managed to fend off pretend companies.

They know what you don't. An OS goes way deeper than just code. Pick up a book about how to create your own operating system, and you will see how much it takes to actually make an OS. Its a lot more difficult than supporting a few drivers.. and releasing service packs.
