Microsoft shows off Windows Mobile update, but not 7.0

Two dozen invited attendees to Microsoft's Mobius event in Amsterdam this week got a first peek at the next update to Windows Mobile. It's not version 7, code-named "Photon," but the reviews are positive. Unfortunately because the presentation was under NDA, little specifics are known at this point.
"Our first impressions: very slick, and has a lot of features that just about any WinMo user will agree is way overdue," wrote Engadget editor Ryan Block. "It will be a free update given to device makers in Q1 2008. We saw it running on current hardware, it looked freaking impressive," remarked Judie Lipsett from Gear Diary. Mobius runs through tomorrow and gives Microsoft, as well as device makers, a chance to get direct feedback from Windows Mobile enthusiasts. The Redmond company paid for attendees' airfare and hotel, along with giving everyone an HTC Touch Dual handset.
I have used Palm OS and Windows Mobile 5, 6, PPC 2002 & 2003 and I must say that Palm OS beats all. I also like the blackbeery.

|WM6 suck. There are too much hype around it. I flashed my Mogul back to WM5 and so happy about it. There are just so much problem with WM6, I am not sure if HTC or MS are the one to blame. Memory leaked is the biggest issue. You soft reset the device and give you like 20 to 25 meg free. Leave the phone on idle for 6 to 12 hours, you have like 5 megs free, and have to soft reset. Battery is another issue, I have the battery hack, and couldn't least a day on light usage. Without battery hack, the battery is at 30 to 40% after 8 hours of idle.
Flashed WM5, and these two issues resolved. Soft reset with 20 meg free, and still have 20 after hours of usage. Battery (with battery hack) after 8 hours of light usage and phone call still have 70 to 80% left. Did I mention that the phone is like 5 times faster?

|I have a BlackJack with WM6 installed, and I don't have any of these problems you're mentioning. My battery life is several days with normal usage, I haven't noticed any memory leaks. It stays pretty constant around the 25MB area when nothing's running. My phone runs MUCH better under WM6, it responds faster, and various programs (especially IE) are snappier and download much quicker.

|if it's so "freakin impressive" why is this not WinMo7?

|6 was unremarkable. In fact I see no reason to update to exchange 2007 until MS improves it's mobile platform.

|Is everyone running this same article? It's not very news worthy without some description of features.

|this news is useless. we know updates and new versions will be released in the future. what we need to know is what are new features and when they will be available.
