Microsoft to Demo Gaming Controller

By David Worthington | Published May 11, 2005, 3:04 PM

At E3, Microsoft will unveil a mock-up of a universal gaming controller that works with both the Xbox 360 and PCs. The controller, says Microsoft, will provide a consistent experience across all Microsoft gaming platforms. Also at E3, Microsoft will showcase more than two dozen upcoming games for Windows, including Battlefield 2, Age of Empires III and Bratz.

"The universal gaming controller will provide a Windows controller standard that helps game developers bring different genres -- such as racing, sports and action/adventure -- to the Windows platform more easily," said Chris Donahue, group manager of Windows Graphics and Gaming Technologies at Microsoft. "Gamers will have more playing options with a familiar, versatile and well-designed gamepad-style controller."

PC does NOT equal microsoft. PC equals IBM Compatible pc's on which you can run ms operating systems, linux operating systems, BeOS, OS/2 Warp, and for that matter TSXOS (uber rare, was around for a few years back in the 80's - a dos based multitasking os).

and what the h*&^??? hardware is designed around hardware, not bill gates' overinflated ego :)

I think when they say "Microsoft platforms" they mean the OS's like Windows 98, 2000 and XP.

This is not some controller that will work on Xbox 360 and Longhorn, this *IS* the xbox 360 controller and it will also work with longhorn.

I think this is great, not only will PC gamers get the best controller ever built (design and comfort-wise), but console ports will now become more easily playable on the PC. (example? try playing splinter cell on the PC -- it's just so much better with a controller)

Since when is Splinter Cell better with a controller? I'm sorry, but I find playing FPP/TPP games with a keyboard/mouse way more accurate. But then again, to each his own.

Are you kidding? You can't aim for sh!t on a controller. You can't comfortably play anything faster then Mario on a controller. I've tried to play a bunch of games on my PC using a controller, and its so much easier with a mouse. Racing games are pretty much the only thing controller is good for.

Yet another crappy microsoft product. Id bet any money the controller will randomly crash.

I love people who criticize things they've yet to use or even see. Good job buddy, keep up the good work.

Umm....I'm no ms fanboy but my MS mouse and Keyboard work flawlessly. Why the hate?

I figure you are one of the people that are just in the flock of MS haters. But only once have I had an MS OS crash on me randomly, and that was with Windows 98. I have XP and it does work flawlessly, and as the guy said, my mouse works flawlessly.

Maybe if you had support for your argument, instead of just complain to look like you know what you are talking about, then your point would be well taken.

It's cool to hate MS or any other successful company/person right?

and maybe if you had been running a QUALITY operating system you would see how poorly windows really does stand up :)

I can understand how some don't like Microsoft... but statements like the one about the controller lockups are really ridiculous. If you want to hate Microsoft, at least stick to an argument that is rational. Microsoft hardware has always been reasonably good. Can't say that I've ever had a regular Xbox controller lock up.

As for the Microsoft platform--I suspect Microsoft meant they were aiming it for the Microsoft OS--I suspect you'll have to look elsewhere to find a driver to make it work on Linux or Macs (err... or should I say Mac OS to not further piss of those sensitive to lumping hardware with the vast majority of OS software?) or whatever else it has hardware compatibility with. Is it supposed to be Bluetooth or need a usb dongle on the pc or what?

Used Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows XP, and Windows XP is not that poor. Still better than Linux though for desktop.

i'd bet you would have to activate it online before using it too :)

MS Hardware good? The XBox DVD drives have some of the worst track records in history, and coupled with their 3-month warranty, you're pretty much screwed. I have replaced my drive twice. First with another original OEM (with failed
