Microsoft's GarageBand called Monaco
By Nate Mook | Published April 10, 2006, 1:00 PM
Taking a page from Apple's playbook, Microsoft is preparing a new application for creating music in the same vein as GarageBand for Mac OS X, according to the Microsoft Watch newsletter. The program, code-named Monaco, would be designed specifically for Windows Vista and take advantage of the operating system's Avalon user interface framework.
Sources say Monaco is targeting a new generation of content-creating consumers that Apple has attracted through its iLife suite. However, it's not clear how Microsoft will release Monaco -- whether it will be bundled with Vista or offered as a download like Microsoft Max. Microsoft Watch reports that the program will also take advantage of new search technology to locate audio clips.
If Robert Fripp is involved with this project as well, it most definitely will not suck.

|So Microsoft is just talking about creating a new application and the Apple and Linux trolls are already claiming it sucks and will use too much resources...that's not typical at all (complete sarcasm there)!
Score: 0
|They do that because they're probably right. MS apps have always sucked, they suck now, and there's no reason to assume this one will not suck. This is just a preemptive strike to prevent people from being disappointed by MS sucking again. I'll add some:
Monaco will suck!

|Wow. You're sad. Do you get paid for anti-Microsoft campaigning?

|I can imagine that to do any multimedia authoring on Vista will only push the already steep hardware bar higher. You'll probably need 4GB RAM and 1Tb hard drive to juggle all this and play games, surf the net, etc. Especially if you want to see Aero Glass bells-n-whistles.

|You're imagination has takenb you for quite a spin.
Thank God, for the rest of us, it's just your imagination.
I mean, you're really not that clueless, are you?

Besides marketing and Avalon, one of the reaons they're targeting Vista is that they completely re-wrote the audio stack.
...Not to mention the information widely available, even on BN regarding Vista's requirements...even for Aero.

|I'll never understand their product naming. Monaco?
...perhaps I'm just not with the scene, but there's got to be something more intuitive than "Monaco".

|Actually, I am looking forward to the new audio code. Especially the individual amplitudes for each application.
This is probably indeed to "flex the muscles" of the audio engine, and a good idea. It's not ever intended to be Audition or Sonar...
