Microsoft's Xbox Hacking Fix Backfires
By the Betanews Staff | Published November 3, 2006, 3:36 PM
With the Fall software update for the Xbox 360, a few gamers got an unexpected surprise along with 1080p support - an error code. The message "ERROR CODE E71" has appeared on approximately one percent of all consoles, essentially preventing Xbox Live use or gameplay. Microsoft has acknowledged the error, which seems to be caused by the company's attempts to prevent hacking of the console.
However, it also seems to affect those who may have had repairs done to their systems, which would require possible modifications. At least one user to the 1up.com gaming site reported that he had just received his console back and downloaded the update only to receive the error code. Microsoft is working to ensure the issue does not affect additional consoles.
i hope the expensive of having to fix these makes up for the gained profits of stopping a hack..
problem is tho, not all xboxes are the same exact hardware are they?

|Microsoft is a bunch of idiots too. I hope this stupid update to appease the idiots who only buy products that contain buzzwords completely backfires.
You don't need this update for any reason other that for MS to cram more control into your console.

|The buzzword you refer to is 1080P?
Why blame Microsoft? Blame Sony for this one. Microsoft is simply trying to level the playing field for users who don't have a clue and listen to whatever Sony tells them.

Now, you show me one TV that displays 1080p at 24 frames per second on the actual screen and I will buy it for you. All 1080p/24 signals are converted to 1080i/30 on all sets as of right now.

|Neither is true! But there are many that can inverse-telecine the 1080i, get the 24p out of it, and display it in 1080p (60p with progressive 2:3). The TV obviously does not scan at 24p! Duh!

but, there ARE tv's capable of 1920x1080p.

We'll see if the PS3 makes free worth it.
And if by free you are talking PC games, that's fine and totally different.

|Ps3 wont be free, research a little.
And I'm not arguing that Live isnt worht it for $50 a year. I'm just saying I'd rather have free games vs the option of playing on Live.

|PS3 will likely have some free games - but I agree - over all it will probably cost more then live. Problem for someone interested in it right now though is that there really is no way to know for sure what online games may cost you.
So where do you get the free online gaming? PC Gaming?

|you don't have to pay for xbox live either if your goal to play online for free. ever heard of X-Kai? while it is not 100% xbox live substitution it is still a legal way to play online. it works for PS2 also, although i'm not sure how many PS2 games uspport system link

|X-Kai. if you have home network established (with xbox or PS on it, obviously) you run a x kai server on your pc - the software gives you visibility what games are been played at the moment. if you see the game you would like to play you start it on your box and chose multiplayer->system link . the PC will tunnel you to the game.
for this to work you have to have Kai client running on your modded xbox and the game obviously needs to support system link gaming
my explanation obviously sucks, sorry.

|well you asked about free online gaming, i replyed with what i do . for me it doesn't make sence to pay 50 for live since i would not use it that much ( i don't play online often anyways). obviously it is your choice to use it or not and you actually may get more out of "live" service then me.
it does take a bit of effort to install and run X Kai and it is limited to network/system link enabled games. but it is still an option

|I'm one of those unfortunate 1% that got the dreaded "E71" error codes. I just got mine back from repairs because of the 4 red light ring of death and now I've got to send it in AGAIN to fix this issue. Has Microsoft offered a solution for those of us affected without us having to send it in?
Really frustrates me! I just had to wait a couple weeks for the earlier repair and now I'm faced with another couple weeks of waiting. Microsoft needs to get their act together!

Are you saying "What percentage of the 1 percent actually got the error?". If so, please re-read the sentence before I slap you round the face with some common sense.
If you're asking how many people Microsoft intended to get the error, then duh, none.
If it's something else, your sentence was far too ambiguous to understand.

From the article, "Microsoft has acknowledged the error, which seems to be caused by the company's attempts to prevent hacking of the console."

That's a big oops, Microsoft. 1% of 3 million is 30,000, so this isn't a tiny problem. I guess after all the constant blows Sony is taking, Microsoft decided to give Sony a Christmas gift early this year :D

|We'll isn't this going to primary affect people with the firmware hack? If anything, people might have to buy another 360 becuase they were retarded and went on Live in the first place.

Only affects certain configurations. Anyone with the Hitachi drive should be fine.
"We then simply converted his X33.bin to the new X42a.bin (Xtreme v4.2 Fast Boot Mode as Default) and reflashed (and for those that may ask using a VIA 6421L card and Xecuter Connectivity Kit v2 with a seperate Molex PSU (wouldnt work with PC power - had to power up the drive first before PC - of course you could use power from the 360 itself too if you wish)
The Xbox 360 now boots just fine - both offline and on live with originals and backups."
Easy fix.

|I did the upgrade on both of my 360s which both have the latest respected DVD firmware.. Never got an error.. One has Hitachi and the other has Samsung..
Face it... The security on the 360 is just as bogus as the security on XP or Vista. It will be cracked and M$ will never prevent it. They might as well forget about trying to stop those of us with first run consoles and stop it from future made consoles off the line. This would be done by creating a non-flashable DVD firmware. The only thing they could do is burn a key into the drive and that's it.. It might prevent future hacks, but nothing is a guarantee..
As for the E71.. I don't recall seeing people with hacked firmware getting that error. It was the dreaded E66 which was fixed by patching the Samsung Xtreme firmware with the original model # from the orignal stock firmware, which the 360 is now looking for..
I've been seeing the E71 taking out brand new right out of the box 360s... and those that have been recently returned from repair..
