Mobile VoIP network makes a new play for iPhone users

By Michael Hatamoto | Published May 23, 2008, 4:48 PM

Apple iPhone owners now have the ability to make low cost international phone calls using an existing Web-based "Virtual Mobile Network," whose proprietors hope there's a market out there for iPhone users on a budget.

Morodo's MO-Call iPhone users are able to place calls to other phone numbers using the Safari browser. Each international call is redirected through the MO-Call network, eliminating international roaming charges for mobile phone users.

Morodo aims to use the iPhone Mo-Call service as a stepping stone in the company's aim to become a global VoIP service operator. Developed using multiple mobile OS platforms, MO-Call can be used with more than 800 different mobile phones on the market, according to Morodo.

For example, a call originating from a US mobile phone to a mobile phone user in Japan will cost $0.23 per minute, while the same calls through Verizon Wireless cost phone owners $1.62 per minute. But providers such as Verizon Wireless also offer an "International Long Distance Value Plan Per Minute" rate where the call costs $0.19 if a user pays a $3.99 monthly surcharge.

Interested users can sign up directly from their iPhone through this address.

What's the problem with an iPhone user having a budget? It gives you cellphone, PDA, MP3 player, camera and a lot of other stuff (specially if you jailbreak) that you'd have to buy separately otherwise.

VoIP just sweetens the pot even more.

"hope there's a market out there for iPhone users on a budget."

I find this funny. If you buy an iPhone are you really on a budget?

Hopefully this writer has simply made a mistake compared to completely misunderstanding what they're writing.

"Each international call is redirected through the MO-Call network, eliminating international roaming charges for mobile phone users.
this is completely wrong. this would eliminate international long distance charges not roaming charges. if the customer were roaming they would find they would be paying the int'l data roaming charges rather than voice roaming using the safari browser to make the call.
