Mozilla Celebrates 'World Firefox Day'

By Nate Mook | Published July 17, 2006, 12:10 PM

The Mozilla Corporation celebrated "World Firefox Day" on July 15, three years after the formation of the Mozilla Foundation. As part of the festivities, the company is encouraging its fans to get one person to switch to the alternate Web browser, in exchange for being immortalized in the Firefox 2.0 source code.

Individuals will have until September 15 to encourage a friend to switch. Names will be displayed on a digital "Firefox Friends Wall" at Mozilla headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. In addition, the names will be accessible from within Firefox 2.0, due to launch in the fall, although the company has yet to decide the specifics.

This almost makes me want to give up using Firefox on principle.

I would've posted sooner...but I was too busy throwing up.

alrighty mate.
But don't you agree that with this "FireFox Day" they are turning many (fanboys) into some kind geek cultists, that is what i think as i have come across many ppl who are obsessed about firefox.
Opera is my default browser but i like Firefox too and i think that it is already very good and there is no need to do such things.
& source for my post is also reference.com ;).

I try and convince people whenever I can to switch to an alternative browser.

pretty novel idea if you ask me. will it work? will it raise the market share? who knows. is it lame? yes, am I going to participate? yes :) hehe windows is lame. doesnt stop me from using it. it's little whimsical things likke this that earn a special place in my heart, because with all the haters out there, it's nice to see some company taking an active (though totally useless) step in making light of the software wars :)

This is a joke, right? Next they're going to encourage little kids to give away copies of Firefox at the corner lemonade stand and send out Firefox clowns at flea markets!

Holy cow, this is funny. If you like these kind of software-is-religion stunts, then you really should be using a mac. That crowd has the religion angle cornered.

Totally agree with you. Mozilla is trying to emulate Apple in building an FF cult. I think it's going to create new batches of FF fanatics. FF == good. FF fanatics == bad.

Imagine what would happen if Microsoft came up with a "World Windows Day"--there'd be at least 3 times as many people posting here about how stupid it would be--kinda tells a story, don't it?

Oh come now Microsoft wouldn't spend money on something that stupid would they. they've got more important things on their minds like adding a silver theme to Office 2007 and remaking the standard theme in Vista.

Wait a second, what about all these people I switched over to Firefox for the last 5 years as a consultant? Don't I get credit like have my name in white on the lawn of the Firefox building?
