Napster Lays Off 10, Denies Sale Rumors

Napster said late Wednesday that it laid off ten managers worldwide as it combined its Napster subscription service with the Napster.com team. The company took great lengths in public statements to assure that these were not the beginning of a bigger round of layoffs as rumored earlier this month.
"Napster projects its headcount will actually increase over the coming year as our new Napster.com products enter the marketplace. Rumors of major or significant layoffs were misleading and greatly exaggerated, and efforts to sell the company are patently untrue," the company said in a statement. Napster also pointed to its 100 percent revenue growth and 500,000 subscribers as a sign of the company's health.
I can't believe people are dumb enough to "buy" songs with crappy quality (mp3) which are "locked" into a special service. heh... They bascially "rent" the songs. Which is just stupid.
I stay away from such services. I use www.radioIO.com and allofmp3.com, they KNOW that our ears are connected to a brain!

|Allofmp3.com is the best compared to all of those. You can download full MP3 albums for under $2 at at a bitrate of 192kbit/s. And you don't even have to install any software, just download the mp3's.
Plus MP3's will play in all "MP3" players. They also let you choose the quality (bitrate, CBR and VBR) or if you want MP3, WMA, OGG or even lossless Flac and Wav's all without [as in no] DRM. None of those will let you do that.
Otherwise I just buy the old fasioned CD. And that let's me do that same thing (when I rip it). Unless it's Sony's crap DRM'ed CD's then I'll stay away from it.

|How can it be legal for them to be selling at those rates? I took a look at their legal page and it seems that they are based in Russia and are operating under Russian law ... so, does this technically mean that their business is legal in Russia since it's not being moderated?
Common sense and being aware of recent talks by record labels for raising prices would say no.

|The Russian govt said they are legal. But for how long with the RIAA on their backs remains to be seen.
Also I have been using Allofmp3 for about 2 years now and love it.

|Yeah, I also prefer ogg over mp3. Sounds better to me (especially at lower bitretes) and I can fit more on my mp3 player.

|Napster allows thousands of songs a month downloaded to your non-Apple MP3 player, legally, for 14.95 a month. This would cost thousands with Itunes. Power to Napster, Rhapsody, Yahoo! Music Engine(Only 6.95, due to increase soon), Virgin Digital, etc!! My Dell DJ rocks!!

|Napster's inteface blows. Rhapsody's too. Their selection is a *little* better, but all in all, they suck. Especially Rhapsody with all the junk it keeps in your background. Plus to cancel it you have to find the "Hidden" phone number ro cancel.
iTunes' DB is awesome. Plus I can import it from my final scratch right into my sets. Yes, the other ones are less to download, but you get what you pay for.
