New Xbox Experience opens, for some

By Tim Conneally | Published November 18, 2008, 2:02 PM

While the official first day of the New Xbox Experience (NXE) is November 19, users who applied for the preview program are already seeing their updated Xbox interface, new sections, and the Netflix Instant queue with exclusive HD content.

Microsoft unveiled the changes to the Xbox this summer at E3, showing off the ability for users to create custom animated avatars through which to chat or host "Live Parties" where connected users can share games, movies, and photos with up to seven people simultaneously. It also announced that user-developed games would be available in addition to new casual MMOs in "Live Primetime," which was later delayed.

The addition of Netflix streaming movies on demand was also a major announcement at the time, which only got more exciting for users when it was announced that it would also be testing some 300 HD titles that are unavailable to other Netflix subscribers.

Xbox Live's Major Nelson blog announced the early hookup last night.

Nice site, it gave me a popup telling me to download some "codec" via an .exe file, and when I tried to cancel it the thing just kept popping up over and over. I had to ctrl-alt-del and kill my browser from the task manager.

Actually, the information on this site is a little late. Major Nelson had announced the NXE Preview Program on October 24th. Users were greeted with the NXE that weekend.

On November 7th, they decided to do a "Phase 2". Users who originally applied for the NXE Preview Program would be eligible for Phase 2. No new applicants were allowed.

Finally, on November 13th, the third (and final) phase was made allowing over 10,000 original applicants to get the NXE early. Again, there were no new applicants allowed.

Then, finally on November 17th. The remaining applicants were given access to the NXE. As you can see, it was all in stages!

I gained access on November 13th and have enjoyed every minute of it!

I'm not really interested in the Netflix thing, and the new interface hasn't looked very promising to me so far. It's so barren; looks like those gimmicky 3D task switchers that all the cool operating systems use now. Do we really need all that wasted space? I could live with that though, but those childish Wii ripoff avatars just kill it for me. Who asked for that crap? Maybe they're optional but I've about decided to just keep my console unplugged and skip this update.

def a comment from a windows 95 user!! lol come on bro, honestly the netflix thing doesnt appeal to you? HD streaming at no additional cost of having gold acct? the new interface blows away the crappy blades by a long shot... "waisted space"? I think one of the points of the upgrade was so there was more space and they accomplished that.. ur comment was close to retarted. no offense, but i do wish you keep your console unplugged for many years to come!
oh, and i'm not a fanboy, trust me I prefer my ps3 anywayz
