Next round of Microsoft 'Patch Tuesday' addresses Bluetooth problem

By Jacqueline Emigh | Published June 6, 2008, 6:06 PM

On its next "Patch Tuesday," slated for June 10, Microsoft plans to release seven security fixes, including three critical updates.

According to Microsoft's Security Bulletin Advance Notification for June, the fixes will also include three important updates and one classified by Microsoft as moderate.

The three critical updates are aimed at vulnerabilities in Windows -- as well as one in the Internet Explorer (IE) browser -- that permit code execution with the use of DirectX, IE, and Bluetooth.

The browser fix is for IE 5.01 through IE 7 running on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008.

The Bluetooth fix is aimed at vulnerabilities associated with the way the wireless protocol works with various components of Windows XP, Vista, and Server 2003 operating systems.

Aside from those critical updates, the four other updates are also concerned with remote code execution on Windows. And of course, there's the monthly edition of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Users can register now on Microsoft TechNet to take part in a Webcast that will be held on June 11 to answer questions about the new security fixes. After that date, the Webcast will be available on demand.

In regards to not being able too load Service Pack 3 on a HP Computer. Firstly make sure that your not running Norton Anti-Virus, if you are there have been problems reported with installation of SP3. Norton has released a Down-loadable Tool to fix this issue.

Secondly there exists an issue with processor types as well check to see if your running an AMD v.s. Intel processor the code in SP3 sometimes corrupts a file during install on AMD machines as it the service pack was setup primarily for Intel based processors. But the issue has been addressed. Thirdly go over to here and download the Stand Alone Installer and run it instead of trying to download the Service Pack from Windows Update. This version should install for you. Best of Luck.

That should fix your issues.

Isn't bluetooth in and of itself insecure? bluesnarfing, etc? I thought the general consensus is that this is a broken protocol and should be avoided?

Instead of commenting on a page that 1. has nothing to do with your "problem" and 2. that Microsoft aren't going to read, go to the Microsoft newsgroups and post your question there (with a bit more detail).

If you are having problems with SP3, specifically on XP Home, make sure you do the following: 1- BACK UP YOUR DATA!!! 2- shut down your computer and do a cold boot. 3- make sure that ALL RUNNING APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED! Close all of your system tray applications, run task manager and shut down processes running in the background that are "invisable" programs (you'll be surprised what's running). 4- TURN OFF YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE FOR THE INSTALLATION. AV programs are notorious for screwing up service packs. You can be safely assured that MS is not going to install a virus riddled service pack. 5- For good measure, run an anti-virus scan of your system prior to previous steps for good measure. 6- Make sure your drivers are up to date. 7- Make a system restore point prior to running the SP. Follow these steps and you should be able to get a clean installation of SP3. Good luck!
