Nintendo Overtakes Sony in Video Game Revenues

By Ed Oswald | Published October 31, 2007, 2:41 PM

Despite Sony's troubles in selling the PlayStation 3, it was still able to boast the highest software revenues of the big three -- until now.

Data released by iSuppli Tuesday indicates that in the third quarter Nintendo was able to eclipse the long-dominant Sony by some 200 million dollars, posting $1.2 billion in revenues. This was up from $943.6 million in the second quarter, and $611 million a year ago.

On the other hand, Sony remained flat quarter-to-quarter, posting revenues of $1 billion in each. iSuppli says that it expects Nintendo to maintain its dominance on the back of new hardware and software to be released through the holiday season.

"[Nintendo] expects by the end of 2007 to ship about 200 additional titles, adding to the more than 150 games already released, many from outside publishers," iSuppli multimedia research head David Carnvale said, adding the Wii Balance Board and Wii Fit should also provide a boost.

Even with Halo 3 releasing late in the quarter, Microsoft still has a long way to go to catch up to either Sony or Nintendo. The company posted $317.8 million in software revenues, up from $271.9 million in the second quarter.

It should be mentioned, however, that a comparison here is somewhat misleading: both Nintendo and Sony have portable gaming systems which are calculated within their quarterly software revenues, whereas Microsoft does not.

iSuppli said it expects Wii software alone to account for up to $1.1 billion in revenue by the fourth quarter of 2008, with revenues for its DS system reaching $1.2 billion by the same period.

The Wii continues to sell more than any other console. It is the only real next gen console out there. The Wii truely gives you something you did not have before; it is true innovation.

My neighbors just got a Wii at Best Buy. They lucked out big time. They just happened to be there buying a Blu-Ray player and a bunch of Wii's just had gotten delivered. They said people came out of no where and grabbed them all up in like 20 seconds. They managed to snag one.

Good luck getting a Wii for the holidays. I have mine ;)

Oh goody goody!!! You're such a lucky kid!! Do you want a cookie and maybe some milk?

Enjoy playing all those available amazing Wii games that are out! Oh wait what's that...you already beat Metroid? I did too and it's been collecting dust ever since...guess we have to wait for Mario and smash bro's...and then let it collect more dust until...Metroid 4?

Ah well...in the mean time I'll continue playing Halo 3.

Unlike you...I'm not married to a console, my wife made sure of that.:)

Cut the crap they are not that hard to find. I have seen them several times. You pump the thing up like its the next coming when 70% of the already sold units are in the closet already.

Talk about rehashes. :)

Yet it sells how many millions on day one. Your point is weak since it appears that many people love it. Just because it doesn't look like a cartoon on the Wii does not make it a bad game.

It's still hard to find. If you want kick a** qualify, go with a PC. If you want fun, it's the WII.

XBOX and PS as a game console offer nothing different than NES beside better graphic and more buttons. At least with XBOX, you can modded and use it as a media center.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean other people don't. Just like I don't see the joy in driving a car around a circle for hours entertaining. Or taking turns doing magical spells on each other like in Final Fantasy. People have different tastes. Go figure.

The title is a little misleading. The title should include the word 'software', not 'video game'. Saying 'video game' makes it sounds like you're including console hardware revenue too.

So because sony and nintendo have portable systems that is why they make 3x and 4x more in software revenues respectively?
keep feeding the delusion.

Yes, it is. Sony has the PSP and Nintendo has the DS. Both contribute a very significant amount to software sales. Microsoft has nothing to compete here, so it is a valid point.

The split, while not enough to compete, would likely make it much closer than it appears. Stop feeding your own delusions, and support them with facts, please.

And your point? Surely that's microsoft's problem for NOT having anything other than the aging 360 as a revenue stream, where Sony has PS2/PSP/PS3.

Score: 0

Correction, Sony has the PS2/PSP only for revenue.

An aging 360 what a joke. So I guess that makes the DS ancient since I belive that came out before the 360.

"Surely that's microsoft's problem for NOT having anything other than the aging 360 as a revenue stream"

Actually...MS has alot more revenue then both those companies put together...

If you're going to include unrelated sources from Sony, might as well include unrelated revenue from MS...where does Sony stand now??

Score: 0

Nerdy moment here. Technically the DS is *quite* old. Does anyone remember hearing about a 4-button game boy to become the successor to the game boy color? It was known internally as Project Nitro. Well Nintendo took that concept, updated the hardware *slightly* and threw in a second screen. For a bit there, they even brought back the nitro name (http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/497/497843p1.html).

I remember reading that in an EGM article around the end of 02. Oh good times.

You never fail to make me laugh. The 360 is aging? That's rich. Meanwhile, most of that revenue for Sony came from the PS2, a SEVEN year old console! HAHAHAHA. If it weren't the PS2 carrying Sony's gaming division, it would've been sold off by now.
